to get the D100 out of my head. My brother recently got a canon DSLR and that got me thinking about the Nikon line. The more I look at the D100 and its lenses, the harder it is to fight against the thought of moving to it. On one hand, the cost is so prohibitive, several grand for the body and a few lenses. On the other hand, the minimum shutter lag, fast AF, and excellent optic quality, etc are just so mesmerizing to ignore.

Who said money does not bring happiness? I am losing this war here, and Christmas is coming... :-(

Took this picture today at Justin's last soccer game of the season with the beloved 5700. Sure wish I had in my hand a D100 (wishful thinking of course. The many pros here in this forum have taught me people take pictures, not camera, but I still wish...) Still love my tandem 5700 and 5000 and would never think of parting them.

If you do get one (a d100) then you can write the body off as an expense. Its not going to hold its value anywhere near as well as the film bodies do/did. Wer'e still in the midst of steep price dropping in DSLR's though I think this will settle a little within a 2-3 years I guess (above current film camera prices?). Then again it will last you quite a while I would say - the quality / performance is there after all and nothing can change that. But if you need a positive argument, then remember that good glass holds its value well.

Just playing devil's advocate. Im getting close myself to selling my soul ... ;)

if you can't live without the following:

1. MONEY

2. No flash sync above 1/180s

3. Did I say MONEY?

4. No swivel LCD (I'd have never guessed how much I've come to use it!)

5. ISO 100

6. weight (or should I say WEIGHT)

7. Reviewing pics in the viewfinder

8. (I hate to say this but) "low light" workarounds

9. I told you the part about money, right?

There's probably a couple of other "deal breakers" that I've missed but I think I've hit on some of the biggies, for me at least.

I just sat here, looking at them both, and came up with off the top of my head. If you need more reasons not to but one let me know. I'm sure I can come up with a few more if I try...

like any other loyal troop, I fought hard and came up with a list of "NO's" such as:

1. I don't need it and I don't spend enough time with it.
2. A lot of people are very happy with the equipment that I have.

3. I have not fully (or anywhere that close) mastered, or even understood how to use my current equipment.
4. The new equipment is a lot of MONEY.
5. I have invested a small fortune in the 5700 and 5000 and their accessories.
6. The current equipment do meet my current needs.

This was an impressive line of defense, I thought. Oh man, the devil fought hard. Every time I take picture now, the devil sends in his best artileries: shutter lag, focus speed, optical quality etc... Reports from the battle front so far have been back and forth. There were good days and there were bad days. On good days, I did not think about it and focus on my work. On bad days, I found myself leaving the safe and secure NTF home and straying into the DSLR and DSLR lenses forums for hours (Although folks there seem to be nice, I've got to tell you, there is no place like home. There are no Jarrell, Uncle Frank, Budd, Muriel, Sandra, Phil, FJBrad, Jarrell, Jarrell, and the gangs) ... Lately, he threw in a new nasty reinforcement something like, Huan, you only live once!!! That was a bad and below the belt hit.

For years, I have learned an inside tip from my profession: People buy with emotion and justify their purchase with logic! He is growing inside me!

HELP!

if you can benefit from a high ISO, low noise ratio, or S/N ratio
:
camera, but as an example, I saw a VERY good ISO 1600 pic from the
new D2H, taken in good light, that's Extremely clean. Actually , it
was amazing!

the one that has been Neat Imaged and such on the DSLR forum? There's another post over there that's a comparison shot, I think it was between the D1X and the D2H. I didn't see enough difference to warranty the change at this point. It's faster but that's about all.

But that's just my opinion... I could be wrong.

D.R.Barnhart

PS To whom it may concern: Please don't flame me for making the preceeding comment to Steven, I realize it has nothing to do with this forum. If you do I'll start posting DSLR pics 'til you throw up...

Of course you do. And "Time" is just an ephemeral whisp without substance that flows by leaving no trace.

