Portable Hard drive & connection recommendations

Looking for recommendations for a portable drive. 4 TB give or take and something rugged but small. Any recommendations? They don't seem to have power supplies. How do you power them? Is it best to connect a card reader to the drive to transfer images vs. from the camera? Not sure the connectors will be compatible.
You can't directly transfer from a reader to the drive, unless it has built-in card reader and an OS to do this. Otherwise, most portable drives will need both the external power supply (included if needed) as well as the transfer cable to connect to a laptop/desktop.
Actually, few external drives these days need external power supplies, unless you get a backup drive.

I bought this last year for backup use on a month long road trip. No external power needed. Now $99 on Amazon.

WD 5TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive HDD, USB 3.0, Compatible with PC, Mac, PS4 & Xbox - WDBU6Y0050BBK-WESN https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07X41PWTY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have to do things in two stages - download files from the camera to my computer, then from the computer to the drive. (then delete the files from the computer to make room for the next cycle) Not as bad as it sounds.

As some have mentioned, portable SSD are an option, but are much more expensive, and not necessary IMHO. Just remember to use the drive eject button before you unplug drives so the portable drive can complete file transfers.
Thank you. This looks like a good and reasonable option. Does it have a durable cover?
That isn't what you're looking for, though. It cannot transfer directly from a memory card unless copies to an intervening device first - which defeats your need to stay small & portable.

Did a bit of reading - it seems that what the OP wants no longer exists, a single portable drive with a built in card reader. I suspect the reason is that the cost of cards themselves has dropped a lot in the past few years.

The OP might consider buying a handful of SD cards. The brave among us might consider Amazon, the cheapest, but even brand name places like BH photo aren't that expensive. True, more than a HDD per TB, but much more convenient.

I use an SSD an on the go plug and either my phone or tablet to transfer pictures from my SD card to the SSD. The file manager on the phone/tablet controls the process. My on the go plug has three usb ports, an SD port and a micro SD port and is about 2" square. I have used this system or a similar one for about7 years without any problems.

It's just another USB hard drive, like others that have been discussed.

They do, but they're few & far between, and quite pricey.

I don't need to have one with a built in reader. I think someone suggested it might be an option. Thanks.
It's not that you "need" one with a built in card reader but the only drive that comes close to your spec, if you can even find one any more, will not accept an external card reader. So if you aren't shooting with an SD memory card then even that probably won't work.

cheap laptop + card reader + small HDD

As someone mentioned, you "might" be able to use a tablet instead of a laptop but that would require investigation as this is not a typical tablet use.

Interesting.

Can you provide a link?

You don't want a power supply, cause those can fail. so I would choose ones that are built in these days.

4TB is a good amount, but it would depend on you.

Sorry, no. I bought the on the go plug on eBay about 5 years ago. I purchased a Sandisk 1 TB SSD that includes a USB-C to USB-C and USB-A plug.

The closest item I saw on Amazon is linked below.

Ok, but in order to move files from a memory card to a portable drive, you will need a tablet or laptop to first download the memory card, and then from said tablet/laptop to the portable drive. In which case you’re better off with just a tablet/laptop with enough storage built in.

At least in my case, the phone or tablet does not copy any files into its memory. The file manager controls the process and copies from the SD card directly to the SSD. I use an Android phone or tablet as the controller. Perhaps Apple products work differently.

Also, by using an SSD there is virtually unlimited storage that is not possible using only the tablet's internal memory.

I spoke with B&H yesterday and they advised that I should be able to use the ipad card reader and download my images to my ipad. According to their estimation (based on what, I don't know) depending upon the size of the image with 225gb left on my ipad I should be able to get 6K-12K raw images on there. If that's the case I may buy some extra SD cards and not format the cards after I download the images. I need to confirm I'll be able to download each day's shots separate from the previous day's. My preference would be to upload them to the cloud from the ipad but I suspect the connection where we'll be staying won't be fast enough.

Thanks again, Ken.

This is exactly what I discovered after speaking with B&H yesterday. Thanks Mark.

Thank you. I think I'm going to download the images to my ipad as a backup and then to the cloud if I have a strong enough connection where I'll be staying.

... I may buy some extra SD cards and not format the cards after I download the images.
This would be my choice. With important images I do not clear the card until the pics are in the computer and backed up on a separate drive. SD cards are cheap these days.

If B&H told you that, they are wrong. My phone has only 1.2 M of available storage yet I have moved 10 times that from my SD cards to my SSD using the built in file manager and a plug in that has an SD slot and USB slots.

Are you using iPhone or Android phone?
