Brand new Epson P600 missing starter ink set

I was given a brand new Epson P600 printer (blue tape still on it). However it is missing the starter ink set that came with the printer. Can I still use this printer? Is there any way to initialize it without the original starter inks? Like buying a new set of original Epson inks and initializing with them? Or can you buy a starter ink set anywhere? Can I use this printer?

If it was a free gift , then yes just buy the ink set for it. If it was bought then send it back and demand a sealed box with everything in it .

You don't state where in the world you are in t=your profile so offering advice on the most affordable place to buy them is impossible.

The Starter cartridge chips "could" initiate the filling of the empty ink feed tubes, dampers and print head by triggering the printer to do so. Non-starter carts may not do this. I really don't have that answer. Your best answer will be by Epson directly.

As asked above what country version is this printer? Some Epson printers need country specific ink cartridges to match the printer country.

The Epson Service Adjustment program allows you to perform the initial ink fill, but I don't know if that means after the starter cartridges were originally used to to setup the printer the first time. Most people who ever own a new P600 would most likely use the supplied initial ink cartridges to see if the printer would work. Do you know why the original purchaser got rid of the setup carts?

I live in the USA. This printer was a gift. It was brand new in the box but the original ink set it came with had been removed.

Call Epson? That was my first thought. I spent hours trying to find a human to talk to at Epson. No luck there.

I just wanted to know if a brand new Epson full inkset would work to do the initial priming of the printer before I spend $350 for the inks.

Unless someone has actually done it, I don't think it will do an initial charge on a standard (not starter) set of cartridges, see here:

Quote: ...That is sadly not possible on the SureColor P600. You must first put the "starter cartridges" into the P600...

However, you can force an initial charge using Epson's Service Adjustment Program, apparently available here:

No guarantees from me, but this might help. Good luck.

Just use standard ink kit. No special starter needed.
I have never heard if this would work. As I stated above most owners of a new P600 would install the starter ink set and initialize the ink lines and print head. The OP needs firm confirmation that that a non-starter ink cartridge set will initialize the printer or it could be a costly mistake for him.

Gifting someone a printer without starter cartridges seems a bit odd. Why were the starter cartridges removed? Doesn't seem financially smart. Buy a new printer, remove the starter cartridges, and then give it away? For some reason the original owner didn't initialize the printer and then lost the cartridges?

I ask, because there may be a good reason the starter cartridges were removed, like the printer would not initialize, so was replaced by Epson with another printer minus starter cartridges? In which case the printer may be a dud. Something similar happened me with a Brother laser printer which arrived damaged, so they send me another laser printer minus all the consumables (toner, drum). So now I have a "free" laser printer I could give away, but which is effectively non-operational.

Doesn’t Epson have a tech line, sometimes called customer service? They should be able to definitively answer his question.
Does it state in the manual that you can only initiate with the starter set??

Apart from why the person who gave you printer did so with the starter inkset missing I wonder if Keith Cooper could throw some light on your question?

PS but it is a real puzzler as to why it came to be missing the inkset!

PPS Keith is UK based but someone USA based is Kevin Raber of PhotoPXL who uses Epson and it maybe worth contacting him via his website because AFAIK he has good contacts there?

A few years ago the P600 was a very popular printer used to print garments. They were purchased new and the ink supply system ( cartridge holder, ink feed lines, print head damper assembly) was discarded and replaced by the garment print special inks and feed system. Thus the starter cartridges were not needed and sold on Ebay very cheap.

This possibly could have been the intent of this original printer owner.

The original owner used the starter set in a different p600. He had never unboxed the printer otherwise. So he gave me a brand new printer but without the original starter ink set that it originally came with.

Yes, of course I made every effort to contact Epson support. I’ve had 4 previous p600s. But has anyone without an active warranty ever tried to reach a human to speak with at Epson? Especially for a random user with a very random, obscure, and rarely - if ever before - asked question? Not even remotely possible as far as I could tell.

dpreview is the only option.

I did hear that you can not buy and use an initialising set of inks in an already working printer. Something in the cartridge chip talks to the printer and once it has been done it is not accepted again .

Never come across the reverse,
