Uploading and Deleting Photos By Date?

On my Sony camera, when I connect it to my laptop, it'll show separate photo folders, each folder dated for the day a batch of photos were shot. So I can choose which folders I want to upload to my laptop and then to Lightroom. Also, if I want to delete a photo directly from the camera, I can either delete just that photo or I can press a menu button where it'll ask me if I want to delete all photos for that date.

I'm wondering if I can do similar with the GRIII? The GRIII when connected to the laptop is showing as one folder with consecutive photos, so I need to highlight all the photos I want from a particular date and then copy and paste. And when deleting from the camera, I don't see a way to delete a batch of photos from one particular date. Maybe there's an option in the menu I need to change?

Setup Menu 1, Folder Name - select Date.

Not sure about deleting in camera.

Thanks Doug, I've changed folder Name to Date. I'll see how it goes. Maybe that'll also allow me to delete by date in camera.

When I insert the SD-card (of any camera) I can select a specific day (date but also today, yesterday) in the folder.

You can do that too, by selecting "list view", and add a column "date created" )or dete modified, if that suits you better) and then click on the arrow on the right-hand-side of the column header.

Not sure if it works with the camera connected to the PC, but if the PC sees it as an external drive, probably the view will be the same.

Hi Sjak. Since changing the folder name in the camera set up menu to 'Select Date' I'm now seeing separately dated folders when connected to my laptop which is great, so I'm able to select just the day I want. However, I'm still not seeing an option in the camera to delete specific dates.

No worries, happy you found a solution that works for you.

For me, the folder-per-day-method is not optimal, as I often shoot in evening/night at pub, clubs & concerts, and then images from 1 shoot get spread over more folders.

Re. deleting; I simply format my SD-card from time to time. I have no use for older pics on my camera. However, I am curious why you like to keep some on your GR?

Good question. I suppose don't really need to keep any. But sometimes I like to keep certain photos for a while longer on the camera that I've already uploaded to my laptop.

Because I often delete photos from the laptop and later wonder if I should have kept them. By keeping them on the camera for a bit longer I safeguard myself. And so by being able to delete by date (in camera) I could delete a batch of photos I definitely know I don't need on the camera anymore while keeping the dates I might still need. Or I might want to keep some photos on the camera to look at them and remind myself what aperture/ISO/shutter speed settings I used for them while I'm out and about, in case I want to try and replicate the photos.

Makes sense!

Given that storage is cheap nowadays, I don't delete anything from my PC, except obvious unintentional shots. Including (slower) internal backup drives, I have over 10TB of internal storage on my PC.

I'm not sure if the GR-series has the option to protect files from deleting (I know some of my cameras have this option), but this could be an option to avoid deleting the "settings reminders" when using "delete all".
