Are you interested in the A1 but unable so far to decide whether or not to buy one? Maybe it would help others in the same boat if you'd share your thoughts about:

1. What's holding you back?

2. What might lead you to decide to buy one?

3. What might lead you to decide finally not to buy one?

My answers:

1. Reports of "bad" cameras that have to be returned. Unpredictability. Need to run my own QC tests on the specific camera. Concern that I might miss a fault until it's too late.

2. An acknowledgement by Minolta of the problem and a fix for it. Possibly a convincing explanation by a reliable non-Minolta source that the Minolta has fixed the problem.

3. A new camera in the same category (prosumer non-DSLR) that seems clearly better and more quality-assured becomes available, probably from a different company.

With these questions you must have some NLP training!

Good grief! Bandler and Grinder strike again!

No, but not so far from it, I fear.

Agree! I've been trying to do my own clumsy QC right here at this forum (see http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1024&message=6595175 ), but even here I'm getting mixed results. Some people think this particular camera is fine, some find it a definite reject. My problem is that I'm not a very experienced or knowledgeable photographer but eager to learn--hence the interest in A1, which is a good cam for experimenting. All this has left me very insecure about my next moves...

One other problem is that here in the Netherlands, A1 prices range from €950 to €1250, and finding a shop that combines a decent price with the possibility to return a camera that's not good is very hard--actually, most shops I've been to just deny the problem...
2. An acknowledgement by Minolta of the problem and a fix for it.

that the Minolta has fixed the problem.
Exact! I don't demand perfection, and I'm willing to live with 'more noise than other cameras', but I want to know what I'm up to.

Minolta Germany has issued a long statement that basically explains what noise is and why it's there, and they sort of acknowledge that the A1 is 'average', but they link its noise profile to the fact that they use a special technique for reading the image off the sensor that is necessary for those 1/16000 exposure times. But they don't address the QC issues that make us nervous.

I almost bought a Sony 717 (@ €759), but it does not have rear sync flash, which I really really like... and the 828 is way too heavy for me...

Mostly Price and Return Options in the case I get a defective one.

If I buy here in Canada the price is $300-500 more than if I buy from the US. Whereas if I buy from the US, returning a defective unit becomes more difficult and costly.
2. What might lead you to decide to buy one?
Price Drop locally, or a "problem fix" from Minolta, be it a firmware upgrade or direct to manufacturer recall.
3. What might lead you to decide finally not to buy one?
Early release of Sony 828 (with good results and decent price), or high performance reviews for Oly 5060 (but I will likely hold off a bit and get the A1 regardless)

Yes, and I think even experienced and knowledgeable photographers are not necessarily quality control experts. As one who has formerly done software testing, I can say it takes a certain obsessive turn of mind that not everyone has -- thank goodness!

So it seems that for you, there's a certain tradeoff between quality control and price. Given a sufficiently low price, you'd be more willing to take chances.

I wouldn't exactly say that. There seems to be a concensus out there that there is a quality control issue with this camera, with that being the case I would like to be able to easily exchange a defective unit if need be. That would be easy enough if I bought locally.

However, I believe that Canadian retailers are gouging the consumer in the area of digital cameras (and likely many other areas) due to a lack of competitiion. Even the prices on "older" cameras are very slow to come down. For example, you would be hard pressed to find the Canon G3 in Canada for less than $899 ($680 US) whereas most retailers in the US are priced below $500US, same goes with the Fuji 602Z, still retailing in Canada for close to $1000 or more CDN, while in the US it retails for around $300 less.

So, back to what you said

"Given a sufficiently low price, you'd be more willing to take chances."

Really, I'm ready to pay the going price for this camera from the US, I just would like a better option in the case I have to return it (preferably local retailers to step up and stop ripping us off). But I doubt that will happen, so I will wait a bit and see if problems get resolved or if I can get a competitive price up here. Either way, by Christmas I will very likely have purchased this camera (unfortunatley I'm sure it won't be from somebody local).

Don't know if that cleared anything up, or just comes off as rambling rant.
But, anyway, take it easy.

Maybe all of us potential buyers who are not buying at the moment (for very similar reasons!) should approach Minolta about the noise noise:

Dear Konica Minolta,

What's up with the A1 and how can we make sure we get a good one and don't tell us nothing's wrong, cause that means we'll be looking elsewhere...

Yours sincerely,

Me
You
Lots of other people...

Yes, that might work, if one could get enough names together and draft a letter that expressed the consensus of concerns.

However, I wouldn't want to pitch my concern exclusively toward noise. I know that's one of the issues some people have raised, but it isn't the only one I've read. In fact, I'm reluctant to even use the word in this thread or elsewhere any more for fear of bringing down the there's-no-noise cops. :)

I have enough confidence after testing four cameras locally that I odered mine through mail order yesyerday to save money. I don't beieve there is any major quality control issues with this camera, as least not any more than any other prosumer camera.

Morepix, you continue to rag on the A1, but you haven't even tested one (let alone own one), AFAIK. This thread is nothing but more bitc*n, complaining, and fretting getting repeated again and again by you. The only people likely to post to this thread are going to be doing just that. What your not busy enough doing the same on the other threads your involved in? I'm beginning to question your motivation...

OK

Some evidences about the A1 issues: look at these and tell me (I can't answer the question myself, really) if you see any noise in there

Now, all this hesitation brings some conclusions to me:
  • apparently, we French consumers seem to be protected enough by laws not to worry too much about QC issues or initial defaults on new cameras. All electronic equipment here, including kitchen appliances and everything that works with electricity either AC or DC, is covered with a legal warranty of 2 (two) years;
  • all remote sales (ie internet, phone, mail) are covered by a very ancient law (1970s) that give us a 7 day delay to retract;
  • a whole set of laws protects us against "hidden vice" in the product provided to the customer (too long to detail) with even the possibility to void the sale on customer request (not only item replacement).
Now you can say that's why USA is performing more than France but... it's nice for consumers ;-)

Finally, for those interested, prices for the A1 here come down $10 a week maybe because the change rate between euro and USD is close to one.

What would be the best way to find out if a specific camera is OK when you're holding one in your hands in a store?

Olivier ... Thanks for letting us hear from you. You seem to be feeling secure about being able to get rid of a faulty item. To some extent we have at least short-term protection and product return possibility here in the States too. I still question how much testing we should have to do and what risk we should have to run on a new item that we pay nearly 1000 Euros for (or is it more?).

Anyway, it seems you've answered the question for yourself and have a camera you're happy with. Nice looking photos.
