HELP. Capture One 22 (Sony) not working!

Is this a trial version or have you purchased it ?
No I didn't purchase it and it didn't say trial. It's freely as far as I know from here.
What does the 'About' screen show?

Note that page also leads to the 30 day free trial download.
There is only one version that can be downloaded.
How about this:

Perhaps Michael clicked on the first, rather than the second, download button?
Perhaps Michael clicked on the first, rather than the second, download button?
The paid licence for Pro or the free Express licence variously enables it but with restricted access if it is the Express licence.
Ah, that may be!! I'll see if I can find that page and try it!

After using the link and registering you will be emailed a license number. I would suggest to re download and install Capture One, a link is provided in the email, and the enter the license number.

Hopefully you will then be up and running with Capture One Express for Sony.

As I found on the Capture One site, there is only one version of the program that is downloaded. The type of licence you get unlocks which version you have, so in our case our free licence has unlocked it as the Express for Sony version. https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002465337-Capture-One-product-variants

My suggestion is to deactivate your copy, then open it and activate it again, which requires a login to your account, then re-entering your licence number. That may "reset" it in some way I hope.

The ambiguous wording at Capture One to me means that maybe after Capture One 22 has moved to 23 then we may lose the free licence. Only a guess, but they only seem to promise to keep updating the 22 version. This should not have caused your current problem though.

Yes, several people have reached the conclusion that the new owners aren't interested in continuing with these cut-price single-make and free crippled-functionality single-make licences. I assume the previous owners had hoped that a significant number of users would upgrade to full licences, and maybe the new management have analysed the figures and found that very few did? So they may think it better to sell a much smaller number of full-priced Pro licences to people who really value the product, rather than giving it away to lots of people who only wanted it because it was free, and would never upgrade to a paid-for version.

https://www.dpreview.com/news/43614...-versions-for-fujifilm-nikon-and-sony-cameras

https://www.imaging-resource.com/ne...is-no-longer-offering-brand-specific-versions

So my guess is that the current free Express versions will remain for a while, but in a frozen state, with no enhancements or bug fixes. Once they lag well behind the living Pro product, they'll quietly disappear, but existing copies will keep working. Maybe users will be offered a discounted upgrade to the the full Pro version (or some future lower priced product)?

OK guys, your combined help has solved the issue.

I basically deactivated the program, in fact deleted it from my computer and then re installed from the website shown in the post above. On that website, once I started to download there was a licence key to copy.

Once installed went to activate, entered the key and all is well again.

Can only think that I downloaded the free trial and therefore it expired. I now have the right version which theoretically, will not expire.

Many thanks for all the input and for the resolution of my issue. Nice 84th. birthday present for me today!!

Happy Birthday Michael. Great news that the C1 problem has been sorted out with the considerable help of folks at DPreview. It is a fantastic forum.

Glad its working for you now.

A general thought for potential future need...,...

Do keep a record of the license code and also keep the installer........should ever need to reinstall it!

PS and a belated Happy Birthday

Like I found at the Capture One site, there is only one version that is downloaded by everyone whatever the download link says, and then the licence opens it up to the version you bought or can use free.

Next time do the dance by using deactivation and reactivation and see if that fixes it next time without needing the full de-installation etc path.

Congratulations to another birthday boy - my 81st was a week or so back.

Getting old is not much fun as the jobs keep piling up faster and the speed at which I do them gets slower. :-(

If you find you are getting on well with Capture One and feel you will want to use it on a regular basis, see if you can get someone to give you Nils Wille Christoffersen’s Photographer’s Guide to Capture One as an advanced present for Christmas or as a belated birthday gift - https://rawcaptureguide.gumroad.com/l/captureone22guide

It's downloadable as a PDF and I have it available on my computer and iPad. It's very comprehensive, easy to assimilate most of the time, and it cost me $22.80 a couple of years ago. There was a 40% discount available for a few days from 18th of August this year but that has now expired. There may be other discount offers in the future.

It covers everything included in the Pro version of C1 but there is a wealth of information in it which would assist you with the slightly simplified Express version. Some people are adept at finding their way through the maze of a fairly complex new application like C1. I'm not good at it (80 year old brain!) and I find the guide to be invaluable.

Aghhh! Too late, all deleted! However, I do have the link to the download site which I used to re install, and as soon as you start the download the key comes up.

Hopefully won't need it now as I know where I was going wrong. This is a version for Sony RAW (ARW) only and I head uploaded one from my drone (DNG)!

I guess the full version will process all RAW images.

Again, thanks for all the help.

The full version does now works for all makes. I recently upgraded and it was 50% off.

Perhaps do another download and license code access and keep it/them safe for future use should C1 ever decide to remove the Sony free version? Surmising of course that it does not need 'to phone home' to confirm its registration!
I always keep all downloaded programs and license keys, but if I log into Capture One with the the email and PW I used to download the free Express (for Nikon) version, I have access to my license key, as well as the download:

And as others have said, one download covers all installations, and the difference is the license key only:

I will surmise of course that it does 'phone home' to confirm its registration, as it keeps track of the computers on which it is activated:

Useful info for Express user. For a Pro version user it displays only pat of the code so need to keep a copy.

Useful info for Express user.
The Express version also obscures the last 4 character bracket when accessing "Help - About" so no point in saving that screen.

The way to see the licence is to log into the C1 account that needed to be created in the beginning and the licence is always there, whether paid or free.

I keep a separate text file with all my licences etc, (made it encrypted of course) to save logging in to accounts for most software.
For a Pro version user it displays only pat of the code so need to keep a copy.
Again, log in to C1 to see the full licence. Go to the Capture One page and click on the account symbol to get this....

From there get to see the licence and also the number of activations remaining, mine strangely says 1 remaining yet I seem to have it already activated on two computers. Should be only able to use the free version on one computer at a time.
