Not only is the tripod foot for each lens removable, they are also interchangeable.

Yes, I too have both of those lenses, and the tripod feet are interchangeable. I bought the Hejnar replacement feet for them, and it is the same model of replacement foot for both lenses.

Since the original foot for my 500mm PF came off once, causing the lens with my D5 attached drop to the ground, resulting in a $600 repair bill, I now use Hejnar replacement feet that are screwed onto the collar, without any quick release.

So, two useless feet for the price of one.
Why do you feel they are useless?
Since time began Nikon feet have been considered useless as they aint Arca Swiss amonst other reasons of stability etc. The likes of RSS have done very well out of supplying proper after market replacements for many years accordingly.

I'd say useless is overstating things, but some Nikon feet are truly horrible! The 70-200 S is better but still the base had screws that needed blue loc tite new from the box. The 500pf same, and the 'lever' that removes the foot portion easy to undo so the lens and foot are easily separated by mistake! The knobs and things in general are too small when compared to higher quality feet. I have no statistics, but I would wager that a large portion of Nikon tripod feet have historically been replaced by Kirk or RRS.

Then there is the entire why doesn't Nikon make their feet Arca compatible from the factory? if you want to use it on a mono/tripod, you need a plate.

YEP.

All of my Nikon lenses that have "feet" are Arca Swiss compatible from RRS as are the brackets on my cameras .

Makes sense, I guess I have always just put a plate on the feet and never thought about it much. But it would be great if they were Arca Swiss compatible.

Rather than pay for an aftermarket foot, I just added a short Arca-Swiss plate

Ellis, the problem with this approach is that you are keeping that QR joint from Nikon. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the one on my 500mm PF failed and caused my D5 along with the 500 PF to fall onto concrete, resulting in a $600 repair bill.

I would never trust that kind of Nikon QR joint again. I have replaced the feet on my 70-200/2.8 S and 100-400 S with screw-on type feet with Arca-Swiss dove tail.

I’ve never heard of the Hejnar replacement feet before - thank you! I don’t trust the attachment in my 70-200S either, I had no idea these were available.

I would like to have a Tripod foot replacement that are both useable for arca swiss Tripod Mount and Monopod 1/4-20 screw mount without having to add or subtract another plate....

Does anybody know of such Plate or foot replacement.?

Back in 2019, I had a very long thread on the 500mm PF foot issue: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4415235

The Hejnar foot (for the 500mm PF) is recommended by Steve Perry, since his Nikon foot also failed once: https://backcountrygallery.com/nikon-500-pf-review/

I now have the Hejnar feet for the 500mm PF and for both the 70-200/2.8 S and 100-400 S. Chris Hejnar seems to be a Polish-American gentleman with his shop in the Chicago area.

Let's flog that dead horse a little more.

Since time began, Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. have not in my recollection provided Arca-Swiss compatible mounts and I doubt seriously that they ever will. And really, I couldn't care less. In general, I often need a longer A-S mount that allows me to slide a smaller or lighter lens (70-200 or 500pf) forward on a gimbal or tripod head to better balance with a gripped or Dx body, so I'd have to buy an A-S rail anyway.

As for the QR mount that Nikon provides for their various lenses, true, if you don't tighten the clamping bolt when you put it on, it can fall off if the release lever is depressed while carrying the lens. I've dealt with this matter since I bought a 70-200 VR back in 2006, later with the 70-200E FL and lastly the 500pf...none have fallen off because I tighten the bolt securely and never have I had the bolt loosen in the slightest. And I often do take the foot off when I'm going to be in a situation of handholding the lens rather than just rotating it up to the top or to one side...I find that QR option very convenient and am glad to have it available. And I'm glad the 100-400mm I pick up on Friday has it. I wonder if it's compatible with the ones used on the earlier F-mount lenses. Has anyone looked at that?

The clamping bolt is a back up...and as we all know, some people need two backups...or three...:)

Cheers!

I haven't changed the Nikon foot on any of my lenses. So long as the knob is properly tightened the lens won't drop even if you hit the button by mistake. IMO Nikon gets a bad rap over the design, but if the foot is tightened properly it requires two actions to remove the foot, loosening the knob then pushing the release button.

I simply carry a medium length Arca Swiss-type plate and an appropriately-sized Allen wrench to tighten it securely to the foot. Never had a problem on my 500PF, 70-200FL, etc.

Agreed. You have hit upon one of the reasons for the term "idiot proof".

You've also added weight, and another possible failure point (the mounting screws).

The root problem (not Arca-Swiss compatible from the factory) is still there though. Nikon is not alone in this, but that's not an excuse.
