I initially dismissed this camera as replacement for my 7dmk2 because had expected a stacked sensor and better evf but It's grown on me I've pre ordered. I was wondering if anyone tested AF and image quality with the Metabones EF-RF Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x I would love it if it works. I'm really not too excited about RF lenses on this crop seems too expensive for us in the UK. I'm mostly going to use this for wildlife and EF telephoto lenses. If the speedbooster works should be great with the 300mm F2.8LIS.

Hi Necip,

If you've ordered your R7 in the UK, my understanding is the first batch will come supplied with a free Canon EF-RF Adapter. This will provide a seamless match with all your EF/ EF-S lenses providing equivalent, or possibly improved, performance to a native connection.

(I have no idea about how the Metabones EF-RF Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x will integrate).

Whilst there is no R7 equivalent available yet, the R5 FAQ page has some information about lens compatibility and performance, which you may find interesting. Link Here. (Just bear in mind some of the information provided is a little dated - and the R7 may well be different).

I expect that Canon mount adapter EF – EOS R 0.71 would work on R7 or R10. I use it on R & R6 with EF lenses for both photos & mostly videos; you have a bit dark corners but if you crop to 16:9 or 1:1 … well it is perfect for my personal use (I like it very much for videos in low light). You can add a polarizer and/or ND filter in front of the lens like EF 50 & 85 f1.2 but also sigma 135 f1.8 & 40 f1.4 and shoot in day light, the results are very nice & cool to my taste.

R7 looks nice on paper and I would buy it … only if I would not have an EOS R6, but again I was a bit disappointed by the JPGs posted online. However, I like slow motion and if R7 would have at least 240fps or better 480 fps … well I would buy it immediately :-).

I use the R6 with the RF 2X extender and EF lens like 100-400 II & sigma S 150-600, if the light if good, the JPGs from R6 look much nicer than R7 JPGs posted online (again my personal taste).

This is good the dark corners/vignetting I probably won't get with my Canon 300mm f2.8LIS as I think it already has a slightly bigger image circle than even FF to begin with.

I was also disappointed with the jpgs but I'm hoping the raw should be good less heavy processing.

Yes the R6 gives a beautiful clean image I would have preferred the R7 with quality 24 mp rather than the 32.5mp It's probably expecting too much from the cheap RFs lenses so the images are soft looking because of the lens rather than sensor. I use the 100-400mm II as well which has a lot of resolution to begin with the 300mm f2.8LIS has plenty of resolution in the objective also, I've done moon shots with 3 converters stacked on it still good detail. I would have bought the R5 but I didn't want to spend too much on Canon goods at this point till we see decent stacked sensors. Got a feeling Nikon will come out with a dream camera Z8 like a Z9 fully featured but smaller body with no mech shutter. I also like Nikon lenses their light pf.

I'm in the EU and have preordered the R7, which will come with a free EF-RF adapter. I plan to purchase the Vitrox speedbooster to use with EF lenses to acquire more light. No guarantees it will work but willing to try it anyway.

this come from the CANON EOS R7 specifications , see canon site:

5 .The operation of the RF 5.2 mm F 2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE is not guaranteed. Excluding EF-M lenses. Operation of EF Cinema Lens is not guaranteed. Operation of the mount adapter EF-EOS R 0.71 X (sold separately) is not guaranteed.

well spotted. It's such a vague statement isn't it? not guaranteed in what way, maybe it's just a few wide lenses the fact they mention one of them.

Yes this is certainly worth looking into. Considering I would likely want to use the adapter at times I want it for extra light in astrophotography so no problem even if it's not great AF.

i wouldn't worry about jpegs now, those can be fixed with firmware in no time. what is important to me is IBIS, eye-focus, and 30+mp features. and those features sound impressive, so far. i am very excited.

Canon 0.71X adapter is better than Metabones one because the glass elements are larger in diameter. For the Canon adapter you get a warning that the adapter might be not compatible, just click OK and everything works on R & R6 (of course does not report the wider aperture, but if you use a wide aperture lens the results have a kind of ‘magic’ on full frame, but of course as with a tilt-shift lens you must learn to use that ‘magic’). The dark corners I speak about are on a full frame sensor, nevertheless the center part that corresponds to an APS-C size area is very sharp (to my opinion). Therefore, I suppose the Canon adapter on the R7 would have a very good image quality, like mounting the EF lens on an EOS R. Now, if the focusing of R7 in darker or busy environment is good, then I suppose an R7 with a Canon 0.71X adapter will compete with an R5 for the photos you can get for wildlife (for a nonprofessional amateur person like me). Since I think the life is too short for some of us, my personal dilemma is to buy an R7 or another nice lens … :-)

R7 will be my 6th canon camera since 2006 and it has been quite a journey experiencing all of these cameras. my 5D (the 1st one) is just as good as the 1st day when i pressed the shutter button and still takes fantastic photos. so now here we are waiting patiently for R7 - i am pretty sure it'll be another canon jewel to play with and make sweet memories :-)
