After R7 now I want to start tracking in all AF modes in Canon R5

It would be good pro consumer move on Canon side but I would be extremely surprised if that actually happened.

Canon with it's market segmentation will happily sell you a new body. No money in upgrades to the previous models as it increases the odds that you will pay again for the upgrade.

R did not received focus stacking, RP focus assistance (the three triangles thing). AF upgrades in R and RP were forced so Canon could stay in mirrorless race. Most bodies receive bug fixes only and support for the new lens.

R7 has also 1/16000 in ES...
The M6II (similar sensor) also goes to 1/16,000 in ES. I have used it occasionally to shoot at F1.4 in bright sunlight.

which is nonsense as they all have Digic X processors. If these features from the R3 are in the R7 and R10 its fairly reasonable to expect they will be added to the R5 and R6 firmware too
Be nice.

It should not matter if it can do it at all, which it seems to.

And you are correct about being nice and we hope Canon will be nice as well

It seems also the R10.

So top and bottom of the range have the ability, but a no no for the middle.
The really painful piece is the $900 camera will have something the $3,900 one doesn't even though they use similar if not identical hardware. Go figure. But I do believe they will offer it in a firmware update... I hope.

After shooting with the R3 all week and trying to use the R5's facsimile of the tracking mode, its not in the same ball park in action, however, the way the AF works in general isn't very far off R3 otherwise. Personally I think Canon held off offering it in the last firmware update to protect the R3 sales, but with these coming out, it should be fair game. Fingers crossed.

Please Canon, release a firmware upgrade to let also the R5 start tracking AF in all modes like the R3 and R7 and not only in Eye Af Mode...

Please ...
Just recently got the R3 coming from an R5 and this is one of the biggest AF upgrade, its so awesome.
Just tried the R3 all this week and I'll be missing this feature when I give the R3 back. 100%, the single most wanted thing off of that camera.

That's called the R5 MK II, they will be more than happy to sell you a brand new camera with the "updated AF system", haha, good old Canon marketing.

I have tried to configure our R5 in various ways, but still find it quite confusing:
  • I do not like the AF mode without initial focus point - I really don't want the camera to choose whatever it wants in the scene. OK, that's easy to set.
  • With tracking assigned to one of the buttons, I use kind of hybrid "focus and recompose track" aproach. Simply pointing the focus point at the desired subject/object, pressing the button and freely recompose elsewhere.
  • But - my wife likes to use one point AF from time to time. And in this mode, the stupid servo refocuses, instead of tracking the subject. It is an old school, useless mode, which basically prevents you to use one point AF mode in a consistent manner with another modes.
I would like the ability to discard one point AF servo refocusing mode and track the subject instead!

Its hardly an upgrade when its added to lesser models already, pretty much guaranteed just a firmware tweek that will come

Some time ago, I read that Canon would be releasing a 'major' firmware release for the R5/6. I though it might be the release 1.5, but that was just a fix and addition of vehicle detection. Something like AF in all modes would really be 'major'

I'd say 1.5 was about and big of a release as can be expected, so I'm not expecting a 2.0 release. Now, hopefully we do get a 1.6.0 adding the subject tracking, but Canon doesn't always do what the people want.

Even if it could be done with a firmware update, the R5 & R6 may not see such an update. It may depend more on the timing on R5 & R6 replacements. At present, the feature serves as an incentive to buy the other newer R series bodies.

R7 has also 1/16000 in ES...
That is more to do with the smaller sensor I would wager.
The GFX100 has a MUCH slower readout speed in electronic shutter and can do 1/16000 as well with an even bigger sensor. That 1/8000 limit makes no sense.

Just like the way you can’t select burst speed other than 1 or 20, two super odd things about the R6/5 that nobody understands why.

Isn’t subject to detect ‚none‘ what you want with the tracking?
He meant exactly what the thread name is saying: tracking in every AF mode. Theres only one mode wich can track on the r6/5, and can be either set full auto (similar to wide area) or single spot track (and you need to go in the menu to change it)

Every other mode does not track the subject, meaning if you subject move past your AF points the camera will focus only in that area and not follow your subject.
