Greetings, all.

After using my iPhone exclusively to take pictures now for years, someone dropped an Canon EOS T3i on my lap, a few kit lenses, all ready to go. I've been cramming YT vids to learn the camera functions. (The tutorials are fine except I don't need fundamentals, only the camera tech stuff.)

I'll probably end up working with editing software soon, but in the meantime was wondering if anyone has tried migrating the files to the iPhone for editing. I don't think the iPhone can handle RAW data (?), but I've found the pictures taken with the phone can be beautifully enhanced. The phone capabilities area amazing. I did see lightning corded SD readers are available to do the transfer.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? Thanks, much...

My biggest concern with using your phone would be storage. How much space do you have on your phone and how big are your picture files? If you use something like lightroom, you can download the mobile version, but I think it's more geared towards editing photos from your iphone. You can edit jpegs that are transferred, but I'm not sure about raw files. If you really want to use your camera to its fullest, I'd plan on editing your raw files on your computer using whichever software you end up deciding on. In the meantime, if you want to edit on your phone, you'll likely have to be selective with which photos you edit depending on your storage space.

Although iPhone screens are rather small for doing photo editing, some iPhone apps can work with Raw files.

iMore – Best apps for editing Raw files on iPhone and iPad in 2022

Raw support may come from Apple's system-level libraries, or from third-party code. The Canon Rebel T3i is on the lists for the most recent versions of the iPhone OS, and the list for Adobe's applications (including, presumably, the mobile version of Lightroom).

Apple Support – Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey

Apple Support – Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and macOS Big Sur

Adobe – Cameras supported by Camera Raw

Thank you for the comments/information and sources. Storage is an issue currently, but I plan on updating the phone soon, along with storage capacity.

The sources will be interesting to unravel and comprehend. The suggestion to advance to working with RAW data on the computer is the conventional wisdom, for sure, don't have any experience with that yet.

While back I did try experimenting with Gimp, but when Apple updated the editing software, haven't been able to let go of the spontaneity, ease, convenience and capabilities. I'm sure if I were a pro, would be a different story.

With Android tablet and phone, I've gotten used to using the Google software to edit on the small screens. I can download directly from the SD card using a thumb drive card reader and it can automatically upload to the cloud, so it's available everywhere, so I don't have to worry about the card being full.

I can edit images taken with the camera using the phone, if that's what you're asking.

Just tried it myself with an image I emailed to my account on the iPhone, saved it and went from there. It worked, but it doesn't look much different from just using the iPhone to take the pic in the first place.

I migrate from my Nikon D750 to Apple's I-photos (shooting JPEG) and use the basic editor on my Mac desktop or MacBook Air. So far I am pleased. My goal is to move to something more powerful like Lightroom as I get better. If you use I Cloud storage should not be an issue.

There are two I use, for Raw Snapseed. If you are just using JPEG then Lightroom Mobile does well.

Hope this helps,

David.

To migrate, next thing I tried was connecting the iPhone to the laptop and downloading the file to the phone from iCloud. The device was there but the download didn't work.

I can still just get a card reader to plug into the iPhone. Apple sells one for 30 bucks, I saw other versions for half that.
