Hi All

Is anyone else noticing a drop in DDR5 memory?

I'm wanting to built a new workstation. Several months ago I listed the component parts on CamelCamel (CPU, graphics card, MB, ram, case, monitor, etc) in order to track prices and get the best deal. I have now noticed the pricing on DD5 Ram as come down a lot since last year.

For example: Crucial RAM 64GB Kit (2x32GB) DDR5 4800MHzhas dropped from $1300 Dec 2021 to $567 today (March 2022). That seems like a big drop.

But DDR4 is less than half the cost and has the same real word performance as DDR5. I would wait till next year on DDR5.

I'm not very knowledgeable in this area, but heard that DDR5 saves power. Furthermore, isn't it strongly recommended for 12th generation Intel?

Samsung: twice as fast, with 13% power savings

But DDR4 is less than half the cost and has the same real word performance as DDR5. I would wait till next year on DDR5.

This popular reviewer showed no significant performance difference with DDR5 for most applications.


For some, it just feels bad buying new parts that are the latest and greatest. In the case of DDR5, the new tech offers little for a premium price increase. I bought an LGA1700 DDR4 board as an upgrade this year with the idea of swapping to a DDR5 board when prices and performance justify the update.
 
Power savings? Like what, 0.5w per module?

Just buy DDR4, turn of the led lighting and voila, DDR5 power consumption.

Also, if power consumption is a concern, it would be better manifested in the cpu and gpu area. My gpu needs 30w to run, OP's probably needs 7X more.

Even getting a gold certified PSU means better efficiency than simply buying DDR5 or even DDR4.
 
Wow, thank you all for your feedback. You all have given me several things to consider (DDR4 vs DDR5).

My first (uniformed) thought was to use the latest parts which means DDR5; however, if the benefits are not really there relative to my needs my needs that is something to consider.

I often do work big. My large format work tends to be 38 x 48 inches and complex (see image below) with many many PS layers and groups. That means files sizes can get as big as 25 GB. Because of that I'm looking for a certain level of fire power so processing does not get bogged down.

the initial pricing was apparently driven by supply constraints for a subcomponent, more so than the usual initial excess price for the next gen when the fabs are still focused on the prior.

For nearly the same pricing, DDR5 would be the clear choice. DDR4 sticks will soon have limited value for new systems. And the performance, esp on AMD, should matter.

If the deltas are still large, and if I didn't like the idea of Win 11 yet, then maybe saving a lot on the intel 11, or the Ryzen 5xxx is the better value play right now. But the Zen4 release (or at least announcement) is coming this spring and may put some downward pressure on some of the pricing. Intel has been aggressive in pricing the 12s to reclaim share right now.

As is often the case, you may just have to take a line in the sand - what do options cost today, and pick one.

They didn't give the specs until about 16 minutes in. DDR5 5200, 38-38-38. I believe that the DDR4 was 3200, slightly tweaked to 14 latency. (I find it awkward to recheck, in a YouTube video.)

A non-YouTube review: PC Mag suggest that it is indeed a bit pointless to get DDR5 at a premium now. There is faster DDR5 with lower latency than what they tested, but I would expect drastic differences.

On the other hand, after paying ridiculous prices for a high-end graphics card, what wrong with wasting a few hundred more on DDR5? ;-)

I bought some DDR5, but I still hope for price and latency drops in time.

Probably all true. Unlike the OP, I would get a Max-Q design GPU, but that's another thread.

However isn't DDR5 being recommended for 12th gen Intel? Aside from future compatibility of the motherboard, performance is improved.

In the chart you reproduced, the gain with DDR5 6200 over DDR4 3200 is less than 6%.

That could figure into a price/performance calculation.

I can't speak to compatibility.

Hi CAcreeks OP here .. actually my new build will contained as much fire power as appropriate which Includes the gpu.

My goal to the handle large format, complex visual work (see image above) without needing a hardware upgrade (gpu, memory, cpu) for three years. I built my current 2017 workstation with top line stuff, at the time. It's now bogging down especially when using pluggins.. eerr!!

My original question was more limited regarding the price and memory. For that, I got a lot of good feedback Thanks!

Yes, it sounds like you already have a 3080 Ti board.

Furthermore it seems like Nvidia has discontinued Max-Q in new products.
