Hi,

I have use and enjoy my Sony a7 mark1. However I would like a smaller camera when out with my kids, travelling etc. My budget is approx 200 Euro.

There is three cameras for sale in my area that I'm interested in -

A) Sony wx350

B) Sony HX90v

C) Sony RX100 mark 1

While I like the tiny size/weight of the camera A and B, I like the fact that camera C has a bigger sensor.

Anyone have any advise for me?

Regards,
Barry.

While I certainly can't choose for you because I have no idea what you shoot and under what conditions but for IQ the RX100M1 is better than the other 2 while they have a longer zoom. What matters more to you?

Hi,

main question is what you want to do with the photos?

For taking some snaps, for example for social media posting, you probably wouldn't experience any advantage of the bigger sensor.

However the RX100's sensor is good for professional grade IQ.

OTOH the bigger sensor imposes limitations concerning the zoom range.

I'm owning and using the Mk1 since 2012 - 10 years birthday in Fall :-) You should not forget that this age is showing sometimes, especially when it comes to AF. What about a 2nd hand later model?

Might as well use your phone instead of A or B.
Not really because A and B have focal lengths in the telephoto range that far exceed any smartphone in existence. Because of smartphones it only makes sense to use a small sensor camera if it has a very wide zoom range.

The RX100 will be the best for the zoom range in which it operates.

The HX90V will be the best for shooting far beyond the zoom range of the RX100.

The WX350 is sort of a stripped down HX90V that's missing many useful features.

I bought the Sony Rx100i today.

Paid 170 Euro, almost mint condition.

I reckon for such a low price its worth a shot.

For sure!

My brother in-law has one for years and doesn't want to replace it. Good light!

I have been using a Sony RX100 III and Sony HX50 for the last few years travelling instead of big equipment and have been totally satisfied, It's really nice not to be dragging around a big camera and multiple lenses. The RX100 gives me a bigger sensor when I need it, and the HX50 gives me more reach, Just my opinion.

Surely you must be confused on your abc's. Tell me what phone can zoom to 720mm? I have had the HX90V since Dec 2015 and I think it is the best travel camera ever made. I've the Fuji's, Pansonic's, Canon's and a host of Sony's in the p&s categories and nothing has beaten the 90v. I had a rx100 and in the same zoom range, there is little difference in the photo quality.

I've traveled half the world with it and it has served me well. In my case, the long zoom is essential.

Here's an untouched (cropped) shot of a hawk taken at max zoom 720 through a double pane window in my office:

From my limited experience with Sony - go with C.

If your phone has optical zoom that reaches 500mm or 720mm equivalent.
Exactly. I get the impression some people shoot only landscapes or things closer than 50 feet away.
Which, in reality, is true. Aside from DPR, that pretty much sums up photography, arms length or infinity focus. And that’s why cell phones dominate photography. Aside from DPR.

Why is that true? I believe people simply restrict themselves to what their camera is capable of. If they had something more versatile and capable many would expand what they took photos of.

Well, we certainly differ on that note. You seem to believe photographic subjects are a product of camera capability. I believe people know what they like to take pictures of. In the vast majority of cases, smartphones have satisfied their needs.

That's why I, twice, noted “Aside from DPR.” Which represents an infinitesimally small percent of photographers.
