I'm just wondering if I need to post some in order to get critiques on my photos...funny how posts with "naked girls" in the title get the most replies...

be it they are bad photos or good, flattering or not...tons of feedback..i mainly post band photos (and a huge thank you to those of you that reply and give me feedback) but for the most part I don't get a lot of feedback and it's just frustrating...

What's a girl to do? Add a photo of myself from the one and only Sports Illustrated shot i did when i was 18

might contribute to this. As I'm relatively new to photography and most have forgotten more then I'll ever know I don't know that I'd ever be "qualified" to comment on your images because I don't know what the meanings behind them are or what constitutes a good or bad photo of a band.

I can say that you probably have the toughest lighting situations of any one posting here and I wouldn't even know how to set the White Balance to shoot a band like you do.

As long as your clients are happy, keep on firing away!

Kind Regards,

David Anderson

Hi photoboothGrl

You can shock by:
1.location;
2.clothes
3.attitude
4.composition and postprocessing
5. a combination of the above.

Shooting a band means knowing them (as a friend) finding a common thinking and interest. If your photos will be more than simple images documenting their albums will sell better. Thats a common interest, for this your images (with their accept of course) should tease, shock, yell, stop the audience, made the audience interested (who the f are these??)
I hope this little conceptual brainstorming will help.

Funny how many people replied and how quickly too! Your band stuff looks pretty good. I wouldnt use a flash to do them though, and if you do dont put people too close to a wall to there is a shadow that makes it look snapshotty. Try to use available light, even at nite, just do really long exposures or something. Live stuff same thing, Ive see band stuff posted here that looks pretty good, mostly because its available light w/o flash. But ya, naked girls are a little more exciting then a bunch of guys staring blankly into the camera, but that is the way MOST band promo shots are done these days...

  1. 1 is ok, the sepia one is the best, but you really really need to work on your lighting. To me these come out as very amateur snap shots. As someone else said, available lighting would work well for these types of shots. Choose your backgrounds more carefully. I’m wondering, did the band choose the locations, or did you? Of course, if the band is happy, that is what is important, but I don’t think these photos will help sell the band at all. Just my 2 cents.

I like you (I think) am a huge indie-rock fan... My favorite bands are those such as Ranier Maria, Subrosa, etc... My personal opinion is that the best band photos are candid and unpretentious. Get the band drunk so they forget the camera is around. Hang out with them at a diner, on the road, in the green room, when they are practicing etc. Pop photos when they are busy doing things besides posing for shots.

Of course if those guys are death metal then maybe they need to concentrate on trying to look evil. I don't know. This is just my opinion. Your pretty lucky because you seem to be doing something that you love. Just have fun.

ok this is what i need to hear...

they did pick the location, we started in their basement and ended up in a "haunted" warehouse

so in terms of available lighting...you also do not recommend flash..

the lens i was using: 24-70mm 2.8 ..which would you recommend? i want to improve the lighting...what would you recommend I do?

TIA

...I've noticed that very seldom do people do critiques, even when asked. something in us wants to be nice to nice people, and we think that by mouthing platitudes (oh that's such a lovely baby...) we're being nice, when in fact the nicest thing would be to jump in and brawl a bit. there've also been some incidents i remember (a year ago i can remember) where people were highly critical of everything about posted images, but who were completely unwilling to post anything of their own - so you had no idea if they were trolling. posts deteriorated quickly into nastiness. now we're back to nice-nice.

i go to a couple photography groups in my area to keep me thinking about my work (kind of like how AA requires you to attend their meetings...) and people don't seem to offer any useful criticism there, either. i've gotten whole rooms full of stunned looks just from saying "those two pictures engage me, but the other two while nice leave me cold, and here's why i think that's true for me." Or by asking "why are you choosing to shoot pictures of people without engaging with them." the other responses were completely vacant - "i really like how the bricks look" and "is that tri x or ilford." at the last meeting i put one horrifically crappy picture up with four really good ones (independent confirmation on the good ones, two were taken for publishing, and two were the best selling pix at my last art fair) and got the same kind of "nice colors" talk about all the images, even the crappy one. shrug.

I take workshops to get away from the bland blahs, and get the kind of critique that makes you get better. even there, many of the instructors focus on patting everyone on the head. the best i've had was jay maisel, who's not above beginning comments with "now that qualifies as the worst piece of cr&p image I've seen in the last ten minutes..." i advanced hugely in one weekend workshop with him. seth resnick is also completely unwilling to nice mouth an image unless he knows you're a complete beginner.

short of having some folks join the forum who don't care what they say, you may try to do what i've done; i've found a half-dozen people who i think are good, and who think i'm good, and we made a pact - no nice words just for nice words. we get together regularly and bash each others work around. sometimes feelings are hurt a bit, but we all understand that at some point it's a matter of artistic differences. and in person, its easier to read the genuine concern for each other and keep the criticism in perspective. at least we hear what other people really think.

Make pictures, don't take them - it leaves more for others.

We all know that sex sells (for both sexes), so of course a title like this draws attention (especially in a male-dominant forum). However, if the title and the content don't match, probably it works only once.

As for the issue, I think if you had shots in real concert with stage lighting you could play with all sorts of color casts and make very powerful images. This is an area that calls for wizardry in lighting.

If it is sort of studio shots, you need to light the background and create a seamless background (or blur it at least), eliminate shadows in the background and create nice contrast - otherwise complete candids, as someone said before - try to get the mood of the members, bring out their personality and uniqueness, facial expressions, funny gestures with members going silly (crazy) a bit would make them more appealing.

You need images that are either technically brilliant or very artistic or both.
I like you (I think) am a huge indie-rock fan... My favorite bands

:D

yeah, this board is funny that way.

i wrote this at one point because i have posted a few different photos on dpr to no or little reply:

once again, i'd like to post my 'tips for thread success', so that dud threads like this one don't happen to you...

1) title your post along these lines: "[synonym for dissappointed] with my [model of nikon dslr]"

2) the body of your post should be concise. follow this format: "my [model of nikon dslr] really [synonym for stinks]. it's not nearly as good as my old [model of consumer point and shoot]. i'm getting rid of it and buying a [model of canon dslr].

3) watch the posts roll in. many of these will be titled "troll {nt}", but there will always be folks actually taking the bait and: asking for samples w/ exif info; giving samples w/ exif info from [model of nikon dslr]; extolling the merits of [model of nikon dslr]; requesting info about workflow; explaining that [model of nikon dslr] takes time to learn.

4) reply sporadically by repeating step 2 with minor variations. mention lack of saturation, underexposure, and 'soft' images.

5) under no circumstances post pics before 100 posts.

6) post horrible pics w/ ridiculous settings in the exif that no one in their right mind would ever use. something along the lines of 1600ISO, f22, shutter speed of 1000, internal flash on manual, exposure comp of + - 4.

7) be sure to repeat the part about [model of consumer point and shoot] giving much better results.

8) voila, you are now a nikon slr talk forum superstar.
