A99 (mk1) - IR remote shutter release

I don't know where you are based, but there are currently a number of used Sony RMT 830 units for sale on a well known internet auction site. Whether it's the best is another matter.

For a quick group shot with you in it from a tripod I always preferred the RMTDSLR:

For a studio session where I want remote release and don't want to worry about the IR lining up I MUCH preferred the after market RF remotes / intervalometers.

For fool proof just get a Sony oem RM-L1AM:
It works every time and is quick to plug in and use with less hassle than the RF remotes.

The little flat IR remotes never worked for me, Sony OEM or after market. I would pass on all of those.

Can anybody tell me what the best IR remote shutter release is for the A99.

Thanks

Steven
If it is for bulb mode, I'm not sure you kind bulb wireless... I don't remember having success with that.

I lost my receiver in an airport control years ago so since then I have only my wired remote.

The one that I got 10 years ago for my a65 still works just fine on my a7Riii. I suspect it would be classified as a: "cheap, little flat one". It has no branding on it identifying who made it or where it was made (China I'm sure).

I only use it to trigger the shutter once I've done all the rest.

Can you do bulb with that ?

In 10 years I have never needed bulb, so I don't know.

I suspect no. I suspect that it fires an IR pulse when the button is pressed or after the delay. I doubt there is any way for an IR remote to do bulb. Of course my understanding of how it works could be incorrect.

No , you need a cable release for that .

The reason why it will not work is that like your TV remote , you press the button and a signal is given .

Holding a button down doesn't give a continuous signal , as needed for bulb .

Your camera only has two shutter settings , bulb and when set to shutter priority 30 seconds to 1/8000th second ( or whatever the maximum shutter speed is ) .

The camera would need a "T" ( time ) setting to do what you want , like on a large format cameras lens .

"T" is when you press the shutter release to open the shutter , let go , then press it again to close the shutter .

As far as I know , no digital camera has this function .

A simple wired remote release will work for you , press the button to fire the shutter , slide a lever forward to lock it pressed in for "bulb" shooting .

Sony or Minolta ones are available cheaply , or Chinese imports .

Typically 50cm to 1m long cable , but Minolta did a 5m long one if that's what you need .

Looks like this ;

Can the a99 be controlled via the Sony app on a Smartphone ?

I'm not sure what settings that has regarding shutter speeds/bulb .

You have very little control with it on A mount cameras with it compared to E mount gear . Essentially just a wireless shutter release , but maybe it'll control in Bulb mode .

It's free to download onto your phone , so it'll cost nothing to try .

Indeed I have such a wired remote as I shoot often above the 30sec limit.

I also have the latest Sony remote made for A-mount which is very convinient for recording videos: it controls record/stop fuctions and analog zooming function.

No, because the A99 has no Wi-Fi capability,

No, because the A99 has no Wi-Fi capability,
Cable release it'd have to be then .

Must be just the last three A mount cameras they did it works on then .

The apps not much use on A mount anyway , might as well just use the self timer if you forget your remote control .

For Bulb, yes. Cable remote, IR remote, and app all have different capabilities and limitations.

Sony's website says only A77II and A99II.

My only compatible cameras are RX100III and HX90V. The app just does the basics like real time display, release shutter, and transfer JPEGs ... similar to what it would do with A-mount.

I have the Minolta cable release , a Sony IR release and a cheap Chinese IR release .

Biggest problem I had with the IR releases is a flat battery when I need it . Always forgot to replace the paper slip between the battery and contact .

I never have problems with my cable releases , so have ones that fit all my cameras be it mechanical or electronic .

I'm surprised the a68 is not included .

I've tried it on my a77ii once or twice as I'd forgot my cable release , not used it with my a99ii , but expect it to be just the same .

The only thing I've found particularly useful with the app was with my a7Riv when I've wanted to take some shots and upload them to the internet via my phone when I've been away on holiday . They can be transferred wirelessly .
