Can someone recommend fast SD cards that will work with my a7rII and with the a7RV?

I’ll eventually purchase an a7rv and some CFexpress Type A cards but for now, I just need some fast cards that will work with both cameras so I don't end up wasting money on cards that won't work with the RV.

It depends on how you define "fast", but for a very long time the price/performance curve has had a pretty hard bend at the Lexar 1667x series. This is a $60 card and the 128GB 2000x is $100.

I took 6 of those and my R3 across the Grand Canyon and filled them all.

82MB Raws, so about 3 FPS on the UHS-II slot and 1 FPS on the UHS-I slot which for landscape was more than enough (and at that point any old card would have done). On the RV, that goes up to 4 FPS on both slots with the new compressed RAW.

Get UHS II SD Card such as Sony Tough card or Sandisk Extreme Pro
 
Sony A7RII supports SD UHS-I cards, I don't know if UHS-II will work and at what speed. Buy the fastest UHS-I, e.g. Sandisk SDXC EXTREME PRO 170 MB/s works for me in A7RII and AIV, the one with 200 MB/s should also be ok. These are good cards and in practice they will not limit newer cameras in taking photos.
 
I normally use transcend V90 they are cost effective but stop at 64GB

For 128GB I use kingston again they are very cost effective

Invest in V90 cards in case you shoot a burst as otherwise it takes forever to clear the buffer

To be frank it wil take forever also with a fast SD card...

UHS-II cards are backwards compatible with UHS-I, so work fine. I have cameras with both type of interfaces and use UHS-II cards in all of them.

Ok, but will the A7rII take advantage of UHS-II speeds?

IMO, you need to check the specific UHS-II model in the camera, because the work can be unpredictable. At best you won’t receive the benefits that a UHS-II card will offer.

I use the Kingston Canvas React Plus V90 cards in my A1 and have been happy with them. They have good performance for the price. From the same site, here is an update specifically for the A7RV:

Interesting and a little surprising that the results differ significantly for the A7RV.

UHS-II cards work fine in the A7Rii, but they are just as painfully slow as a UHS-I card - A7Rii tops out at about 35MB/s, so not great.

No, not in camera, but if you remove the card and use a UHS-II card reader, it will allow much faster transfer of photos and videos to your computer. In addition, if you upgrade to a newer camera body, it will likely have UHS-II, so you can get the full benefit of such cards in the newer body.

Absolutely. The other site mentioned in this thread has card speed tests in numerous newer Sony bodies.

Personally I would buy the SanDisk Extreme 170MB/s UHS I cards, and then buy more CF Express cards for your A7R5 when you get it. CF Express prices should drop over time.

The difference in performance between the SanDisk Extreme UHS I and UHS II in the A7R2 is negligible, based on my experience. The cost difference is significant though. Save your money 🙂

If you absolutely must buy fast SD cards now, the Sony Tough G series is the best choice. Followed by the UHS II SanDisk 300MB/s cards.

My choice is the Sony Tough G cards - they used to stop at 128GB, but they recently announced 256GB. Not that I can find a store that has any yet!

I use the 128GB ones in the A7RIII, A7RIV, A1, and now A7RV. They should work in the A7RII, but maybe at top speed (cannot remember if it has UHS2.

That 170MB/s is only the read speed, not the write speed. Write speed is what we should worry about.

That 170MB/s is only the read speed, not the write speed. Write speed is what we should worry about.

True, but I'm simply using the read speed as an easy way to differentiate between the different SanDisk card models. The 300MB/s cards are much more expensive, but utterly wasted on the A7R2's slow card interface
