Are you thinking about getting the grip or have you ordered one yet ?

I placed an order on 15 Feb and I am looking forward to using it with the OM-1 when it comes.

The last I heard was that it would become available about mid March.

I'm not thinking about getting the grip. I rarely use the grips I have for other cameras. I don't plan on using the OM-1 for portrait sessions, which is when I tend to use them.

Although I will probably get one if I update my E-M1.2/1.3 bodies to OM-1, just in case.

Yes, I placed order on Feb 14th where dealer could activate on 15. He said it was accepted with the 14th date. Time zone or whatever the cause, order accepted. Camera arrived but was also told HLD-10 & free battery would be mid to late March. Same with the battery charger. Mid March now so maybe we hear soon.

Single battery does last a long time & grip on camera is actually very nice.

I am likely to order the OM1 grip. I've ordered grips for all of my DSLRs ( E1, E3, D500) and for my EM1 mk I. I like the ability to remove it for a smaller setup if desired, but for my hand size it really is more comfortable with the grip so that my hand is hanging off the edge. So for me, it isn't so much about battery life; although for the E1, E3, D500 it was to some extent.

There are a few other things I might prioritize ahead of the grip. And who knows, maybe I'll find I don't need it after all if I get used to handling the OM1 without.

Yes, my hands are large enough that the M1x feels wonderful. I can remove for air travel & couldn't do that on the x. Hope it meets my expectations.

I agree with you on the em1x. Even though I never owned it, I did handle it for a while at a launch event. I never could relate to people saying it was really big (comparatively) as I thought it was just right.

I previously had the EM1.2 followed by EM1X. The 1X was great with the 150-400 Pro but I didn't feel like I needed the larger body on the 12-100 f4 and that combo really didn't sit well on my shoulder-mounted Capture Clip (1.2 / 12-100 was fine). The 1X was also awkward to carry mounted on the 12-100 in smaller backpacks - too deep.

So, I am delighted with the OM-1 form factor. Until this morning, when I had a couple of hours out at the local pond with the 150-400. At that point I realised why I liked the 1X on it - my hands are a fair size and my little finger on my right hand ends up awkwardly under the body - doesn't seem to matter much on the 12-100 - most likely due to the weight difference.

So, the HLD-10 is the perfect solution, right? Well, it is - until I remember that it's £319 in the UK. That's (for me) difficult to justify simply for a bit of convenience.

"Is that really an issue when you have an OM-1 and 150-400 Pro?" you may ask and it would be a fair question. But:
  • funds aren't unlimited - I've really pushed the boat out for the OM-1 and 150-400 - for me, they were dreams come true and "must have".
  • I had the presence of mind to act on a very kind post in this forum about a very attractive deal on the 60mm Macro on Amazon
  • My wife has just committed to an expensive new oven (could hardly say no after her support for me trying to singlehandedly keep OM Systems in business!)
So, I think it is on the "nice-to-have" list, not "essential" and will therefore have to wait - probably indefinitely.

I ordered my OM-1 from B&H in NYC when it went on pre-sale. I also ordered, in a separate order that day, the Dual Battery Charger, an additional battery, the Battery Grip and the new OM Systems wireless and/or wired remote release for use in astrophotography.

My charger and wireless remote are being delivered today and the battery and grip remain on backorder they tell me. I understand one can charge (2) batteries via USB-C as the in0-camera-body battery charges as well as the one in the grip which is cool. I'll do that once in a while in the car probably, but I prefer to remove batteries and charge them in a proper charger. I usually wind up with 3 or 4 batteries for my MF3 bodies.

No plans to order an OM-1, but if I did, it would be with grip. Ever since my E-1, I've had cameras with grip attached, always (E1, E3, E5 and now em1.2). All these cameras just feel awkward to me without the grip. Plus, I do shoot portrait orientation a lot. I have a relatively small backpack and while the gripped camera makes for a tight fit, it still fits.

Biggest lens I use a lot is the 300, which benefits from the HLD-9, especially in portrait orientation, and given the new camera's size is on par with the E-M1ii and iii I expect I'll eventually get the new grip. They have to send me the camera, first.

It will be mandatory if I ever spring for the 150-400.

Cheers,

Rick

The bottom plate from RRS for the E-M1iii adds about 1/2" to the grip, which has been reported as making the camera easier to hold with heavy lenses.

I'm sure they will announce a similar version for the OM-1 soon. It won’t help with shooting in portrait orientation but, even though it will be expensive for what it is, it will be a lot cheaper than the HLD-10.

There will also be generic plates for the OM-1 but the grip part may not be as comfortable as the RRS one, if the generic plates for the E-M1iii are anything to go buy.

The grip doesn't change the spacing between the buttons & dials. And it's this landscape on my EM1X that makes it fit dang near perfectly to the size of my palm & finger length.

So as much as I'm loving my OM1 it just doesn't fit like the EM1X & I don't think the grip I have coming is going to change that. The benefit will just be the extra battery life (I'm not getting the battery life other OM1 owners are reporting). Is that worth the extra money? I'm not going to answer that :)

Still waiting for the free battery and hopefully it will come soon !

Battery life will be affected by the lens (the 150-400 and 300mm f4) probably draw the most power given their size and stabilization. Subject detection runs continuously and draws power, High EVF frame rate draws more power, Backlit LCD time and Sleep time will also affect battery life. I put subject detection on a front button to turn it on/off with a tap or change subject by turning the dial and put Backlit LCD time to 8 seconds.

But not the extra battery.

The grip certainly helps with the overall size & adds some balance to the 150-400. But as I thought, my natural finger placement doesn't match the fit that I enjoy with the EM1X. That being said, I'm sure that I will be able to get used to the new layout & it will be worth the effort. As I dial in more of the settings to my style the OM-1 is providing the improvements that I wanted.

I am thinking of replacing the E-M1x with the OM-1 and the HLD-10, as I do plenty of portrait shots using the joystick on the E-M1x. I am trying to figure out if I can also use the shutter button on the grip to operate the video in vertical mode.

Peter, do you know if the RRS E-M1iii plate fit the OM-1?

No it doesn't. The bases of the E-M1iii and OM-1 are significantly different (I have both). RRS are developing a new base for the OM-1 which you can pre order but there are no details or images of it yet.
