DxO BF Deals...

I’m planning to upgrade from PL5 Elite to PL6 Elite (£65 with the BF deal) and I’m also considering ViewPoint as a first time purchase although the BF discount isn’t wonderful. I seem to recall reading that PL6 Elite incorporates improved geometric correction compared with Version 5? Can anyone who has been using PL6 advise how the inbuilt correction compares with ViewPoint 4? Thanks.
I have used PL6 elite perspective correction tools which do everything I need. However, it does not have the "volume correction" tools that are in ViewPoint.
The main reason I upgraded to PL6 was to get these perspective correction tools.

Thanks. I think it is Volume Correction (Deformation) that I would like. The tool that sorts out the distortion at the outer edges with wide angle shots making people look 'chunky'. It sounds as though DxO ViewPoint may be needed for this. I use Capture One 22 which has a good Perspective Correction tool but nothing for Volume Correction.

Yes. I automatically apply it to every single shot I process in PhotoLab (it's part of my auto preset). Obviously, it only starts to have a noticeable effect on lenses wider than about 28mm equiv.

I don't know of any other tools that do automatic volume deformation correction.

It's only available for supported lenses in DxO.

£65 for an upgrade from v5 to v6 seems steep to me. It's very marginal as to whether it's worth upgrading at that price IMO. I came down on the side of buy, but it was a close call!
Not worth it for me. DeepPrime XD is better that just DeepPrime, but only just. As I don't' shoot huge amounts at high ISO I'd rather have another year of Adobe's Photography Plan. Lightroom is ahead of Photo lab in almost every respect. PL5 will still serve as useful tool for dealing with Drone files and the occasional high ISO shots.

At least not with DeepPRIME XD. It creates a lot of artifacts and doesn't look as natural as regular DeepPRIME.

Anything else that might be worth the $69 upgrade price?

I was hoping for 50% on PL6. The CDN $ exchange rate really sucks right now and the price is still $220CDN not including taxes. It would be nice to have but really hesitant about its added value for cost over ACDSee Ultimate + OM Workspace + Topaz, which I already have. Sigh.. I think I'll pass on the deal once more to my chagrin and save the money toward a new lens rather.

It's still unclear to me whether the volume correction tools in ViewPoint are included in PhotoLab 6. Could someone please provide clarification? Is there any reason to have both programs as opposed to PL alone?

Another reason I'm hesitating to upgrade is that I'm not sure my computer meets the system requirements of the new software.

I hesitated also, but upgraded ($69 for current Elite 4 owners). My Win 10 PC is pretty basic with 8GB RAM on an SSD hard disk, but it's only slow when processing Deep Prime or Deep Prime XD files at the export stage.

The volume deformation correction is a ViewPoint feature. You only get it if you have a VP licence. But, if you do, the feature is available within PL. In other words, it’s built into PL, but only turned on if you have a VP licence.

Just what I needed to know. Thanks.

Yes, paid $69 for PL5 Elite to PL6, didn't upgrade viewpoint as I hardly use it. Let's see what the upgarded deeprime is like now!
I'm thinking of doing the same. Really interested on hearing if you think it was worth the upgrade?
I upgraded to PL6 Elite to get the perspective tools and they do exactly what I needed.
(these perspective tools are usually standard in most editors and should have been in PL5)

That was the sleeper feature for me. I’ve been trialling it for 2 weeks.. Deep Prime XD is worth it too. Upgraded today.

I just upgraded today (from PL5) and I’m so far impressed with XD. I’ve only tested it on high iso shots so far as that is apparently where it brings most benefit. To my eyes it appears to both render more detail and less smearing in the areas where there’s detail, and also eliminate more noise in smoother contours of photos. I haven’t noticed artifacts yet.

A wider gamut working color space maybe?

No discounts on upgrades alas...or at least not on PureRaw.
I just payed $69 for a upgrade to PL6 Elite as a BF deal. If I remember correctly, the normal upgrade prise is $99 ?

This image shows the effect of Volume Deformation correction, applied within PL:

OOC JPEG extracted from raw file:

Processed in PL6 without volume deformation correction. Note that the image is slightly wider than the OOC JPEG, but has similar stretching at the edges. This is not a camera or lens fault, but is inevitable with wide angle lenses.

Processed in PL6 with Volume deformation correction. This is a ViewPoint feature, but fully integrated within PhotoLab, and can be applied directly, as in this case.

Thanks Nigel. I quite often take group photos so VP will prevent comments from those at the edges that I've made them look fat :-)
