I've learnt something today, Maybe everybody knows about this but just in case...

I've always understood that on all my cameras it wasn't possible to use EC when in Manual mode.

Now I've found that I can use it on the OM-1.

page 108 tells me that I can use EC with Manual providing I am in Auto ISO.

That works for me and will be very useful.

The only catch is that as far as I can see (and I may well be wrong) that to use it I have to be in the SCP and positioned on the exposure comp window. When I'm not in the SCP the two main dials, as you would expect, control the aperture and shutter speed.

Can anybody add to or correct this. Am I right in thinking that this was not available on any of my Pannys?

If you assign exposure compensation to a button you can then press and hold the button and turn the dials to increase or decrease exposure compensation.

If it hasn't been reprogrammed, the +/- EC button next to the orange video button gives direct access.

Changed from the E-M1ii and M1iii is flipping the 1/2 switch to 2, which is how I do this on those cameras (IIRC E-M1ii was the first to offer EC in M mode).

Cheers,

Your post prompted me to have a look at the page.....though I found it on page 106

And this part is especially relevant:-

* When using in M mode, rotate the front or rear dial while pressing the F (Exposure compensation) button.

So it can be adjusted whilst using the EVF rather than having to access the SCP.

PS I use Auto ISO 100% of the time ;)

It's a really good way to set up for wildlife.

Being able to control shutter, aperture and EC easily in manual mode is really useful.

Like my Nikon cameras did.

thanks, I have reset button to its original use, I wish I could just press it rather than have to hold it down.

Totally agree. I have been using a mix of S and M but I found M really needed EC to work for me and until today, I didn't know it existed.

EC in Manual Mode was one of those issues that got a lot of discussion many years ago. Some people argued that you didn't need it for manual mode, because it was manual mode. But finally, camera manufacturers got the hint that having Auto ISO in Manual Mode required EC as well.

If you use the function lever to change mode dial function, then you can assign EC to a control dial and switch to that setting. Then it will be available on demand, without holding down a function button.

If you set the arrow pad to direct function, the up arrow defaults to EC. You do have to hold the up arrow down while rotating a control dial (either one will work). I use the arrow pad in direct function, so that frees up the EC button for other use.

This capability has been available for years in earlier models.

Sounds good, I'll have a play

I don't think my old GH3 could but I haven't used it in years so can't swear to that. But the GH5 definitely supports manual shutter/aperture with auto ISO and exposure compensation. It's how I shoot when I need to raise the ISO above base. On the Gh5, there is a dedicated exposure compensation button you can use to make adjustments and bias the camera's Auto ISO decisions up or down.

If the GH5 does, it seems likely that the G9 does as well and I spent 4 years with the camera thinking it wasn't there.

I am doing the same thing and assign EC to Fn button on the lenses. It works well with Fn button on my PL 200mm F2.8 lens as well.

I’ve been using that mode on the G9 since it came out, M with auto ISO was one thing that made me buy the G9 in the first place.

Just tried setting the function lever to Mode 1, and it now in position 2 it does exposure compensation with the front dial, ISO adjust with the back dial. I had mine set to Mode 2 before, there the dials work the same in 1 and 2. No button press required.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Shooting BIF, Manual + ISO Auto, nearly always wide open with long lenses, so finally came to set

Exposure Compensation to Rear Dial,

All modes, C1 to C4 + PASM, need my thumb only, index gently remaining on shutter button.

Exposure to Front dial, (shutter speed [M+S], aperture [A] or PS [P]), as found this to be intuitive and quicker (for me) as don't have to think / remember / look the mode I am using - keeping EVF to eye level at all times

Exp Button is always set to Aperture (press + rotate rear dial)

Can anybody add to or correct this. Am I right in thinking that this was not available on any of my Pannys?
Panasonic were rather late to add this, years after Nikon/Canon/Sony, but most of their recent cameras do have this feature. I think the GX85 was about the last model that didn't, while the G9 and GX9 do.

Personally, I think M+Auto ISO+EC works a bit more elegantly on my GX9/G9 than on my OM-1. That's down to both Panasonic cameras having a 3rd dial to directly control EC (dedicated on the GX9 and customisable on the G9).

I've been using the up arrow to control EC on my OM-1 as it can't be reconfigured in direct function mode and there was something else I wanted to use the default button for. That does the job, but I find holding the arrow while rotating the (slightly stiff on my OM-1) front dial a bit awkward.

Plus there's a bit of weirdness with the arrow pad if the EC button is pressed without actually changing exposure compensatiom. It seems to convert the back arrows into duplicate exposure controls, i.e. up/down controlling shutter speed and left/right controlling aperture. It's something that has caught me out a few times, I'll hold down the up arrow, ready to roll the front dial, and find I'm pushing my shutter speed all the way to 1/32000s rather than changing EC. Just one of the OM quirks I'll get used to sooner or later...

I don't think that Exposure Compensation in M mode with Auto ISO works for the E-M5 Mark I and Mark II cameras, It first showed up in the E-M1 Mark II (I think).

I've set the rear dial to be my EC for all modes including manual. I wanted to be able to react faster than having to press a button and hold then spin the dial when using auto ISO.

Having already set the Dpad to be used as function buttons sets the up direction as EC by default and this gives me aperture control in manual mode.

Same here, since GH5. Simply press and release the ISO button, then control EC with thumb wheel. The only downside of doing this in M mode in all three bodies is that the overexposure blinkies disappear when EC is being adjusted, and only return w/ shutter button half-press - unlike S & A modes where you can see them change during EC adjustment.
