Dumb Firmware Mistake: erase setting?

I recently bought a refurb Olympus OM D M5 mk3 from Olympus during their refurb sale. I dove into the somewhat obtuse menu system to set up the camera to my liking using the .pdf manual and D. Thorpe menu guide. Nearly a full day of reading, etc. Then a late brain flash. I wonder if my new F4 Pro lenses will work with focus stacking. No. Check the firmware. Oops! Camera is running 1.0 and OM website shows multiple updates to 1.6 Update to 1.2 will wipe out all settings. Oh no!. Can I update directly to from 1.0 to 1.6 without wiping out all my settings? Or, do I need to proceed up the ladder of updates one at a time. Apparently, there is no way to save the settings and restore them after the update. Advice, experiences? Thanks

PS: What I found frustrating about the menu system is how settings in one menu are affected by settings in another distant menu without any in camera hints. Confusing.

Does the Save Settings in WS not work? Why can you not use WS to Save and Restore the settings?

Saving camera settings in OM Workspace works only for some camera models, I think. It works for my Pen-F but not for my E-M10. Worth a shot though: install OM Workspace and try "save settings" in the camera menue.

If you cannot save your settings then you'll have to set up your camera again, I'm afraid. Second time's the charm, right? It'll be easier than the first time, though. And you're probably going to change a lot of the settings anyway when you use the camera. It's more like a process.

E-M5.3 does not support saving settings. Sadly, you’ll have to re-setup your camera after a major firmware upgrade that resets them.

Disappointed. I now will have to go each menu and take notes because I won’t remember what I chose and why. At least I didn’t setup the C options.
thanks all

Print the pages of Default Settings and note there what you have set. It's on pages 229-240 of the manual I downloaded some time back from https://cs.olympus-imaging.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/download/manual/pen.cfm#body

The settings loss is always a pain, pity that they never found a way to do temporary saves to the SD card.

Proper firmware design in the first place would have allowed some sort of universal pattern for storing all settings and for all possible unknown future expansion to settings.

My limited efforts at software writing and maintaining taught me that early on, always allow for standardisation and for possible unknown future expansion. Just making a thing work for here and now is a total mistake.

I ended up documenting all my settings in an Excel file because multiple firmware updates have wiped them out. When I sent my camera in to have them repair the thumb pad on the back they wiped my settings (I even asked them on the support ticket not to do this).

It's a pain but take the time to document your settings.

A disappointing read, but still interesting.

Is it normal for Olympus (OMDS) to sell refurbished bodies that haven’t been updated to the latest firmware ?

Makes me wonder what “refurbished” actually means beyond a reset to factory default settings and a quick wipe.

Surely they would do a thorough clean (including the sensor), reset to factory, update to latest FW and run through a testing procedure . . . ?

Any time a camera is sent in for repair it seems to get an automatic firmware update so I expect that it happens to refurbished ones as well. But if it sets on the shelf a little while before they get to sell it then the refurbished ones may miss a firmware cycle.

In my case with my simpler E-P5 it was simply a case of grinding methodically through the menus item by item and remembering what I had set everything to. It took 30 minutes of setting up (MySets and all) on the train ride back home from picking up the E-P5 after a warranty repair.

It’s not clear what they do before selling refurbished. Obviously updating the firmware is not included.

Firmware 1.0 to 6 is a number of updates. Wonder how long this camera sat around untouched. Seems to work ok and everything looks new.
