Don't even get me started on the Mark I, Mark II, and Mark III...... (although, I assume they will continue that practice so they can introduce an OM-5, and OM-10 along with a second generation OM-1.
Huge disadvantage of the OM-1:
IT WAS A SLR RELEASED BY OLYMPUS IN 1972.

Impressively dumb.
I disagree with you and agree with the OP. Even before I knew the specs, saw the sample photos, watched the announcements, etc. I thought it was a smart decision.
For years I thought the EM1 should have been called the OM1. The E really meant nothing to me (and no I did not think it worked as a successor to DSLR E series). After nearly 50yrs it's ok to reuse a name. My original OM1 I used for my first photography class was a great camera and I really enjoyed using it. I have no doubt most who owned it could say the same. What a great way for OM Systems to pay homage to a great camera from so long ago and to usher in a new generation of cameras to come.
As for things like google searches and what not, there's no issue with reusing the name. On the first page of a search, 4 of the top 7 were info about the new OM-1 (and that will continue to grow); same went for an image search - new OM1 was all over the page. No one is going to mistake the two.
And thus you will no longer find information about the original OM-1. It is stupid, and shows a lack of originality.
Wrong again. If you type OM-1 you get both, if you put in OM Systems OM-1 you get the new camera, if you put in Olympus OM-1 75% the results are the film camera, if you put in ‘film’ or ‘35mm’, all you get is the film camera - this isn’t rocket science.
The new branding is OM systems, OM in the model name makes perfect sense. The shape of the camera is the same as the 1 series without an ‘x’ designation. It makes total sense to have a 1 in the model name. Now calling it the mark IV would make no sense since the new company hasn’t put out 3 prior models. Calling something else entirely doesn’t tie it back to the brand.
As for lack of originality, who the **** cares? Like calling it the OM Systems B1 or J2000 or some other letter number combo is soooooo much more original (roll eyes). No one thinks the R series numbers are original, no one thinks the Z, X, GH, K, M series are original. In fact the smart thing OM Systems did was keep the series like the previous one, so they can have easy to understand products lines: 1 series = High End, 5 series = Mid, 10 series = Budget Consumer.
But please tells us what letter number combinations you would have used instead of OM-1? Let’s see what you come up with.
