Your motorsport shots 5

A crazy amount of power in a small boat. I wonder how it handles the torque? A bit like autocross. I can get lost.

Some wonderful images here, but I wonder if anybody shoots something more than super cars, long lens head ons or pans of road racing? Do any of you photograph oval racing, drag racing, off road competition, hot rods, muscle cars etc? And Im not speaking of snapshots of parking lot car shows.
i used to shoot fast sand rails and drag racing up thru nostalgia top fuel, using old film lenses on a pentax k10d and then a sony a7r.

Nice shot's. You appear to be in a privileged position very close to the action.

I was going through some old photos for an entrant the other day and thought, it's pretty quiet here, I'll post some photos from an event I haven't been to for a few years. These are from the Noosa Hillclimb in 2015, Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia. A great, winding, uphill all the way hillclimb track which doubles as a scenic drive when not used as a race track.

With a bit of Escort love thrown in at the end :-)

These are just great. Never see then on tracks in America

First event for the 2022 season last Saturday.

A "Come and Try" for newbies to Hillclimbing and a "Test and Tune" in the afternoon for the regulars.

Here's a couple of open wheelers having a go.

The track looks like fun. I love the way they arranged the spectator benches in the perfect spot to watch the action at the turn.

…can pretty much see the whole track from that spectator spot. Gets decent crowd on competition days.

Ian,

Is there any jet boat racing close to us in Brissy?
Tweed Valley Jetsprint Club is the closest club and the track is at Cabarita, just south of the border. I think a new race calendar has been proposed for 2022. They have a website and FB page.

Ian,

looks like they have a meet next weekend, thinking of going out there.

Any tips on what lenses I'll need, I have a D500. Are you allowed close enough to get away with a 70-200 or will I need something longer?

I have shot Oly for about 12 years here and have used my 50-200 with and without 1.4 tele attached, so a 100-400mm up to 600mm (ff equiv) is ideal. A 70-200 is great when the boats are closest to you but a bit short when they head over the other side of the track. On APSC that’ll give you some extra reach but still probably not long enough for other side of track. If you have something longer take that as well. This will be my first meeting there with Sony gear. I will be using my 200-600 all day I figure.
You can be pretty close to the action down on the fence line in places, 10 to 15 metres at some of the corners. The fencing doesn’t obstruct your view. You will get wet. 😄

At road race tracks I find I enjoy photos taken between 40 and 150mm in the M43 system. Sometimes I use the 12-45, the 45, or 75f/1.8 to give my arms and shoulders a rest. There are some locations where I use a TC with the 40-150PRO or the 300 f/4 but not many. I've learned I can leave them home and still get all the photos I need at shorter FL. Makes me think I could use a FF system. I'm not doing that yet. It eliminates anything over 200mm because of size/weight. If I use f/5.6 lenses to save size/weight no benefit over what I have now for this use case.

I can shoot from the wall because I get photography event assignments. No worry about boat splashing, but here in Seattle, you get wet half the time no matter where you are because it's raining half the time. The weather sealing is nice.

Wet is good for motorsport it makes everything more interesting and helps you shoot at slower shutter speeds.

Thanks Ian.

I'll probably use two bodies then, D800 with the 70-200 for the close stuff and the D500 with 200-500 for the other side of the track.

Definitley makes shots look a bit more dynamic, but how does it help you to shoot at a lower shutter speed?

There is a lot less light. You can use slower shutter speeds without resorting to using ND filters and having to use slow F numbers. All at the same low iso settings.

Well, I got wet but not in a nice way.
😄 I was planning on heading there Saturday but had a few potential water issues myself at home. Drainage was just keeping up so stayed home just in case. Got 810mm of rain in six days, 233 mm on Sat. Faired reasonably well with only very minor water ingress through garage.

Watched live stream on YTube in between checking rain. I see they got some racing in until about 2pm, did you manage to get some decent photos. When they weather is better it’s a spectacular motorsport.
