This long-running thread started way back in 2009.

Number 1: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/33469604

This is number 234 in the series.

GUESS THE PLACE RULES

These are the rules for this continuing thread:

Someone will post a picture of a place on Earth in this thread.
The person who guesses where it is (with the approval of he/she who posts the picture) can then post a new image of somewhere on Earth. And so on.
Both the city/town/area and the country must be stated.
It doesn't matter if it's really hard but keep in mind that people must have a chance to guess it.
If nobody has guessed it after 48 hours, a new image may be posted by anyone.
If more than one person posts a picture, the first image is in play.
New images must be posted as replies to the original message and within 24 hours; otherwise there will be a free turn.
All makes of cameras are welcome.

Note: It’s advisable that photos be checked with ’Google Lens’ reverse image search before posting a new challenge.

Name of the Islands please.

No.
We are in the South Pacific looking at a small group of islands from a larger island which is off an extremely narrow part of an even larger island.
Are the islands loud?
Well, it’s said that nearly 200 years ago a Frenchman thought they were a bit hazelnutty – and, with the lack of predators now, the large numbers of breeding seabirds might get a bit noisy at times.

The viewpoint is on a bend in a road where a very small grassed hill with a short unsealed driveway up had a trig station when the photo was taken in 2015. The trig station has since been removed but the location is still specified on at least one map.

Now heading bedwards, back in our AM.

The clues are really getting difficult as of late.

Well volks, images not immediately found by Google Lens can take a little longer.

With only the first clue to go on, Brian has obviously already located the islands but has not placed a guess - maybe he’s going for the bonus? And, before any clues at all, Victor found the right part of the Pacific - with optimum wind speed and direction a SailGP F50 could possibly sail from the Hen and Chickens to our island group in less than an hour.

Oh, that's a big clue, but I won't be able to look again until tomorrow.

Sorry volks, not Hope Saddle, you need to go more than 550km to the north. The prominent landmark visible on the horizon in the second photo is a well-photographed symmetrical shield volcano cone island - the youngest and largest of the approximately 50 volcanoes of the local volcanic field.

You must be somewhere on the west side of Waiheke Island with a view of Rangitoto. To the NE or Rangitoto is a group of islands called The Noises, just past Rakino Island. I figure the two largest islands in your picture are Motuhoropapa Island on the left and Otata Island on the right. This is the closest place I can find on Google Maps Street View. https://goo.gl/maps/ZW4oVNR4CqtjrGueA

Spot on Victor, The Noises islands. Said to have been named by the French explorer Dumont D'Urville in 1827 - Les Noisettes ("The Hazelnuts"), which later corrupted to "the Noisies" or "the Noises". Brian asked if they were loud and they are about 82km south from the Hen and Chickens group – your ‘fowl’ name. But no bonus I’m afraid, the photo was taken from Delamore Drive on Waiheke Island:

The straight line of trees that can be seen in the distance is visible on the 2014 google street view (the trees are staked) but not the 2013 version.
