That's true, I'm typically showing my work to a small group of people or a couple of friends. However you can email/text them your Flickr account just the same as in Instagram handle. I do have and use both, BTW, I just prefer Flickr if I can have the choice. Insta's becoming increasingly annoying in addition to the deeper issues I have with Meta products and the company behind them, in general.

I don't know very many folks who don't gripe about FB, Insta, etc; so in whatever small way I can, I'm trying to do something about it by using other means when possible.
Makes sense.

An analogy: For a longer time, I tried to avoid WhatsApp as a messenger. In Germany, Threema and Signal are actually good alternatives. But I was not successful in convincing friends. One day, I gave up. I am not a hermit. I want to be part of the society.

Insta vs 'alternatives' is probably a similar case.

One of my small ways: I have my contacts not on Google servers. They are only local on the cell phone and I backup manually.

Regards,

Martin
Agreed. I try to minimize Google's incursions into my digital life.. but here in the USA at least, you pretty much can't function without it. From Gmail to Google Docs, to your Android phone literally not letting you delete a blurry picture without giving Google access to your entire device.. there just aren't any laws which protect consumers or AKA 'the product' because that's what you are when the service is free.

Except I pay for my phone and the carrier, so it's not even free.

I'm leaving Instagram. I have found Vero

Would you mind sharing your experience? Pros, cons?

I'd give it a try but I cannot run it on my Linux machine because Vero requires an app (mobile device or desktop, not available for Linux). I'd need to transfer all photos to the cell phone before upload, a procedure that I find pretty annoying.

If Vero is free and requires an app, then I would suspect that it's spying on your data in one form or another. 'Free' in every case, means you are the product. If you're OK with that then it doesn't matter. If not, then it might.

Update: I went to Vero's site and read their TOS.. and after I recovered from the nap that such long texts of legalese tend to inspire ..it seems like they're actually pretty benign. Their TOS insists that you retail full ownership of your content, and they don't sell your information or content to third parties but only retain the rights to copy it in terms of actually displaying and sharing it with other members of the service.

Yes I know. Maarten has started a thread where this was discussed. Thank you anyway.

Here's the thread :

I wonder if it might be prudent to restart the poll with all of the options and perhaps have multiple choices for those that don’t only use one platform?

For what it’s worth, I started posting on Twitter several days ago and am liking it so far. It has a similar reach as Instagram, but the photos are displayed at a higher resolution.

I decided to give glass.photo a go after being on flickr, then smugmug. Tried to go back to flickr but I find them to be too expensive for what it is now.

I did consider Vero at some point but didn't seem to work very well for me. I'm still not set on which sharing platform with user engagement I would be happy with.

TBH I'm just an amateur unwilling to pay too much for a hobby that will never bring money in.

I am liking Vero but haven't engaged much yet. Need to explore it more. Photos get more likes than Instagram so it feels like a busier community, at least for street shots.

I really like Flickr. It’s really easy to use. The format is great and the user feedback features seam to have created a nice community feel to the site.

Worryingly, I got a survey emailed me today from Flickr asking what I would think if certain features were removed.

These included such things as search, albums, favourites folder and profiles.

I hope they don’t let some clown in the bright ideas department ruin the site.

I thought they (SmugMug) didn't make enough changes when they took over. It was a failed platform and I couldn't see how they tried to improve it. I paid for a while but then the pricing jumped and they sounded desperate and I jumped ship.

Getting rid of those features sounds bad though. I wrote them a big list of things to improve but basically they need more compelling reasons to use it. A simple way to improve this is with themed competitions to get those group discussion boards changed from "2 posts 7 years ago" into active communities.

And monetize it with printing services - it would be so easy and profitable to hook up with a photobook company, who also do prints of various quality ranges.

And annual Flickr awards. They should be handing awards out to camera brands, photography vloggers and winners of photo competitions. Get some buzz about the platform and sponsored vloggers pushing it e.g. do those "sponsored by" ads SquareSpace do in vlogs.

Well I am not happy with my actual choices

Instagram new algorithm hates photos, and getting only 5 or 10 likes for a photo we are very proud of is kinda insulting

Flickr is the best platform when I want to share high res photos with a forum or friend but the 1000 limitation can be problematic after a while

Now I am searching for a free platform where I can upload my photos without compression

Flickr is still the top dog and you just make a new account after 1k photos. I am scared they will start deleting profiles when people have more than one, but doubt they would be able to check and be sure. They probably think it is better to let us get away with it rather than get in potential law suits for wrongly deleting profiles.

Definitely better than Instagram as Flickr allows full quality uploads and albums. Unfortunately you can't upload full quality from Lightroom mobile on Android devices, although you can on iOS. Which has stopped it being an extra backup option. When I was on iOS it was a great backup for keepers. Totally Adobe's fault. This could be a big reason why I pay Google Photos instead for an extra cloud backup.

I'm surprised that Slickpic has not had a mention here yet.

Long story short - I manage the photo galleries for our local U3A. Flickr was our tool for a while, but we found that when using albums it was not possible for various group members to upload direct.

A bit of searching a couple of years back took me to Slickpic and it does exactly what we want - ad free!

There are a whole range of controls for uploads and downloads - cost of the basic version is 50GBP pa which is about normal these days.

This is our gallery - I make no apologies for content. https://pewseyu3a.slickpic.com/gallery

Agreed on the other ideas, but Flickr already offers print services. Just click on the little shopping cart icon to the lower right of each photo, and it takes you to the screen where you can buy a variety of prints in all manner of sizes.

Ahhhh. That's good to hear, I want them to succeed. I must not be seeing it as I am currently in Turkey.

I use SmugMug to host my little website and Flickr as my back up, meaning I upload all photos I definitely don’t want to loose to Flickr. :)

I have been using PBase.com since 2007. It's unobtrusive, non-commercial looking, and utterly unpretentious. It also allows you to write your own HTML (in a limited way) to customise the look and feel of your online galleries. I'm happy to pay the low rates asked for this service and will continue to do so.

I also use 1x.com, and pay for that too. This allows me to compete with some of the best photographers in the world in order to be published. It keeps me on my toes and makes me push myself.

Good post.

Also increasingly disappointed from Insta. More and more advertisement.

Thinking about going away from Insta.

Don't know yet where to.

Yes Flickr is interesting.

Well because I had not heard or read about it.

Very happy that this thread is still alive. We've 100 replies now :)

Thank you for highlighting Slickpic. Nice galleries.

Slickpic is more like SmugMug am I right, pure sharing, no likes possible, no useer interaction?

Martin
