I'm running a 24 inch iMac 2TB internal drive and an 8TB NVNe M.2 SSD external drive. I did not know you could format an external drive in APFS so I formatted it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I's been that was since this past December. Everything works fine. Would I receive any benefit if I reformatted the external drive as APFS? I would like to avoid it if possible because I would have to transfer all data to an external drive, wipe the 8TB drive and transfer all of the data back to the 8TB drive and then I would probably have to redirect Lightroom classic and "Photos" to the new drive. I did not mention that the 8TB external is strictly for data. I don't have any programs on there.

Thanks

JAW

You should be fine with Mac OS Extended if you're just storing photographs as a backup? Though I am not a tech nerd, so maybe someone else can answer your question better. I Formated in APFS with speed of rendering videos and FCPX though I use my main computer's SSD mainly for that.

If the drive is doing fine using HFS+, I'd just leave it that way.

There's no point in "fixing" what isn't broken.

MacOS Disk Utility can directly and quickly convert HFS+ to APFS without erasing, wiping, etc. I converted all of mine (about 20TB)

Yeah, there are 2 types of people:
  1. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  2. If it ain't broke, keep fixing it until it is broke. :-)
I try to be #1, but a few times I have foolishly been #2. :-)
BadaDUMP!
