Anyone having alot of weird slightly out of focus shots with R7

That's what I have been seeing as well subject track off for stills equals sharper birds , I am shooting an adapted 100-400 MII and am also finding lens IS off seems to increase detail/ focus as well. I have not tried the opposite camera IS off lens is on. My testing has been with backyard birds. And I did see what the Op with the Hawk seen only with A juvenile eagle that was launching from a tree . The 5th shot of the series the head eye and beak sharp, Talons and legs blurred and shot at 1/1600 ss . I am not complaining and over the moon about this little gem. I have so many shots that are keepers that I don't even do post on because another just has a little better look to it. In fact if I had any complaints it would be I wish I could go 10 fps electronic instead of 15 (Shooting H) because I am taking to many dang shots.🤣

Today I tried using eye detect with the R7 with subject tracking off and mostly electric shutter. It seemed to perform better with many more keepers. I will try subject tracking off with electronic first curtain and mechanical shutter next. Narrowing it down.

Some lovely shots there and interesting findings. It’s easy to assign a button to toggle ED on/off though it’s not so easy for tracking. One has to set tracking to off in the main menu and then turn it on with an assigned button. Unlike ED it doesn’t remember state so if one turns on tracking it defaults back to off if one recomposes or the camera cycles down.

So, ED, no tracking has performed better than ED+tracking. Next try tracking with ED off and see how it compares.
Have you been able to test tracking with ED off?

I've tried with subject tracking off eye detect on, and subject tracking off eye detect off and have had good results both ways. I will prob just shoot those ways for now. Will experiment further if there are more firmware updates.

So far I can keep up all right. Its not ideal, but am getting a satisfactory amount of keepers, compared to subject tracking and eye detect both being on. If I find eye detect isn't working for bifs will switch to single point with expansion points, then can usually get the shot. If I was planning to shoot bifs only, would take r6 as that rarely seems to miss.

Are you keeping up with BIFs with tracking off?
