G9 still worth it in 2022?

Hi I've been using M43 for a while now. For a planned trip to Africa I fort thought about getting the 100-300 Panasonic for wildlife photos.

Now I'm thinking about adding also a new body, but the G9 which should balance nicely with the super tele. The dust proofness is also nice for the desert.

My local shop offers a new body with the Leica kit zoom for 1500 or with the standard zoom for 1200 Euros. Would still consider this a worthwhile hardware even though the body is already 4 years old?

Which kit would you choose?

I would still bring my GX80 as a second body and give the GM1 to my 12 year old, since she's been asking for a "real camera" for the trip.

I will definitely go to the shop and try the body first hand as I once started with M43 because I disliked the large DSLR cameras.

Any thoughts are welcome.

The G9 was top of my M4/3 list until I decided on a Sony RX10. I thing it would an ideal travel and wildlife camera. For birding you could add the 100-400 later.

For me exactly the same!

Took me over 3 years to get the sony rx10m4. Now after a few months all of my apsc and FF and most of my m43 gear has gone. The 2.4-4.0 lens on the sony is incredibly nice. The AF is second to none (under 5k) for wildlife. Battery use is rather good.

Highly recommended!

Recently was £799 in UK unless you shoot small birds a very capable camera

I'm not a huge fan of the G9, but it's certainly a more capable camera than the GX80, especially when it comes to CAF. I'd say that it's still worth buying at current prices.

That said, unless birds in flight are a priority, I'd suggest considering a 100-400mm lens before upgrading the camera body. I was never happy with the quality of my 100-300mm at the long end of the lens. The 100-400mm is bigger and more expensive, but to me it was well worth it for the extra reach and quality.

Hi

i am not sure which lenses you currently have but i would recommend the g9 with the PL 50-200 mm if you do not need to specialize on small birds

This was a winning combination on all my wildlife days during my trip to Africa

I bought the kit with the Lumix for $1200 USD last year; I wanted light weight for travel. I bought a used 100-300 (edit: and a used 7-14) at the same store. Yes, the balance is excellent IMO, as the G9 has what's for me a very ergonomic grip.

I haven't gone traveling yet, I'm waiting for warmer weather to use it extensively. Still, this bird showed up at a nearby pond and posed nicely for me.

My only issue with this lens is that the corners get softer past about 250mm, but for the low price and light weight I'm happy to live with that minor concern.

Thank you!

I was just lucky the bird showed up on the near side of the pond, and was so intent on stalking its prey that it didn't fly away when I approached.

well sometimes a bit of luck is provoked by the photographers determination to get the right image

Might work even more as a square picture or a vertical shot ;-)

Better an E-M1.2, IMHO, for its PDAF. I bought one new last month for ab. 660 euros.

and yet this picture is barely in focus ;-)

There are many instances where contrast AF works perfectly for slow moving subjects

I personally would have ZERO interest in any camera with ONLY phase detect

Nice photo. I think Interceptor was referring to its use with the 100-300mm instead of the 100-400. 300mm is a little short for small birds.

I have shot the EM1MKII and lens aside if your focus was small birds I personally would get an olympus

otherwise the G9 is all around a better camera

I guess this lens is better than I thought it was
It's an excellent lens providing that you treat it well and don't use it to knock fence posts in.

The firmware updates from 2.0 onwards have been very nice and improved the camera a great deal.
