Wifey says to get the 10d! (It's my Christmas present.)

I've been reading this forum for a few weeks, and have read all the pros and cons. I was ready to purchase the 300d with a 28-135 IS USM lens for about $100 more the the 10d body alone, but wifey says she would rather pay the extra money, so that we wouldn't end up buying another camera next year.

1) Now from all I read, is the 10d really worth the extra $500 for a few software enabled features and a magnesium body?

2) $2100 = DR300d w/ EF-s 18-55, 28-135 IS USM, 75-300 IS USM
or 10d w/ 28-135 IS USM.

We I look at value vs "performance" I want to lean towards value, but I don't want to regret it, and have the shoulda, coulda, blues. What would you do?

TIA

On hindsight, I should had got the 10D instead of the DR. The flash under-exposure problems is just very frustrating. :-)

Me, I'd get the 3 lenses and the digital rebel. Look at what pictures you're planning to take, the differences.. and if you can live w/o them or not. .. More better glass = better! (to me anyway)

Nah, get the Rebel D. You'll get another camera next year anyway. It may as well be the 10D replacement. You'll never regret having the Rebel D but you would regret not getting the 10D replacement whatever it is.

$2000/2100 (depending on ext. Flash)
DR w/kit lens (1000)
28-135 IS ($400 - bhphotovideo.com)
75-300 IS ($400 - bhphotovideo.com)

Sigma 500 DG Super ($200) or 550EX ($300) both of these flashes have FEC which you can set manually on the flash and works great with the DR.

or better yet...

trash the 75-300 IS and go for the 70 - 200 f/4L (less than 600 virtually anywhere online)

throw in the canon 50mm 1.8 for 70 bucks and you have a combination of camera and lens that will make and highend/amatuer proud.

if you really want the "feel" of the 10D throw in another $80 and get the battery grip/vertical shutter.... really balances out the Rebel and gives it a pro feel. you will thank God for the lightness of it when you are carrying it around for hours or when you snap on an L lens or Sigma EX series lens...

happy shooting... get the DR and save 500 bucks... put that towards glass... the picuture quality is identical on the two cameras .. save the money and get better glass....

10d or rebel.... the question of the century...

I would get the 10d, then I would by my wife the 300d, then I would use both of them whenever she wasn't photographing. I would have different lenses on each, go out and take a lot of pictures. Buy the lenses you like, and later, when Canon has better bodies, get yourself a new one. They are nice cameras, nice lenses.

I think it depends on your particular needs whether the extra features are worth it for you, it's worth reading Phil's review of the 300D for a detailed description of the differences. In the scenario you outlined you also need to consider the restrictions placed on your photography by having less lens selections but a better body.

My personal take is this: Digital photography is still in the development stages and there are going to be better, newer, cheaper cameras coming out every few months for the next few years, so you're always going to be frustrated if you're concerned about not having the best available. I got the 3ooD because it's the cheapest camera available right now that allows me to devlop my skills with a full SLR and is compatible with lenses that I can use on a top-end camera in the future. In say 5 years time when the development cycle has stabilized and digital cameras have come down to say the price level of equivalent film cameras then (assuming I find I have any talent) I'l buy the best body I can afford, in the meantime I'd rather get the cheapest compatible body I can and spend my money on lenses etc.

Stop worrying, get a camera and take some pictures. I never even thought that the camera had underexposure problems, misaligned sensors or dust or back/front focus issues until I started reading these posts. Good thing too, or I would have missed a lot of shots... I got the rebel because I like SLR cameras and I like taking pictures, and like you thought frugally, waiting for something affordable to come out. That's why I missed a picture of a pelican flying by earlier, there was too much shutter lag, etc., couldn't focus, couldn't see. So now a DSLR is the way to go. Oh, another thing you might have to begin worrying about, a long lens on the 10d and the popup flash doesn't go as high as the rebel... Now what else can go wrong....

I'd go for the 300d, but that is just me, I figure I'm more likely to upgrade to do technology changes that I am about the camera breaking. To help assure longevity I got extended warranty.

As far as your lens choices, if you are getting a 75-300 IS why not skip the 28-135 IS. Your not as likley to need IS at the wide end, and as for the gap between 55 and 70, its not a big deal. If you want something in the middle, just shoot at 55 and crop in later on and just give up a little resolution. I don't find I need that mid range anyway, I'm shooting wide or I want a lot of zoom.

Whatever you get I'm sure you will enjoy it.

If you end up buying another camera next year, it probably won't be the 10d - Canon will certainly have a replacement model by then for the same price.

With the 10D, count on getting at least the 17-40F4 if you want any indoor group shots. That is an additional $700.

Next year there will be another model that you'll want (At least I would) that will make the 10D and 300D feel old. If money is no object heck, get the 1DS for $5700. I personally believe that all the highend cameras are over priced. Canon has to be making a killing on these given the fact that the similar film cameras are 80% less money. Prices are set by marketing more than by acutual cost. Any time you get into the highest level of technology you will pay a premium. I don't feel the 10D's body is worth $500 more but if you want those features and you can afford it, then go for it.

Both cameras are great. I miss some of the CF functions not on the DR...If you are doing any seroius macro work, you would wand the pre triggering of the mirror....you can do that with the 10D but not the DR...also, no matter what has been said, the EFC is a good feature.

Look at the side by side comparisons on the 300D review on this site, evaluate, then make yor desicion....

Get a DR TIA...Lenses stay, bodies come and go. Next year, some thing much better will be out, you would feel much better upgrading from DR than the 10D...and that is the fact!

Here is your list,
  • DR
  • Canon 28-135 IS (great lens, Good range, great in low light, small...)
  • Canon 70-200 F4 L

DT,

Ya that's a nice thought on the lenses/flash, thanks. The example I gave isn't actually my lens choice, I was just giving an example of what I could get with $2100. I kind of like the idea of 18-300 for a full range of senarios, but really not what I need. More than likely it the 18-55 and a mid range zoom is all I'll need to start with. Although that 50 - 1.8 lens would be great for some dramatic portraits, and for $70 bucks it might be a wise addtion.

I rarely use flash, so I didn't think that the 300d was a bad choice for me. I guess I'll go with my gut and get the DR... even though I was (and still am) pretty tempted when Wifey says to go for the 10d. ;-)

I got the rebel and liked it so much I switched the studio from nikon to canon. I sold the fuji s2's on ebay and got 2 10d's. however I picked the 10d's because they looked more professional than the rebel, but sometimes I feel that my dr outperfoms the 10d's and I'm not quite sure why. the rebel is a great camera - I think I have 10 times more exposures on it than the 10d's combined. and it's busy season.

did you expect to get in the 300D forum? If this was asked in the 10D forum you'd be knocked silly by a lot of posters for even seriously comparing the two cameras.

Steaktaco has both and prefers the Rebel D, I have both and I think the 10D is well worth the extra money.

Only you know what features are important to you and how much money you have for glass, not me or steaktaco or anyone else in the forum.

I would go for the 300d, 18-55, 75-300 IS USM. NO way that 125 would be enough for me..it is very small range.

don't forget that with the 10D 28mm is going to be closer to 55mm. not exactly wide. if you want the equivalent on the 10D in wide angle...your only choice is the expensive wide angle lenses. The kit lens only fits on the 300d.
