Enhancing old pictures or scans

Hi!

Very very nice!

Too complicated for me I guess.

Anna
I don't think so Anna.

Remember, none of us were born fully fledged photo retouchers. It's a skill you have to learn, just like any other.

Topaz Photo AI will give you a good starting point though.

After that it's just a game a whack a mole, find an area you're not happy with, fix it.

Rinse/repeat.

I suggest you start, and then if you get stuck, ask on the forum here. People are always happy to help :)

My only advice is don't delete your originals. Your processing skills and software will improve over time. I can do things now that were inconceivable 10 years ago, and advances in software are a big part of that.

Hi!

looks great! Thanks.
I feel the procedure to achieve this is too complicated for me a unexperienced user.

Perhaps Topaz will be enough?

Anna
Anna,

What I did was not complicated at all, it basically is the software that I used to obtain this result. It literally took me about 2 minutes to do this photo. Now, it did not work as well on the first photo for some reason, and I was not happy with the result, so I did not post that one. It simply created to many artifacts that I did not like which results for scanning the images at low resolutions. Sometimes when you sharpen scanned images, the affect of sharpening is simply not attractive.

If you have the ability to scan the images at higher resolutions, it may end up better after sharpening. But that is up to you of course if you want to re scan them, and depending on what resolution your scanner will scan at.

Hi!

i cannot do a rescan. Just found those accidentally on a harddisc of my dad.
showing me and family some years ago.
that’s why tried to enhance the pics.

thanks.

There are a couple of issues. The Topaz AI software is simple to use for things like sharpening and noise reduction, but you may need other software for adjusting things like highlights, contrast, etc.

I'm unfamiliar with the AI Photo all-in-one package. Maybe that adds some features that aren't present in the DeNoise/Sharpen/Gigapixel bundle, which I have.

This is something I did using just Sharpen AI, masking to just sharpen the woman, and using the noise reduction built-in to Sharpen.

If you view the full-sized image, you'll see that it's sharper, but there is a lot more that could be done with it.

How many images do you wish to enhance?

Hi!

there are a lot. Like vacation pics from high school to university.
i guess I will have to select the important ones.

There is an app called PicMa that uses AI to restore old photos. I used it to enhance cropped versions of three images. It's good at enhancing portraits rather than images where the face is just a relatively small part of the image. It can be used for free if you don't mind sitting through a lot of advertisements. The version I used runs on Android, but I believe other versions are available. The original images are on the left, the output of the App on the right.

I just received an email from Topaz announcing the release of Topaz Photo AI today. Apparently, it's a brand new product that's just come out of beta testing.

I logged into my Topaz account and was surprised to see they're giving away free licenses to owners of the bundle. Check out your account at the Topaz website.

I've been working on old photos and it's a pretty good product.

Thanks.

looking for a pc version!

Anna
You could check out the Remini online photo enhancer at https://remini.ai/

It's from the same company that produces the PicMa App. They let you try it out for free online, but you have to get a paid subscription to get the watermark removed from the downloaded enhanced images.

I guess the price depends on when you purchased the bundle.

Topaz wants about $72 from me. Substantial discount, but not free.

Oops. It appears that I get 2 free "seats". $72 is for two more. I found the Topaz site misleading.

Thanks to you all.

i will get this sw and try my best with most of the found pics :-).

Not bad for just a little playing with sliders.

It does bring ups some crud that is on the photos.

May be worth $160.

Gave one a try
