OT..where to buy new computer

feivel,

I too had been a Dell guy for three computers before the last. The one I have is a Gateway, which I thought I'd never get, but at the time I bought they were in financial trouble and were offering a deal that couldn't be matched by Dell by a difference of $1600 with the same components. I even tried to get Dell to match the deal, but no go.

I also have a 'computer guru' who can fix anything, so I've not used either Dell or Gateway's tech support much - however when I've had to, both were usually helpful. Plus Gateway has a local store, which could be convenient for big trouble. Much depends on the chance of the draw on the phone call, and much depends on the degradation of the educational system - so it isn't an 'industry specific' problem. (I'm waiting for the day when I board a plane and the pilot's mic is on and I hear "Duuuuude, waz happenin" with Kid Rock playing in the background - nothing against Richie).
(excuse the attempt at humor).

Dell seems to always score high in the customer satisfaction in the 'repair' polls at PCMag, you might check their web site for the most recent buyers guide for 'cool new machines' - nov,25 issue just out yesterday in paper. Here, on line:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1369036,00.asp

Gateway gets an 'honorable mention' in Editor's Choice and scored higher than most on 'photos', but both Dell and Gateway and others get 4 out of 5 'dots/stars', overall.

I had a Dell for about two years, was so fed up with their customer service that when the hard drive crashed I went and bought a Sony VAIO. Love it.

There service is non existant and I don't find there PC's all that reliable or the compents to be of high quality.
enough of my PIII 700mhx, 17" monitor.

i have always bought from Dell, i like their pricing, and i trust
their technology, but their sales interface has seriously degraded.

any recommendations?

If I were going to buy a computer (instead of building it myself), I'd probably buy from this place:

http://www.abspc.com/

The only issue with them is their tech support needs longer hours. They get great reviews at http://www.resellerratings.com (9.17 out of 10 for the last 6 months VS 2.42 for Dell -- that says alot!).

Feivel,

Have you thought about building one? I've built four from scratch through the years. You can save around 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of buying one. Also you can cannibalize your existing PC for additional savings.
No need to replace your floppy drive, it's just as fast as a new one.

Unless your a gamer, your current video card should be good enough for editing/viewing pix.
Your current HD will make for a great slave drive for additional storage.
The existing keyboard, mouse, CD will be keepers as well.

For example if you have a ATX case, all you really need is to replace the power supply, mother board, CPU, memory, and a fast ATA 133 HD as a master drive.

With keeping what doesn't need to be replaced, you can build a 2.5Ghz PC with 512MB PC2700 333 memory, and DH for around $500 USD.

I'm currently in the process of upgrading one of my PCs, here's a copy of my order. I didn't shop for the lowest prices, so you may be able to do better. I've decided to keep the existing HD for now, just because I'm cheep :o)
1 AMD Boxed Athlon XP 2500+ Processor 468074 $138.70
1 ASUS A7V600 Mainboard 514617 $93.65
1 Enlight ATX 420W, Dual Fan Power Supply 407347 $51.40
1 POWERU 512MB DDR SDRAM PC2700 333MHZ 537557 $119.40

Oh, here's the two laws of a PC: You will always find one cheaper. You will always find one better.

Thanks everyone
For those of you who stuck up for Dell:

yes i have had excellent results with them too and was going to use them again, but they are not the same anymore, try calling their sales dept and ask ANY question that requires any thought, ask them whether i should get a sound card or integrated sound.

see what happens

For those that suggested I build my own. Good idea! That's what i'ill do when the cubs win the world series

actually i think im going to go with the advice of drogers and buy from abs. their feedback on resellerratings is remarkable, and everywhere there is a negative rating, there was an answer to it from abs, sometimes the other side of the story, sometimes an apology. their reviews elsewhere on the internet have also been glowing

seems buying from there is similar to building your own, except the components chosen are from the best, chosen by experts, tested thoroughly for compatibility, put together expertly and for less than if you did it yourself (my impression)

even though the lcds are attractive, i thinf im going to stick with the sony trinitron crt, only problem, the next size up from the 17" is 21", guess that's what im going to get

I was from the buy and build yourself camp for a long time, but I've found that now all of the custom drives and custom settings you get from a company like Dell make it well worth going that route.

I'm still very happy with my Dell and plan to buy a new Dell in the near future.

Despite what I said about our shop being a happy Dell camper, I may soon be buying a more powerful machine for home (Photoshop CS) use, so please let us know your experience

Don't know if this may be any help to you or not.. I also have not read all the posts. This is my personal opinion....I was a tech, Worked in a tech shop, and also owned my own... I have build computers since 1992..Altho I no longer do that, I had a good friend who is a very good tech build mine..He is in TN and I am in Fl...lol Told him what I needed it for and what I would be doing most with it, which is graphic intensive...You can get a faster more powerful machine than I did, however, I find my set-up extremly adequate. 2.4mgz processor,1 gig of DDR ram, Video card with 128 on board the card itself....Asus motherboard......Just a quick run down...Lots of other toys, But I think those mentioned are the most important..You can always add things later.

Hope this is a bit of help. I would never buy an off the shelf machine.
You are so helpful to us all of the time, I just thought I would reply

Best Regards Always

, however, I find my set-up

thanks gale
plan is 2.6 PentIV 1 gig ram, 128meg video card,

but what's this about Asus motherboard, something i should definitely be looking for??

feivel

The Asus motherboard is a highly regarded MB...Mine is a P4B533-E...I also have a Pentium 4 processor..I use voice quite a bit..So I got a Sant Cruz, Turtle Beach Sound card..Highly rated also.....(over the Sound Blaster)

http://www.asus.com

You can poke around in there and see what the latest and greatest is...lol

Things go so fast , a different model might be better...However, the model I have will handle a 3gig..
take a look see....
cheers

If you get a PIV, make sure it has hyperthreading. If not, you may want to look into an Athlon XP at a cheaper price. AMD has also retaken the speed crown with the Athlon FX and Athlon 64, though these processors are kind of pricey right now, they are the fastest consumer processors available now and will be even faster should you choose to go with a 64 bit OS and software in the near future.

I also don't think Asus is what they once were. I'm currently having problems with Windows XP because Asus didn't update the motherboard for XP compatibility (XP came out 6 months to a year after this motherboard did) Asus should have better support for their products, there is no reason for them to have abandoned it as early as they did. Currently, I think Gigabyte motherboards are hard to beat for stability, speed, support, and plain quality.

feivel,

Awesome :-)

Like everything. Would consider another smaller HD with separate controller for PS scratch disk. Or get say an 80 and a 40 instead of the 120. I'd definitely consider this place for next computer. Thanks drogers for pointing it out, and for your info, feivel. Updates required when you get the system :-)

thought about it

dont really know how this stuff works but i figured with 1.5gb ram probably dont have to worry about a scratch disc, and i didnt want to complicate things, never had 2 HDs before

feivel

did a little rese3arch kent
apparently ps uses the scratch disc regardless of HOW much ram you have
so i changed order to 2 80gig drives, another $50
thanks for the advice
