I am looking to buy a decent camera with lens in the price range of 600-900$.

While doing my research,I immediately fell in love with the sony 6000 .It had all the features which would allow me to try my hand on wildlife photography(as a first timer)

It had two lenses one 16-50 mm lens and the other is a 55-210 mm lens All in the price range of 800 $.

But today when I contacted the retail store,I was told that the camera has been discontinued. Not just this particular model but all models under the 6 series.

So ,now I have to go back to the drawing board. And I would appreciate it if the community could give me some suggestions on finding a camera in the same budget (if it's possible)

From my end,I am looking at the NikonD5600 and pansaonic lumix G7.

Although nikon dslr comes with a lens that has better magnification compared to sony,I feel that its fps in continuous shooting mode is comparatively smaller than both the sony model and pansaonic model. After all, when choosing the camera for wildlife settings, the fps in continuous shooting mode is an important factor,as per my understanding.

So.in conclusion I would appreciate if the community could guide me in choosing a camera .Also what other factors apart from continuous fps and no of images recorded should I be looking at.

Hello,

Welcome to the DPR forums. You may find that you get a lot of replies here from people who prefer particular cameras and who suggest that you try those. All I have to say is that if I were in your position, I would not buy a new outfit. There are several companies which deal in used camera equipment. One such, based in the UK, is MPB. They also operate in North America and Europe and have an outstanding reputation. You will be able to buy a Sony 6000 and lenses from them for less than your maximum budget. Don’t worry about used equipment - MPB and the other companies guarantee it and they also give a very good description of the condition. I have bought two Nikon DSLRs and several lenses from them. The last Nikon had a shutter count of less than 1000 and cost less than half the new price.

thanks redhenry ,I will try to look into that option also

for now I am gravitating towards olympus mark 10 ii

compared to cannon and nikon dslr I feel that it comes close to the sony camera.

Also, looking at the olympus reviews it seems that the camera was released in 2015,therefore would that have any effects on its future performance

The Olympus EM-10ii is a lovely camera and very popular among the contributors to these forums. There are those who would point out that it has a micro-four-thirds sensor, rather than the larger APS-C sensors in many Nikon, Canon and Sony models. In practice, though, you would be unlikely to notice the difference. I should also point out that this thread belongs in the ‘buying advice’ forum!

thanks henry. As pointed by Jethro B UK one distinguishing feature between the olympus and cannon EOS M50 (or for that matter the sony A 6000) is that while olympus uses contrast detection, canon and sony both offer hybrid detection mode.

What is the difference between them, and what would be the pros and cons.

The reason i am asking is that in case i am not able to get my hand on the olympus model, then I might go for cannon eos M50.

It's listed on the sony india website also, but when i contacted the official sony retailer in india, they all said nope it's not available.

The A6400 and A6600 are still current. The A6000, A6300, and A6500 have been discontinued.

Hey tom,

I don't know the dealers I spoke to said that entire 6 series is not available.

Who knows but I will definitely look into 64 and 65.

also, after a lot of head wrangling ,I decided to go for sony zv-e10

i looked at olympus tutorials and found it to be confusing

cannon eos m50 sounds neat but i need to invest in lens and adaptors.

Basically i was thinking that if i want to invest in canon eos m50 then i might as well buy sony zv not only is it better than eos m50 but the entire package fits in my budget(which needed to be stretched a bit)

But you had seemed interested in wildlife, birds in flight and those types of photographs. This camera is not aimed at that audience as strongly as the vlogging audience. It does not have a viewfinder, unless I'm missing something, which will make it very difficult if not impossible to attempt birds in flight, and tough for many things outside in bright conditions. But it's your choice, so you are the one that needs to be happy.

I am interested in wildlife.

And based on this link as well as the review of OMD M10 on this forum

it seems that my initial misgiving s about OMD M10 were proven to be correct. As someone else pointed out OMD M10 is contrast based detection which might make it slow to capture fast moving objects.

And then it's control panel i literally had to go through 5 videos just to get the basic.

But with sony vlog boom one video and the control felt more easy.Plus i also discovered that when you use wide angle lens with sony ZV 10 then if your zoom setting is set to optical zoom you might run into "LENS NOT VALID ERROR" which can be fixed with simply changing the zoom setting to either clear/digital.

Of course all of this is still a plan in making.Until and unless i hold the camera in my hand snap some shots tweak the menu we can't say.Plus it aslo depends on wether the model is still available when I plan to purchase it.

BTW Since,I have your attention could you help me understand the difference between sony E 55-210 mm F4.5-6.3 OSS and DT 55–200 mm F4–5.6 SAM II

From what i could figure out it seems that the former has in lens image stabilisation.

Plus if you have some easy tutorials and settings which will help me to use the OMD M10 I would love to hear your opinion.

Also in the end ,these are my decisions

1.Sony ZV E10(purchase if available)

2.Olympus M10(pros good fps affordable doesn't put dent in my budget, cons difficult interface and low res compared to other cameras I mean you have 24 MP on one hand and then 16MP on the other)

sorry cannon eos m50 you are good, but you need a lot of additinoal investment.

oh i just looked into the viewfinder thing, yes it doesn't have that and same applies for stabilization aspect.

ARGH

sigh

Hello again,

If you’re still looking for our opinions, I have had a look at the Sony ZV-E10 and I think it’s an excellent choice. You will have very good image quality and also all the things you liked about the Sony 6000 series. If I were you, I would buy it with the 16-50mm lens and get used to that before buying another lens. There are many used Sony lenses available at MPB so you could email the company and ask whether they would send one to India.

thanks but do you think that the lack of electronic view finder would be a serious problem.

Also,if you don't mind me asking I was looking at the tamron lens.are they compatible with cannon m mount cameras. If yes, then do I need to purchase a lens adaptor for that.

As I mentioned earlier, its close call between cannon and sony.

although cannon comes with EVF,in order to use a seperate lens,I will have to buy an adaptor with it.Plus I found the tamaron lenses to be more affordable as compared to the cannon 75-300 mm.

Finally about experimenting with the 18-50 mm ,that's my plan.I plan on using the model first on a trial test run before actually shooting some serious photos in an actual safari.

And thanks for the comment. It definitely brought some peace of mind

I have owned several types of digital camera, with and without viewfinders. Although many people who contribute to these forums dislike cameras without viewfinders, I have always found that a screen suits me, especially if it is articulated like the screen on the Sony.
As for the lens, several manufacturers supply lenses which are designed for the Sony lens mount so you should not need an adaptor.

thanks are there any tutorials that i can refer to which will help me get used to photographing without viewfinders.

6500 has been discontinued. The 6400 and 6600 have not.

The 'E' lens is a native E-mount lens for E-mount cameras. The other is a native A-mount lens for A-mount cameras and would require an adapter to be used on an E-mount camera.
From what i could figure out it seems that the former has in lens image stabilisation.
That too. Sony A-mount cameras all have sensor-based stabilization, though.

Not available doesn't necessarily mean discontinued. Many things are temporarily unavailable in certain markets due to supply chain issues.

Yikes. Following fast-moving animals with a long lens, a side-mounted LCD, and no EVF?
