Canon M50 to a compact camera equivalent in image quality?

I’ve been considering changing my canon m50 for a compact but ot sure which one would give equivalent image quality?

I am looking at G1X mk 3 or G5 mk 3.
The M50 is fab but doesn’t get used enough and I would just like a compact camera that is comparable to it in terms of image quality.

thanks

I believe either one in fine.

Can you go to a nearest camera store or order both from B&H ? :)

I believe the G1X III sensor is similar to the M50 (if not the same) but I don't know how the fixed lens compares to the EF-M offerings. The body isn't really much smaller than an M50 but the lens does collapse when it is off. The G1X III is also older than the M50 and in the powershot lineup, so some specs or features may be slightly lower end.

If you want something very compact and don't mind a prime lens, I have seen great samples from the Ricoh GR III (or X model).

I have also heard that people appreciate the Panasonic LX100 II. I suspect image quality might be a little lower but you may not notice this depending upon the application.

There is no G5 III as far as I know, so I can't comment on that. Maybe you meant the G5X II? If so, the 1" compacts, while certainly very capable, would probably fall at the bottom of this list in terms of technical image quality.

It's all relative though and depends upon what you are doing; you can take great images on any of these cameras.

The G1X III has an APS-C sensor and a 15-45mm collapsible lens that's half a stop faster than the EF-M 15-45mm with a better reputation for IQ. But it's over £1000, it's heavier than the M50 plus its 15-45mm lens and its within millimetres of the size of the m50 plus the EF-M 22mm f/2. (OK, it's nearly 15mm lower thanks to the retracting EVF, so that makes it very slightly more pocketable.) For me, the improvement in image quality over the standard zoom would be outweighed by its size, price and inability to change lenses.

The G5 III has a Sony 1" sensor, an effectively slower 15-75mm APS-C equivalent zoom and is noticeably smaller than and about ⅔ the weight of the G1X III. But on an overcast day, the pictures from my RX100 with a similar sensor to the G5 aren't even as good as those from my original EOS M with the EF-M 11-22mm, never mind my M100. The RX100 isn't bad, it's better than 35mm colour negative film even indoors without flash, but I can spot the difference to the EOS M instantly.

LX100 II is the one I would go for if I were to replace the M50 with a compact camera. Tradeoffs compared to G1X III:
  • Smaller sensor: 85% crop micro 4/3 versus APS-C
  • Smaller overall size
  • Faster lens in terms of f-stop, but probably about the same in terms of equivalence
  • (Guessing here / going based on reports I've read) autofocus performance is probably about the same. The Panasonic uses the DFD system, which is a better-performing version of contrast detect. G1X III uses DPAF but can't get the most of it with its Digic 7 processor.
  • A couple hundred dollars cheaper

The G1X III will stomp on the M50 with the 15-45 kit lens. The lens on the G1X III is much sharper and it’s the same sensor.

But otherwise be careful, it’s a downgrade in terms of sheer image quality any other point and shoot out there. Now there are other advantages to going Point and Shoot… Example, the lens on the G5x II is very “fast” and versatile at 24-120mm, it also does uncropped 4K. But it’s not quite the same image quality. Now is it acceptable IQ? Depends how you discerning you are.

I found the new Lightroom does wonders on the RAW files of the G5x II lately. That’s a very recent development.

What is driving the change? That’s what counts. Most people are probably better served looking at an M6II in my book. You can slap a 22 on it and it’s glove box status.

Where the PowerShots come in is things like portable 4K, or that fast G5x II lens, or superior 24-70 range with weather proof on the G1X III. But otherwise? M6II + 18-150 goes longer, can pair with a 32 or 11-22.

What is the M50 not doing? Or is it the 15-45 kit that isn’t? That’s a valid concern… If you’re not leaving the stock lens, yes, a PowerShot will serve you better in a nutshell. But the M is all about it’s fabulous non-stock lenses. Unless you get the unicorn 15-45 I have which isn’t common… Even then, I pair it with a 22 indoors for f/2 use.

Like other respondents I'm in favor of the G1X III. I still have the original G1, and the original G1X. Lenses vary and I would focus on that. If you don't need 4k video, or a longer zoom, it might well be your best choice.

I traded my M50 and got a 90D for video/stills, and picked up a M100 + 22mm for walking around, traveling. A better option for travel would be the ef-m 11-22mm. If it came in silver I would have bought it, but in low light f/2 is nice to have.

M200 has the upgrade to 4k video like the M50.

Basically The M50 and M200 have Digic 8

G1X III and M100 have Digic 7

All have 24mp sensors.

Good luck

Similar situation here...
And I used several cameras in the past.

The only alternative I considered at the end was Sony RX100 V because - imho - it's the only compact with a viewfinder (a must for me), excellent and quick autofocus (must no. 2 for me...) and good lens luminosity (must no. 3!), but it is too expensive.

At the end I got the M50 mark2 that I use most times during my trips (with its standard 15-45 lens) and with my son playing basketball (with a Sigma 56mm f1.4).

But then I found a cheap and old Fuji X20 that is rather compact and with good quality that for me is still rather competitive in many occasions (it even has phase-detect autofocus!). I think that if it had even a rotating display I'd use it most times instead of my M50!

it’s been a while im looking for a small camera for everyday carrying and have yet to decide on mine. Last month i passed on an opportunity to get a x20 used but in nice condition, and, oooh boy, if im regretting that. I would prefer the xf10 or x70, but those are so hard to find. i prefer not getting something used, but at that price it was a steal.

I guess your quest is because you want reduce size/bulk of a system camera?

IMHO the best compact is Sony Rx 100VII. I am not bothered by the slow lens because versatilty and focal range 24-200mm equiv. are more important to me. Yes, it is expensive, but worth the money.

Next best is Lumix TZ200, slightly less IQ and no swivel screen, but cheaper and even more tele 360mm.

I went through this and decided that this is the time to get M6 mk II.

Still on the fence regarding 18-150.

since the kit includes the evf and you get the 18-150 for $300 instead of $500 -- if I'd to do it over again, I'd get the 18-150 as a part of the kit

The only kit available is EVF + 15-45, I could probably sell the 15-45 because I own a rather good one.
