And then the other thought: that the Z8 is to be higher res than the Z9 and so replace the Z7 while the Z9 is really the Z6 replacement. And, so, then no Mark III versions of the Z6 and Z7.
Just to forward one of the SWAG sections of a previous Z8 rumor/speculation threads....
And then there was another one where the Z8 has resolution between the Z6 and the Z9.
Oh, and we shouldn't forget the one where the Z8 is the same as the Z9 minus the built in vertical grip.

You're a bit early to reach that point. The drama hasn't even unfolded yet.
It is the vacuum camera, arising from spontaneous quantum fluctuations of the Z field.

For the sake of Nikon, it better not be a rumor. Because it is widely expected that Sony and Canon will shortly be releasing some really High End Gear that will be highly desirable. That can put a cork in what was Hot, for others. So the Margin for Error, is thinning, Each year.
It can't just be about the Lens an or the Z9.
So if the Z8 is just a repurposed Sony a7riv sensor, I don't believe that would be enough. I say a Baby Z9 aka Z8 with the Z9 sensor, however would be.

If they keep predicting it, they'll be right at some point.
That’s just silly. It would be really expensive and very big.
I’d be perfectly happy with a 28-800 f/1.4 though.

The Z1 should be the penultimate Z camera. That's the one I'm waiting for.

gSo you should be. Even Canon users seem to gave finally given up on the R1. Anyway, Nikon’s got so many other numbers to choose from apart from 8: Z10, 20, 4, 3, 2. ..1

Z is the designation for a Zener Diode. And we begin at number 1.
Come to think on it, most have quite a few Zeners in there. So many, many Z8s out there!
