Would you ever buy or look for another camera after buying Z9

Where would you stop? do you think Nikon will upgrade Z9 down the line? if so would you upgrade to Z9ii for example
put the Z9's main grip into a body and the wonky vertical/horizontal tilt even in portrait mode and you sold me big time lol. [also i wish 2x CFe in compact cameras lol]. spec wise it will be hard for me to buy more than a Z9. it's ridiculously overkill for me, i bought it mainly for the video features [no crop all video format/frame/resolution] and the lag free evf. not really so much for the autofocus since i found z6ii autofocus pretty good already for most uses. but of course it's a bonus for me but not a necessity to upgrade due to "AF".

i find z7 grip too tiny and z6ii too tiny now. the 2x cfe made a substantial difference in making the grip feel perfect now and one of the best.

Couldn’t help but wonder if people are still using the first iPhone because it was pathbreaking. Are they?
Still have mine but don’t use it LOL…

Cameras are getting almost perfect.

I just got my Z9.

But if I'll upgrade to a Z9 II, I'd like it to be lighter. Some EVF improvements like 120hz would be welcome. But other than that, I doubt I'll need more MP or faster burst speeds anymore.

Doesn’t matter what they do to the Z9ii, I am only replacing my Z9 after I wear it out in the next 4-5 years. Now am I going to replace it with the Z9iii? Maybe, but I’ll see what will happen to the Z6iv and the Z7iv and how much performance I’m giving up.

If I can get away with spending less money, I will.

I am sure, if they improved on the Z9, I would look. But as for another camera sure, I still use the Z6II and Z7II for more than the Z9 and have some cinema cameras along with M43 cameras and lenses. So any camera that can improve on their shortcomings or a way I can switch to a Nikon Z mount, to reduce systems, I would. I would make use of a 60mp plus body. I'd add a Z9 without the grip, log, or raw video and limited to 10FPS. I'd take a smaller lighter rangefinder style FX body.

Any of these improvements, added the Z6/7III alone would be enough to for me to get them. No viewfinder blackout, 8K, 4K120, oversampled 4k on the Z7, dual CF express, proper external grip that takes the EN-EL18 and doesn't remove the built in battery, menus and setup options from the Z9, proper wi-fi or even a WR-10.

Wonderful as the Z9 is, it will be the camera I use the least, because of its size, and cancelling my pre-order is still an open question.

I was taught that driving stick was the cat’s meow, now the cool people drive Teslas.

I am only slowly getting to know the iPhone camera, but it shoots underwater, has internal storage, has vastly better connectivity, and is more advanced in AI and computational photography, and has a better screen, and no doubt more features lacking in the Z9 that I haven’t explored.

Slowly, but surely, people who think different are continuously obsoleting what we think cameras, and everything else, must be.

This is a question asked after every great new camera launches. Its hard to imagine things better, yet somehow, things always get better.
This thread and some behind the scenes correspondence with the OP convinced me the Z9 is a body I'd love to have. It would be a step up, I believe, if only for the fact that it combines a pro body with a high mp body. Considering the images in that thread with quality f mount Nikon exotic prime and input from the OP, I'm satisfied that 1. exotic prime f mounts are not hampered by using them on a Z9 and 2. The talk of initial acquisition lag is not an issue.

So considering I have an exceptional 300 2.8VR, 200-400VRII and a near exceptional 500f4VR, remaining with Nikon instead of exploring an Alpha 1 (now or in the future) makes financial sense.

But you can be assured a Z9ii or Alpha 1ii will be even better. But like the D850 and D5, and now with the Z9, there will be plenty of people "dropping off" due to achieving "good enough"
The same question was being asked about the D850. Look how much has changed.
I don't believe that has changed. IMO, nothing in a non-pro high mp body touches a D850. Z7iii probably will, but there's no Z7iii. Putting it up against a full on pro body (such as Alpha 1 or Z9) is not a valid comparison. It never was. No one really thought a D750 should equate to a D5.

When the new camera has something to offer that I need or want for the right price. The Z9 offered the features I wanted for the right price.

I don't consider the Z9 to be an upgrade as it's too big. So I won't want its replacement either. To me, part of the beauty of mirrorless is smaller bodies. Z7 vs D850 for example.

I'll possibly be up for a Z7 III or whatever they call it.....

It's smaller and lighter than a D6

Yep and I never wanted one of those either. I consider a D850 to be too big, let alone anything larger. The Z6II and Z7II do all I want, why would I want something bigger and massively heavier?

I am 100% sure I will. In fact, I am already looking forward to the rumored Canon R1, I am multiple system user and always prefer the Canon 1 Series body over the Nikon D5 body, so Z9 for sure will not be my last camera, not even the last camera for next few year for sure.

I can already see i will replace my A7R IV with a Z8 or whatever they may call it, a small 60MP landscape camera. but again, I am not sitting there dreaming and waiting for the next best thing, I will keep on buying and using what is available in the market now and upgrade as new products becomes available.
I’m a multi-system user as well and now trying the Z9 even though I own a Sony Alph 1. As far as replacing my A7R7 IV the last thing I want is a higher Mpixel follow on like I think the A7R V might target. Upgraded from the A7R III to the IV for the AF improvement and gen 4 body improvements more than the resolution increase.
Very interested to see what comes down the pike next.

yeah I know you shoot multiple systems, it's always the next best thing, competition is great for us consumers.

I’ve taken the plunge to try the Z9 and while smaller would be nice I’ve been using battery grips on my Sony and Canon cameras for a long time. That said one of the nice thing that Sony is doing is pushing down there advanced technology into other Cameras like the A7 IV with its AF system and processors. If I see Nikon do the same with a Z7III or Z6III then I might buy one to pair with Z9. It will be a wait and see at this point.

Trying to see where everyone ends up in the 45-50 Mpixel tier. At 20 FPS with 14-bit lossless compressed RAW i personally can live without 30 FPS so the Sony A1 and Nikon Z9 and maybe someday a Canon R5 II will be the candidates. Sure higher megapixels can be fun but at that point I would tend to let it be a camera for landscapes or architecture only because I don’t do any real studio shooting. I am also still interested in lower resolution if real ISO benefits can be seen to reduce noise.

You clearly don't, your preference isn't everyones, bigger heavier cameras have some advantages, balance, battery life, controls, vertical grip, durability, heat dissipation etc. You said it wasn't an upgrade, because it was not smaller in the same way as the Z7ii was smaller than the D850. I was only pointing out that it was smaller than the closest F mount and the most obvious upgrade contender.

No - but that’s because I’m not buying a Z9

Sooner or later they will do for sure. They've always did. I see not reason to think that this will change. Of course we do not know 100%.

Agree something will be done but the details of what and when make the difference.

If you do get the Z9 I would be interested in your review of it. Can you rent one for a weekend first?

Arguably the D850 is still the best Nikon DSLR ever made.....for some. But that isn't the point. The point is when it came out it was hard for us to imagine anything better. For the DSLR side, since Nikon is out of that game, its status will remain for some, but many have ditched their 850s for later offerings. To them, they found something better.
