So now we know within reason what to expect from the S5 MKII, what does this mean for the S1 upgrade do we reckon?

PDAF + DfD, 30+ MP sensor surely? and similar features with less focus on video?

And... I reckon even better IBIS?

I'd just like to see a big native telephoto for wildlife.

And would add a S1R II ? But could only be made to video-centric models ?

Thanks, never thought of that, would be a good idea !

I guess that the S5 was the S1ii and that the S5ii is the S1iii ....

I bought the wonderful G9 because it seemed the epitome at the time. First batch into Australia on pre-order.

A month later Panasonic announced the GX9 which was much more my type of camera (not that the G9 was not-excellent).

So would I add to or update my S1 when I would prefer an SX1 RF style body which technically would be more 'packable' than the S5 (type). Not going to rush - I can wait and be surprised by the RF style body. No point in dumping what is likely to be AUD$3,000 on one camera body only to find that the one you want arrives before the ink on the credit card has worn off.

By the way the S1 is a pretty good camera and at least retains the tilt capability of the LCD.

Does that mean - 'long fast telephoto' - or 'huge physical size' lens that needs its own wheeled trolley to move?

How does a handholdable 800 sound?

L mount needs at least a couple supertelephotos to be considered a complete system. Right now, the Sigma 150-600 is all we've got.

I have a the Canon EF 400/2.8 IS MkI all 5.5kg of it (for many years). Subsequent versions MkII and MkIII became lighter - but a fast long lens for FF is still a heavy beast. There is a long way between f6.3 and f2.8 and my 400/2.8 was an image stabilised lens as well - even it is 'only' 400mm.

But by all means if it can be had then go for it.

I don't think it will happen. The S5II replaces the S5 and S1. The S5IIX replaces the S1H. They just need an S5R to replace the S1R.
The S1 has already been rumored to come this summer by the same people that leaked the S5 Mk II. So, good chance an S1 is coming.

I hope so. I prefer the larger size of the S1 cameras.

I highly doubt that they won’t have a S1H successor. I’m sure they want something offering 8k, 4k60 w/o crops, 120 and 240fps in much higher quality, time code, …

Why wouldn’t they release that?

I can see a merge of S1 and S1R into one though

I'll only have to wait until 2026 to pick an 'ex-demo' S1R ii for half price.

Mind you, it will probably take me that long to get the best out of my S1R.

I agree this is more likely but I would be disapointed. One of the reasons I went for the S1r is the bigger chunkier body balances much better with large FF lenses. The same as the chunky G9 is a dream with small fast M43 lenses.

Long fast native telephoto. I have an old canon fd I I use but it's bloody long and heavy, manual obviously. Now that pdaf is looking to be the standard way forward, it makes sense to me that they should produce a decent lens for wildlife.
I am sure that they will get around to it.

The accountant in me says that long fast 'exotic' telephotos tend to be expensive if the need for them is not high (as it mostly is). This makes them to be individually built in small number on a bench.

That L-Mount is a relatively small selling mount system with a pretty high number of lens types to choose from 'spoiled for choice' must be an operative word. This would mean that Panasonic to be the originator must design such a lens from scratch for very low volume sales.

Alternatively Sigma might have an existing one built initially for another mount system that could be remounted for 'L'. In any case it would still hardly be a big seller.

Panasonic and Leica could well put their heads together on this one.

Of course slower types would be smaller and cheaper. Like that Nikon f6.3 - obviously f6.3 is probably ok for 800mm reach. Hand held? Incredible.

But the big-bazzas would be the exotic ones and cost of initial design and the limited hand assembly situation would surely slow their sale even more further pushing up the selling price necessary.

I’d happily take something like the Canon 800mm f11 from Panasonic :)
Pity Canon did not make anything like that for EF otherwise you could have found one and adapted it to L-Mount.
