Hello everyone! I am using the first generation Canon 28-105mm for my newly acquired Canon 10d and was curious if any one knows of the difference in quality with the second generation lens. I was gearing toward the 28-135 IS, but was wondering does quality differ enough to purchase a newer lens.Any input would be helpful. Thanks

I take it you are talking about the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM and USM II? If so, optically they are the same. You can check the Canon Camera Museum and see. From reading the description of the II lens, the difference is in the finish of the body of the lens and nothing more.

Actually, the versioning on this lens is a bit weird. There are two different variants of the Mk 1: the Mk1.0 has a five-blade iris and the "macro" position is indicated by a flower symbol. The Mk1.1 and subsequent versions have seven-blade irises and some other symbol for macro.

I don't think the number of iris blades makes a very significant difference, but if I had the choice, I'd definitely pick the 1.1 or 2 over the 1.0.

So, the Mk1.1 and Mk2 are optically identical, but the Mk1.0 is very slightly different. Go figure.