Ah yes, but think of the joy of the DSLR owners reveling in their equipment.
3. I have not fully (or anywhere that close) mastered, or even
understood how to use my current equipment.
What is mastery but mans disillusional thought that he is supreme. Cast your lack of knowledge aside and be unlearned about a GREAT camera.
4. The new equipment is a lot of MONEY.
Money is just a medium that causes great disfunction in the world. You can not leave this life with it. (Although it may help if you have a sympathic loan
officer.)
5. I have invested a small fortune in the 5700 and 5000 and their
accessories.
See # 4.
6. The current equipment do meet my current needs.
But think of how the DSLR can exceed those needs and make your photography come to reach the great expectations you have for itl

Let's get down to it. All you really need is food, shelter, and sex. Everything else is just "gravy"! As far as spending enough time with it... That's really kind of a relative thing isn't it? After all, you don't spend much of the day in the bathroom but it sure is nice to have around when you want/need it. [sorry for the "toilet" humor...]
2. A lot of people are very happy with the equipment that I have.
As am I. I just wanted it (the D100) for the things that the CoolPix's couldn't do. Don't get me wrong, I love my 5700 and plan to keep it. And there's no crime in the fact that it won't do what the D100 will. There should be a difference or there'd be no reason for them both to exist. And nothing to justify the extra cost.
3. I have not fully (or anywhere that close) mastered, or even
understood how to use my current equipment.
Well who's fault is that? RTFM, ask questions, and practice, practice, practice.
4. The new equipment is a lot of MONEY.
I thought I mentioned the part about money... (LOL)
5. I have invested a small fortune in the 5700 and 5000 and their

I hear that! I think I'll sell one of my motorcycles in the Spring to help defray the costs, at least that's what I tell myself right now...
6. The current equipment do meet my current needs.
I don't think you really want me to address this one because I'd probably make some stupid comment about "growing into it's capabilities".
This was an impressive line of defense...
Yes it is! And it worked for me for several months. I also kept chanting the mantra, "WWJD?" (What would Jarrell do?), but I turned out to be weak... (Sorry Jarrell!)

I agree 110% with you here. They seem nice in that forum, and many are. But it's kind of ironic that I recognize a lot of the nicest people over there, they're from here! Now I understand why people don't leave here even when they don't own a CoolPix anymore.

I don't think I did... sorry again, Huan!

I'll just quit while I'm behind and go lens shopping, Bye!

is that noise any better than what yours will do? I look at the D2H as primarily an advance in speed, not picture quality, yet...

The reason there are different DSLR's pertains to their intended use. I personally think the D1X, D1H, and the D2H do a marginally better job than each other or my D100 when it comes to noise, they're just faster shooters (shutter lag, focus, fps). It's logical they do some things better, they cost at least twice as much.

Plus I don't know if I'll ever buy into a 2, 3, or 4 megapixel camera having the same (or better) resolution as a 6 megapixel camera. To me it's just not logical. The more pixels per inch, the better the resolution.

Oops! Getting way to far outside the parameters of this forum...

Huan, I just went through your agonizing description and moved up from the CP 5700 to D100. New pics below.

Here's what I can say, and I have also commented next to D.R. Barnharts response.

Are you familiar with the Nike slogan "Just Do It"...You will feel better, but to be honest, once you do it, you'll have a few days of "what did I just get myself into". Don't worry, you'll get over it quickly. Factor in getting a good lens. It makes a big difference, but you can still get good shots, regardless.

Bottom line, having the same experience, just do it, you'll be glad you did. It's really nice and I've been amazed at the new options I have now. I still would recommend keeping your 5700. It will come in handy.
yes, it's not cheap, but well worth the new opportunities and fun your'll have with it.
2. No flash sync above 1/180s
Yes I agree, this is my biggest complaint. I can't shoot my hummingbirds like I could with my 5700, but again, the opportunities this camera affords you is well worth this flash issue. This is only an issue in certain situations and hummingbirds, for me at least, is not all that I shoot.
4. No swivel LCD (I'd have never guessed how much I've come to use
it!)
Minor issue to be honest. You adjust pretty quick, Remember this is an SLR, feels and acts like one.
5. ISO 100
ISO 200 [min on the D100] is about equal to ISO 100 on the CP 5700.

No issue at all here. In fact, anything above IS) 200 on the CP is worthless, IMO do to the noise. The D100 far shines in this area.
6. weight (or should I say WEIGHT)
Bigger, but much better is my answer to this one.
7. Reviewing pics in the viewfinder
You can view pics, zoom, etc in the viewfinder?...No issue here!
8. (I hate to say this but) "low light" workarounds
Not had any issues here, excpet for HB shots.
