Tamron 17-70 2.8, initial impressions on X-H2!

ken,

I tried the 2 Tamron zooms in video

1/ 18-300mm : Perfect OIS in the range 18-100mm, after there is this strange vibration of the frame in the X and Y directions

2/- 17-70mm : perfect OIS in the whole range

tested on my XH2s

Wondering why in the range 100-300mm it does not work ...

Bob
Thanks, Bob, that’s very helpful. I’m assuming that test was with the latest lens firmware? Your results with the 18-300 were similar to mine pre-update, perhaps a bit better. Unfortunately with the 18-300 you need the stabilization most at the longer focal lengths.

It’s good news though that the 17-70 is perfect throughout the range.

Thx. All FW upgraded

Mysterious behavior of the 18-300mm strange X and Y short but frequent movements....

Agree 300mm OIS is essential !

Best

In an in depth review here by a very serious and skilled reviewer

he found OIS perfect on the 18-300mm... and he shows in video

Done on 03/10/21 using a XT4

SO :

it seems to be not a Tamron issue but ... a Fuji issue with the new bodies !!! Not good news, hope Fuji is aware

Best

News : got the french script, an extract :

"Video mode In video, everything works fine. The autofocus is still just as reactive, even when switching from close-focus to headlight-focus. No pumping, constantly recalculated focus… A success! It's just a bit slower at 300mm as you go from one distance to another. The case struggles a little more at f6.7, we feel that it is done step by step. As all my videos were handheld, I took the opportunity to test the stabilization. And again, nothing to say! Everything works fine. In short, I am very happy with the autofocus, both in photos and in video. Same thing for stabilization! The overall compatibility of the lens with the Fuji system is impressive, it looks like Tamron has been doing this forever."

Hope this helps

I recently got the Tamron 17-70 to use with the xh2/s combo. I had issues with the lens @2.8 and rather than returning the lens, I sent it to Tamron for a fix, looking at the reviews, I expect a lot from this lens; I am hoping I made the right decision. just called them up and they are running behind in repairs.

To bring this up, what happened? Was your lens repaired? I test two copies of this lens intensively since months against my 16-80 on X-T3/X-T4 and funnily my 16-80 was much better than the Tamron. OIS much better, AF much better, Tamron is totally unable to focus consistent. IQ better at all overlapping focal lenghts. Either i have the worlds best copy of the 16-80 or there is something wrong with the Tamron for Fuji mount.

Unfortunately my impressions on the X-H2 are the same as the X-H2s, and I am unlikely to be keeping this copy either.

I wanted it for indoor/low light use and in all honesty its not that useful imo despite being 2.8. The af motor seems noisy/lumpy compared to Fuji almost like its struggling. Af accuracy seems hit and miss with the pin-point and one larger af box, but it just doesn't provide any confidence.

Swapping back to the 18-120.4 is night and day better, the focus and accuracy in the same low light conditions is superior in every way, quiet/fast, accurate and to my eye sharper too.

I need to decide if I'm going to do any further testing with it as its intended purpose was lower light. Now I'm thinking I might as well get a prime in the 20/30 range.

Very disappointed in this lens for a second time now, the rxd motor might be at the heart of the problem, the best motors on Tamron are vxd.
Thanks for posting this. I was considering buying the Tamron 17-70 lens as I keep looking for a superior replacement to my XC 16-50, but your post as well as some reviews have discouraged me. I have had bad experiences with the XF 18-55s and have given up on that lens, besides I really like the 16 mm focal length option, which also gives me pause to acquire the Sigma 18-50 f2.8.
