I am a long time Canon user and am considering my next purchase. Many reviews I read or watch rate Canon glass over Sony, but the DXO rankings seem to clearly disagree.

See: https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/

Lens quality is core to my next move. Is DXO reliable?

Thanks

I place no faith in DXO.

There are going to be excellent lenses and poor lenses from any manufacturer. Generally the best glass is the most expensive.

The problem with Sony is that they rely on third party manufacturers to fill out their lens system. Third party manufacturers only release lenses for the masses, so Sony will never be able to match the Canon and Nikon lens systems.

In some instances third party manufacturers are producing excellent lenses, but I will always trust original manufacturers more.

Overall, current Sony lenses equal, or surpass, their Canon rivals. In fact, a few Sony designs are an industry standard for IQ. In the past, however, some Sony lenses have suffered from significant copy-to-copy IQ variation and an early version of the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM developed a bit of a spotty reputation for a questionable mechanical design choice. See, "Lens Teardown of the Complicated Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS: Part I, and "Completing the Teardown of the Sony FE 70-200 f/2.8 GM OSS: Part II", Lensrentals, February 25 and 27, 2017.

Thanks, but I am looking at similar Canon and Sony lenses. For example the 70-200 f/2.8 from each or the 24-70 f/2.8 from each. Head to head Sony is always on top according to DXO.
