I didn't think that was Gold yet...

Anyway, it is based on the Linux Browser Konqueror and nobody claimed there there would be no holes or bugs in that browser... The only claim made was that they would patch them faster then Microsoft does at the moment!

Another note about it, most plug-ins don't work on that browser so I doubt most users dropped IE for it although there is no doubt that many will. I only hope this little move by apple gets these plug-in companies to make new versions that work with both Konqueror and Safari.
Wrong -- apple makes their own web browser now.

Here it is from the design world.

Mac's were first available to graphic designers for the purpose of desktop publishing. You could make great documents with many fonts to choose from, and you could do it at a third of the price of paste up. This is 1986 we're talking about.

The main reason that most design studios use macs is because of three things:

1. The loyalty to mac programs/fonts - that is, they purchased the programs/fonts a long time ago and they don't want to buy them again for switching to PC. The upgrades have carried on the legacy.

2. For a while the mac was more equipped to handle intense graphics and type. Not anymore.

3. Marketing - Because they cost a fortune, and 'all the cool design firms are using them,' I guess we should get them too. Most people belive that if you have a design studio, you will need a mac.

My studio uses PC all the way, for photoimaging and design. They are much cheaper for way better performance and they are much easier to upgrade/customize. Mac is falling by the wayside. Maybe they have managed to let some designers (production people) go home 14 minutes earlier in the day, but that's not what I want because I'm not hardcore into production and I don't have $12,000 to spend on a funky looking thing that will be obsolete in ten days anyway. I worked at a studio where the mac costed twice as much as my PC at home and it was slightly slower! I'll spend my money on peripherals, ie:

A high end Digital SLR and prosumer camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A good scanner/printer.
A good monitor(s).

For the digital photographer or general imaging person, I expect to see way more PC users. If you bought into the mac system, I hope it wasn't becuase some sales goof led you onto believe that mac is industry standard.

My system cost only $600 canadian and it is really good for what I need.

Yeah,

If you do a lot of pre-press, then get a mac (boring). Unfortunatley, I hate production work, and my studio specializes in creative. My printers on the other hand really take care of me!!

Most people here are photographers, and most likely, do not ever 'dabble' in prepress (uggh, even the name puts me to sleep). Photographers like to create images not print 1,000,000 annual reports.

PDF uses the same language that goes to the printer. So pdf's are leading the way. end of story there.

As for cochroaches, they are way more superior to us, and they will certainly live longer.

What has that gotta do with anything? Coackroaches outnumber humans
100 to 1 on this planet -are they a superior lifeform? There are
more Chevettes than Porsches and Volvos -are they superior cars?

All pros I know use Macs. When you use pre-press services, etc.,
they usually get it right the first time around. The guys who
insist that paying $100 less for their virus ridden boxes is most
important, just keep going over and over to get things right. For
pros, life is too short for this. If your time is worthless and you
can afford all the hidden costs of PCs (e.g., anti-virus software
for as long as you live, endless tech support, repeat jobs, being
at the mercy of Bill Gates, etc.), then go for it.

Last time I checked with the Rochester Institute of Technology,
certainly the premier school for commercial printing, Macs were the
only game in town. When you have a $300,000 press-run on the go you
don't trust PCs. We're not talking 0.49 cents 4x6 inch snapshots
here. Sure they have PCs for reasons of political correctness and
you can get them to work fairly well, eventually, but nobody would
ever recommend them to their friends or their customers.

Safari is NOT Konqueror!

From Konqueror it uses the KHTML low-level render engine, and KJS which is a JavaScript interpreter. Other than that Safari is its own thing, with its own feature set and look and feel.

Apple continues to modify and optimize KHTML and KJS and put the results back into the open source world like good open source citizens.

Safari plug-ins are the same as Netscape plug-ins, if I remember correctly. At any rate there are plug-ins available to do specific things, should you want to.

Every ad agency I deal with is Mac based. Sometimes they want me to lay images into their Quark files, etc. Why hassle with cross platform problems?

Sure, some PCs may be slightly cheaper, maybe, but Macs have always served me well, been hassle-free, fast, stable and easier to work with. I sit in front of this thing a few dozen hours a week. Better ergonomics, quieter drives, fewer crashes,... my time is too valuable to waste solving problems. I don't want to be an IT guy.

And, that Apple G5 and 23 inch and 20 inch LCD monitors are darn nice looking with clean, bright, color accurate images. That pleases me, makes work easier, and impresses clients. Perception is everything- especially in an image related business.

plus I like the idea of shopping with one firm. If you buy a Mac desktop with enough RAM and HD space you know that it will be suitable for photographic work, with PC you must know all the details of the innards of the machine, graphics cards etc .

Mac is my 1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice, pcs are OK sometimes but they are not Macs.

PC. Till 7 years ago I had a mac and I was a mac fanatic. I paid $8000 for my mac system and I loved it. Back then my lovely, great mac was better than any PC. Now I have a PC and I am neutral on the issue. The PC gets my work done quite well. It cost $1500 and it's 2000 times faster than my old mac. I tried a new mac last month but now it feels awkward to use and I can't run some of my fav software on it.
