The weather finally broke here in Italy and I had a chance to get out and practice with the 28-135 IS USM. Here are a couple of samples :)

On the left hand side of the peninsula there is a women’s prison, and here is a close-up of it:

Those were nice shots. I also love taking pictures of sunsets cause the colors are so beautiful. Did you take both hand held with the IS? I just got mine and haven't had the chance to play around with it that much. I'm still trying to decide wheather to stick with this lens or go with the tamron 28-75mm Di lens.

very nice pics ..thx for sharing and if u have more of these taken with this lens it's my pleasure to see them . ;)

I couldn't afford 24-70L so I went for the 28-135 to replace my Sigma 28-108.

All I can say is that for $500, this lens is beautifull. IS does work.

If I had the oney my next lens wuld be the 70-200/2.8IS, but I'll have to earn to live with the 70-200/4 whohc is not as god, but not bad. :)

Let's have a small 28-135 sample, just for pleasure. :)

I made the mistake of trying a 24-70/2.8 and a 70-200/2.8IS yesterday. The 28-135IS, which I have always loved, has already been replaced as my always-on-the-camera lens, and I bet the 70-200/4 will be relegated to backup status soon....

The clarity of the 2.8 zooms is staggering. Don't try one!

here are some recent 28-135IS pics...

Matt:

Besides the 2.8 issue, have you seen a noticable difference in the optical quality of the 24-70 vs the 28-135? If so can you post examples?

Geoff,

Here are 100% crops from the pictures that convinced me. In the day of shooting since, I am amazed at the clarity when I shoot at a fast enough shutter speed. IS is a good thing!

Here is another 100% crop from the upper right hand corner (ignore the picture caption - temporary dyslexia) of a casual and undistinguished street scene.

A bit more noise at ISO 200 than I would have hoped, though that may be because I had to increase the contrast with levels. There's no other processing done.

Cheers,

Matt

Matt,

I agree, the 24-70L is definitely way better than the 28-135. But is s also 3 times more expensive. :)

For us living in the "non-L world" (aka. those who did not sacrify their mariage yet) the 28-135 is probably, along with the 50/1.8 the best you can have. It's definitely a step above the usual 28-105 and other entry-level stuff.

Stephan

PS: Yes, I am jealous. :)
PS2: another 28-135 sample: :)

All were taken hand held, IS on if the shutter speed was less than 1/F, no post processing.
