Rant about "like new" used condition.

Tell me about it

I was buying this A7RIV in "brand new condition" from this local guy

we met, and it was the most beat up A7R4 I have ever seen in my entire life, all the edges on the bottom were entirely stripped of paint, I checked the shutter count it was at 67k. I asked for explanations and here they were:

"it works like brand new but obviously it's used"

"it's impossible, I only took like 2000 photos, you're wrong"

"there are other people coming to buy, I don't care if you don't buy it"

Which is obviously true because he's asking for a relatively low price while claiming it's "brand new condition"

It never sold, for a long time. And after that he even reposted the ad for MORE MONEY, didn't sell either.

That wasn't even the only case where someone claims their stuff to be "brand new condition" or "perfect condition" is obviously used and abused, I don't understand what these idiots expect to happen with their deceptive claims.

"brand new condition" A7III, scratched screen, scratched paint all over, missing EVF eyecup, shutter count probably at over 10k "you can buy that eyecup on amazon for $10"

"perfect condition" Fuji 18-55 lens, huge gash on the lens body, dust inside rear element. "oh that's nothing! I scratched it with my nail"

"perfect condition" Voigtlander 65/2, obvious drop dents all over the lens, probably fell off a flight of concrete stairs. "Look the glass is in perfect condition"

I actually have only had one issue with a lens (out of scores of Ebay purchases over the years), a 50mm Canon lens that wouldn't focus (manual lens). Ebay covered my entire purchase price. I always ask questions before buying and examine photos carefully. And check feedback....Ebay truly favors the buyer, and guarantees you get what you ordered or your money back even if the seller says "no returns".

I just bought a 70-200 F4 G in "like new" condition for $1k from an online retailer who shall remain nameless. When I received the package, the lens is clearly several years old and has seen a lot of use. The zoom ring isn't super smooth, there's a lot of wear on the lens hood bayonet mount, and it doesn't have the original lens caps. But it did come in the original box with soft case and all packing materials. The optics are flawless.

I was pretty upset at first. But then I tried the lens, and it's amazingly sharp. Autofocus is fast and accurate Between 100-150 mm it's as sharp as my 100-400 GM. The GM barely edges it out at 200 mm. So I think it's a keeper.

I haven't decided if I'm going to complain to the vendor. (I just complained to them about a similar issue a couple of weeks ago and don't want to get banned from future purchases haha). I think it should have been listed in "good" condition, or am I just being too concerned about having shiny gear? I might have to do something to the lens hood to make it a tighter fit.
I would be interested in hearing if they made it right or how this was resolved.

Yes, they gave me almost a 20% refund to reflect their "good" condition price for the 70-200. I feel ok about it, not ecstatic, but not too disappointed since the lens takes great pictures.

I’m pleased they made some concession for you. Hopefully, if you decide to later on-sell, you won’t be out of pocket…

I must say that in all my secondhand dealings (mostly eBay) I’ve had very good gear though one reseller who I purchased my 16-35/f4 ZA off, sent a lens with some marks cleverly turned away from his photos. Knowing how easy the zoom and focus rings on those older Zeiss lenses are to mark, I had asked directly if there were any and he assured me there were none. The price was good and lens image quality good, at least as good as those lenses can be, so I didn’t take it further since I never envisage selling it again. It’s probably worth less than half what I paid now the PZ has been announced.

I’ve bought quite a few used lenses on FredMiranda with very good success and there. feedback on both the seller and buyer are expected. Make sure you leave feedback if it’s supported and only buy on sites that support it.
