Can I use a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD w Nikon Z6? If not, what are some good alternatives?

I have read a lot of reviews and I cannot get an answer on whether the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD will work on my Nikon Z6.

If this doesn't work, what other, more affordable options do I have at my disposal?
In short, I am looking for something affordable, that autofocuses (with the FTZ) and works with a Z series Full Frame camera (some tiny edge vignetting is ok).

I recently joined a local photo club so I want to experiment with this. Therefore, I do not need an expensive lens, just something to play around with and expand my toolbag.

Yes it will work but only in DX crop mode, leaving you with about 10MP resolution. You will have to use an FTZ adapter of course, as the Sigma is an F mount lens.

Used Nikon Z 24-70 f/4 lenses can be found rather inexpensively. $419 here:

You will pay almost as much for a used Sigma 17-50 and an FTZ. And the Z 24-70 is a better lens.

The Sigma 17-50 is a much better match for the Z50. You get the full resolution of the sensor.

Indeed. I had a 17-50 sigma for years on my canon DSLR. I now have a z6 and 24-70 f/4. In my opinion, the 24-70 f/4 is much better:

- 24-70 is lighter

- 17-50 tonnes of shots were ruined my lens flare shooting in to sun, I find 24-70 notably better

- 24mm is wider than 17mm (on my canon anyway at 1.6x).

- f4 is slower but bigger sensor mitigates this, equivalent. Except z6 high ISO performance is much better than my old DSLR also,

- my sigma used to move the external ring when focusing, the Z does not do that, and I feel the Z also focuses quicker.

- sigma was sharp, but less so in corners at 17mm. The 24-70 seems better in this regard I feel, although I did love the sigma so not a huge deal unless at 100%. The 24-70 is beautifully sharp I feel, really crisp.

- the 24-70 focuses super close

Hi,

My copy of Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM lens works fine in Dx mode on the Z6, but I don't use it anymore . The 24-70 S f4 kitlens is so much better and can be bought secondhand at a good price as others already mentioned.... Maybe you can use the sigma 17-50 with your nikon Df dslr ?

Or maybe buy a cheap prime lens like the Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 | Thom Hogan (zsystemuser.com) for your photo classes or go for the affordable Nikkor Z 28-75mm f/2.8 | Thom Hogan (zsystemuser.com) if you need f2.8 ?

If you want the best IQ the Z 50mm f1.8 S lens Nikon 50mm f/1.8 S Lens Review | Thom Hogan (zsystemuser.com) is an affordable option.

With FTZ :

For everyone's information, older 17-50 (we are talking those manufactured before release of Z mirrorless bodies) may require a free firmware update to be able to focus on Z bodies.

Mine did, and as usual it was performed for free by Sigma.

I just posted a response to a thread about compatibility with Z mount cameras. Sigma publishes a list about compatibility with various Nikon cameras. I had a 17-70 lens which it stated should never be used on a Z camera. I had issues with it on a D7100, D7200 and D500. Read the list. My 2 cents.

I have the Sigma you mentioned and the Z 24-70/4 S which is vastly superior in every way (other than F4).

The Sigma is a DX lens which you won't want to use on a Full Frame body, I mean you can buy why?

I use mine on the Z50, D80, and D7100. The AF is incredibly slow, slowest I've ever used, and hunts a lot on the Z50.

I'm not much of a fan of it but I just wanted a standard zoom for the crop bodies. The slow AF is biggest negative about it.
