can anyone report on whether their Fourthirds (FT) lenses, for which Micro AF adjustment was needed on earlier OMD camera models, still require AF adjustment with the OM-1 ?

Note,
I'm looking for 1st hand experience responses from actual FT lens users who did need to dial in AF adjustments with say their FT 50-200, 150, 300mm lenses etc when used with their E-M1II, III or X.

Did you find that with the OM-1, AF adjustments for those lenses was no longer needed ?

thanks

Peter

Any mirrorless body will need no adjustment with legacy or other lenses for DSLR's, where the mirror/pentaprism optics may need micro-adjustment. Mirrorless, you're looking directly at the magnified sensor image.

I never even thought about adjustments with my Oly E-30 w/ 50-200 + 2X TC, but it was much sharper on my GH1 which had extraordinary sharpness for its 12MP, rivaling 18MP crop Canon DSLR's of the day...

Did a formal test (tripod, calibration target, all three focus modes) of the 150/2.0 and no adjustment is needed.

Informal test of the 35-100/2.0 shows it accurate, but I won't claim verification w/o tripod and target test.

I did a test with the 300 F2.8 and did not require adjustment. It does require adjustment on EM1X which tended to back focus a touch. Even tested with a 1.4 teleconverter and the OM1 did not require adjustment. I dialed in some adjustment just to see what it would do and it reliably front or back focused based on what I chose. I turned adjustments off - not needed.

thats not how PDAF works and so that’s not the case with the Olympus mirrorless OMD cameras up to the E-M1III that utilise PDAF to focus the FT lenses.

To achieve accurate focus my FT lenses, when used on my E-M1 II and III, require specific adjustments on their own, with the 1.4x and with the 2x teleconverters.

eg my ZD300mm f/2.8 consistently back focuses unless a PDAF adjustment is made and this is precisely why OLYMPUS provided the adjustment feature, or do you think they just did it for fun ?

My question is whether this is still the case with the OM-1

Adjustment might be needed whenever Phase detection AF is used.

Thanks Rick.

Did you test the 150/2 with 1.4x and 2x teles

I see the same with the 300/2.8 on EM1II and III . . . and greater correction needed with 1.4x and still more with the 2x

I’m wondering why the OM-1 still has the adjustment feature. Perhaps this threat might find the answer to that question

Thanks

Hi Peter,

Just the bare lenses and not with the ECs, sorry!

On both single and continuous AF?

I only tested continuous as that is what I use with that lens. Took 20 photos each from 10m and again from 50m. I did not test the 2.0 teleconverter as I couldn't find it at the time. Probably in a side pocket of a bag somewhere I forgot about!

I wish I had kept my 150mm f2.0... the CAF adjustment and misfocusing on the EM1 was frustrating... it seems it will be fine on the OM1.

I saw enough reports of FT lens AF issues with the E-M1 to convince me to not buy that camera.

When I saw enough reports that the E-M1 Mark II was doing AF as well as or better than the E-5 I made the move to mirrorless.

But I was surprised to find that my 300mm/2.8 still needed custom AF Adjustments for 300, 420 and 600mm despite there being no mirror and separate AF sensor.
