Hi team,

I am considering the purchase of a clean little used M-1 II; however, I really would like to wait for a M-1 III because many of the additional features are useful to me.

Does the cost for M-1 IIIs seem like they will hold steady for a while or are there enough OM1s being bought that the prices for M--1 IIIs will drop?

Thoughts, prophecies, guesses?

It's not exact but with each model they seem to be going to roughly the same prices. So when the OM-1 II comes out I'd expect the E-M1 III to get down to the current II prices. Or if there's a really extended wait they might drop as well but that would be years.

If you have the money for the mkII now and you'd need to wait a long time to save to get the mkIII I'd just get the II. Get months or years of use out of it and then trade it in. You'd lose a little money overall but at the same time you'd get all that time with the II.

Thank you. I tend to keep cameras for a long time, so that won't be an issue.

I read some comments about the OM1 not being enough of an upgrade over the M-1 III, which might make it take longer for used camera pricess to drop.

I'd pick the one with the features you need, trying to get past the things you want can be tough though.

Buying the II and waiting till the III hits the same price (and buying one too), would be similar to buying a III now, but you'd spread the payment and have a great back-up, that takes the same batteries and accessories, right?

Hard to say with the OM1, mostly positive was my impression, people with a need for more IQ were probably the most let down imo, IQ not changing (much) from current 20mp mft sensors.

It looks to have won over good review for its birding abilities, so I'd imagine used prices will stay high, keeping the III high, as long as III stocks dont swell too much.

Depends how the stores price, and react to stock levels.

I dont think you can go wrong between them tbh.

For some but for many the opposite is true. You can read opinions on just about anything that contradict other opinions or that bolster your preconceptions.
III, which might make it take longer for used camera pricess to drop.
In the USA, the used prices for the E-M1 III have been dropping, as many, I suppose, have moved up from that model to the OM-1. MPB.com has quite an inventory of them.

The extra features in an E-M1 III will probably give you another year of use which I think would cover the extra up front cost.

Because the E-M1iii has several useful added features and improvements I suggest going to that model directly. Price variation is not possible to guess, but setting a target price then waiting for it to be available, I find less stressful than chasing the best deal available at some given time.

In the States, the Get Olympus refurb sales are a good resource.

Good luck!

keh.com recently dropped the price on EM1.3 by over $300 USD. That prompted me to buy one instead of save the money for the OM-1. At less than $800 USD right now, it's a fantastic value.

I own both Em1 markii and the markiii. If you photo a lot of people, the eye autofocus is way better on the iii. I upgraded to the the iii just cause of that. Plus Hand held high res, live nd, and starry sky features really do add value to the camera. Same processor as the OM-5 so technically if the OM-5 sees any updates so could the Em1 markiii . I for one thought/hoped they would of at least added animal eye autofocus, but nope. I would spend the extra money. You will use the extra features more than you think..

I hadn't been keeping up on KEH since they're usually more expensive. But under 800 with 10% off on top of that it's a pretty good buy.
Yes, KEH has an EX+ M-1 IIIs for $789 and an Ex for $752

Thank you everyone. You certainly gave me a lot to think about!

KEH under $800 for the III is super good. When I was buying I's I was getting them for $500 on FM. Eventually the III will get there too but who knows when. If I felt I needed a III "now" I wouldn't worry too much about the $300. Never had a II but the III I've had a few and they are great!

Good luck with your decision.

The OM-1 is already seeing good discounts.

I doubt the 3 will ever hit $500 unless it's a copy that's banged up. There's a floor for every product.

I'm talking used prices on FM...it'll get to $500 eventually and even lower. The floor for most these cameras (almost all) is under $100 unless your talking Hassy or Leica. Heck the X-Pan is fetching crazy amounts still and will continue to do and it's a film camera. :)

Thankfully Olympus isn't in that league.

Excellent condition E-M1 mkI's are 304 with a 6 month warranty on MPB now. So in 2 generations I'd expect the mkIII to be about that price.
