Purchased on Amazon.

It does not vignette and I keep it on all the time. I have a Sony lens cap on the front of the shade.

I bought a rubber lens hood for my 28-60 just for one use: photographing through the windows of the Sightseer Lounge car of the Empire Builder. That prevents reflections.
Did you experience vignetting?

Did the hood fit on with the lens retracted?
Yes and yes. The vignetting is heavy at 28mm but is all but gone at 35mm and is nonexistent at 40mm. I'll be careful to set the lens at 35mm before shooting through lounge car windows. That'll be the only time I use the hood.

No problem with the hood when the lens is retracted.

I also use a 40.5mm Hoya UV filter to protect the lens. The cap is tiny and easily lost.

WOW! I just received my 28-60 from MPB. I removed my 24-105 from my A7RIV, mounted the 28-60 and removed the extended grip / L bracket. What a nice small package! I realize it is not as small as an A7C but very compact by my standards and still large enough to get a good grip on it with my xtra-large hands!

I look forwards to getting out and using the lens. I can see my A7RIV going a lot of places that I would not have taken it before!

I have no feedback positive or negative on the image quality yet.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a nice small camera case that will accommodate a full sized A7 body (ArRIV preferred) and this lens for protecting the pair while still being small in size? I think I might purchase one of the auto closing lens covers linked to in a previous post.

I tried it. It is a good lens but soso for portaits.
Why "soso" for portraits?
For me "Portrait" signifies sitting a subject in a posed position, with two or three carefully balanced light sources and taking a picture with a ~100mm lens around F/1.8 - F/2.8. So to me this is not what I would consider a portrait lens.

For taking pictures of people it will do a very nice job though!

PSA: Good lens but so-so for birds-in-flight and starry night skies. ;)

I'm trying to decide between two available rubber hoods...one a generic brand (I think offered by both Amazon and BH Photo) and a Heliopan which is about three times the cost of the other hood (both on Amazon and BH). I get the impression there is "heavy" vignetting at 28mm with generic, not sure if Heliopan performs better. Any recommendations here between these two rubber hoods? I would hate to lose mm at the "wide" end (at 28mm full frame, 40mm cropped not a lot of range to give up.)

NOTE: I don't care if it vignettes in use but does not vignette when collapsed...I can live with pancaking the hood at 28mm if there is little to zero vignetting under that circumstance.

I started a thread awhile back when I decided to skip getting an A7C and just buy the 28-60 for my A7RIII or IV. And bags came up in that thread. This post shows a small Lowepro I have and in the message I quoted there’s a some other options mentioned. Mine would definitely fit the R4 though the photo shows my R3 in the bag. Not much room for anything else though. My favourite bags at the moment are the Peak Design Everyday Sling series. I have a 10L and 6L, the latter is quite small but not tiny. However I can carry my reading glasses, phone, batteries, wallet and some accessories, and even one or two moderate sized lens in the 6L. There is a 3L which I’ve skipped seeing as I have a number of spare bags but that one might be ideal for you. Here’s a link to that thread.

William, is this the heliopan or the generic rubber hood? It does not vignette at 28mm? Most seem to say these hoods do. If it doesn't vignette, or doesn't vignette with hood collapsed I'd definitely purchase this model, whichever one it is. Thanks!

Cheers!

This is a metal hood (does not collapse).

(I do have the 1655/2.8 apsc because it does render better and sometimes I need the 2.8 because I am shooting video inside a gym.)
Out of curiosity why do you use a crop lens for low light video? Are you constrained to super 35 by your frame rate? Otherwise you could use something like a 24-70mm F2.8 to get more light.

I use the Lowepro Nova Mini. It's closest current version is the Nova 170 AW II. The bags are basically identical except the new one has newer features. I've put the 28-60 on my A7II and carry it with a Godox TT350. Perfect kit for grab and go family stuff. I would use my A7RIII in place of the A7II if I was travelling light.

Thanks for the clarification. Can you mount a CPL or VND filters while using this hood?

This is what I bought on Amazon. Does not vignette at 28mm when collapsed, even atop an UV filter.

Thank you! I found this on B&H and just ordered it...a few dollars less expensive. Appreciate your input!

You can see I have a Sony 40.5 mm Protector Filter (MFR # VF-405MP) installed. I also have a Sony 62mm (ALC-F62S) lens cap installed.

I have not tried a CPL but would expect you could replace the Protector Filter with the CPL and install the hood onto that (then rotate the CPL with the hood) or maybe mount a 62mm CPL onto the front of the hood (Disclaimer: I have not tried either method of mounting a CPL).

Nice hood William. I notice in your first photos there was no filter installed. Do use that all the time?

I normally just use a hood for lens protection. Stopped using UV filters many years ago. I am of the group that says “why put an optically inferior piece of glass over a superior element”. Hoods have protected my lenses 100% since I stopped using filters. My only use for filters is ND from time to time.

This JJC one from Amazon looked interesting and reversible, though I rarely do that except for storage.

I ordered the rubber hood from BHPhoto...I just gravitate to the "softness" of rubber as a lens protector. Since I had just dramatic image degradation with a UV filter on my 70-350, I now test the filters on and off and see if I can detect any change. Pending delivery is the Gobe (URTH) kit with a VND, UV, and CPL in a single kit for around $25. I have great results with Gobe in the past; hoping this set of filters will find some use.

Answering question about my filter:

Yes, I use a Sony Zeiss T* Proctor filter on all my lenses (except 14mm f/1.8 GM). I understand the discussion among photographers about adding additional glass. I want to prevent the possibility of any micro grit getting onto the lens front element (more $$$ but just my practice and comfort - Sony Zeiss T* Proctor filter).

Wow a lot on this lens . I was going to skip, as the only one in stock was with this lens, so was going to pass .

but now I think I’ll run over to the camera store and grab the whole box.

Still will get one of new Sony or sigma primes and maybe Tamron zoom later but with this kit and a few Ef canons with adapter I will be set for a while .

This will be fun.

Thanks
