This is the first time it happens to me.

I was taking photos with my nearly new sony a7iv, then I imported them in lightroom and edited them. ONLY one of them had a totally fine preview, then when i opened it in the develop page it showed this wierd artifact. the other photos taken before and after this one are totally fine, the problem persists only on this. I have also tryed to update lightroom, nothing change. Anyone has experience with this? Should i have my camera checked?

also, if you want to try it yourself, here is the raw

hope someone can help, cheers

Thank you all, i've formatted the card in two ways and the problem didn't show up again for now. In this order i think it's the best (i have a computer science degree so im pretty shure of what i'm saying)

.1 slow format from PC to reset and rewrite corrupted blocks

.2 format from cam to make shure to solve any compatibility issue

Thank you all.

Because the subsequent shots were fine, most likely it's a card failure. Did you have two cards in camera? Check what's on the second card.

I'd suggest to check the memory card.

Another possibility is that it was a sporadic glitch in the sensor circuits. In this case, the issue may reappear randomly at some point in the future, probably in the same place.

Thank you very much, i was likely to belive in a card error (i hope so, deep inside), this artifact are typical manifestation of sd malfunction. Unfortunately i didn't have another card so i can't be shure at the moment, will look for future events (also hope that these don't happen). I will try to format the card, because it's a v90 prograde, and therefore it's expensive. thank you for your time.

When formatting the card it is usually safest to do so in the camera. Formatting it on other devices could potential be the cause of a problem like this.

No, formatting the card on other devices is highly unlikely to cause a problem like this.

The potentially faulty card is best to be fully formatted on a PC (don't use quick format option). it'll check and mark the faulty blocks.

Even better, if Prograde provides tools/software for its cards, it's best to use the manufacturer's software to health check the card.

Camera manufactures usually recommends formatting in camera.

Here is from Sony A7 IV manual.
  • When you use a memory card with the camera for the first time, it is recommended that you format the card on the camera for more stable performance of the memory card."

Some other suggestion from the manual...
  • If you repeatedly shoot and delete images for a long time, fragmentation of data in a file in the memory card may occur, and movie recording may be interrupted in the middle of shooting. If this happens, save your images to a computer or other storage location, then execute [Format] using this camera.
  • Memory card formatted with a computer is not guaranteed to operate with the product. Be sure to format the memory card using this product.

Please believe me, if the problem in question is caused by the faulty card, it's very, extremely unlikely to be caused by formatting on a PC.

Its best to do the card health check using the Prograde software.

That's a standard warning in case you use some non standard software for formatting.

Doing a health check with software on a PC sounds like a good way to isolate problems.

It will do no harm, provided you format the card in the camera afterwards. The only time you can strike problems with external formatting is if you don’t format it in camera afterwards.

If it does recur, I'd recommend replacing the card.

To be honest, I'd be inclined to replace the card anyway, even if it's an expensive one, because I'd hate to risk losing the best image I'd ever shot to a hardware error.

As it is not a cheap card I'd be inclined to contact Prograde and send them a copy of the image and ask for advice. They may just replace the card for you.

It could be a few things

corrupted card, or corruption on pc

i has this issue with the A7riii, was certain it was the card…. Until it wasn’t. Only occurred on one pc, when importing to another pc, no issue.

It could be Lightroom that is corrupting on import as well.
