Guess the place #234

Coincidentally we visited this town on the same day as the Queen (center of the image, green dress, the lady to the right).
Looking back after almost fifty years we had come to see the birthplace (and burial place) of a genius and saw perhaps the greatest monarch of our time addressing her subjects in an unexpected relaxed atmosphere. A day that burned itself into my mind.

Nice post Hans. As a young lad I was within just a few feet of the new Queen during her visit down here in 1953. “We have seen better days.”

No, not Grantham.

The town has more than two million visitors a year.

Imagine a theatre building in the background and a major theatre company based in this town.

The Queen came here on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of the theatre.

My careful attempt to avoid naming the place but to leave a clue for someone else failed! 😄

Sorry, I’m not in a position to post a new picture today, so I will take a pass and offer a free turn

Cheers

One might say out on a limb.

Out on a large farmland limb that was once native bush before the settlers arrived - and in the late 1800s a major centre for the kauri gum industry.

A geologically recently formed limb that, over time, turned an extensive bay into a very large harbour on this South Pacific island.

The nearby large harbour to our east, with many years of sedimentation, is now rather shallow with a very substantial tidal variation and difficult entry - not as popular for shipping as the main local harbour just a few km to its north.

Where do you think this was taken?

Incidentally, I got Hans's quiz on the Villa Adriani by the low tech way of looking at dozens of photos of crocodile statues until I saw one that looked almost right.
