I’m looking to get a monitor to pair with a 14”MBP and want to use it for photo editing and viewing. I don’t know a lot about monitors so would like to know what you prefer and think is the thing to get!

I’m thinking 24 or 27 and 4 or 5k, but am really not sure which size or resolution is ideal. Or brands.

what monitor should I get?

How does that compare to Lg ultrafine? What features make it best? And, I think that’s a 4k 27”…what are your thoughts on using a 4k 27” with a mac? Ive seen some debates here that thats a bad idea for the mac because of scaling, retina etc, but am not sure what the consensus is

I just installed a LG UltraFine 5K Display 27 inch monitor to pair with a 14 inch MacBook Pro M1. The monitor is great. It plugs into the MAcBook and also powers the laptop. It is made to pair with the MacBook and is adjustable within the Mac OS. I also calibrated it with i1 Studio with no problem. The Price is 1295.99 on the Apple web site.

It is indeed that there is a lot of debate on whether a 4K monitor on a Mac works fine. I also do not know that, but can confirm that any EIZO from their CS and CG series are the best ones in the industry. I am using the CG 2420. Should you not wish to use a 4K monitor, the EIZO CS2731 will do great. And is within your budget.

My desk is 26" wide. I have a couple of hard drives behind the monitor stand and my laptop in front of it and my Wacom tablet to the right of the computer. It works for me. LG includes an attachment that goes on the back of the monitor replacing the monitor stand so you can attach it to the wall. I live in a very old house and I try no to attach anything to my horsehide plaster walls, but LG makes it easy to use a wall hung set up.

Easy, EIZO ColorEdge, I have tried most brands and nothing comes close to EIZO.

I use the EIZO ColorEdge CG2730...

It is nice to have something thar is made for it.

what sized desk do you have it set up on? Can you mount it on a monitor arm?

i’ve got a 60x30 desk I want to use it with but cardboard models I made have got me thinking a 27” might be big for the desk. Seems like there is no 4.5k 24” lg tho
I use a slightly scooped 26"x 72" UpDesk. With an extra 4" in the center of your desk, as long as you can place the display at an acceptable viewing distance from where you sit it should be fine.

As far as display options, NEC has a wide range of models, some of which are comparable to what Eizo offers. The NEC SpectraView software is excellent and there are certain display features that are unique to NEC. I have been using an NEC display since 2012 and it is still working so well for my needs that I cannot justify spending money on a newer model.

Higher-end Eizo and NEC displays are workhorses that can be used for many years, one reason that the price of some of the more costly models can be justified when compared against less expensive displays.

Personally, if I was in the market for a quality display, I would carefully compare Eizo and NEC before making a final decision. FYI, a forum search will turn up numerous threads with many details about NEC and Eizo displays.

Full AdobeRGB coverage, hardware calibration, incredible panel (uniformity),,...

No issue at all on my Mac.

There is no comparison, Eizo's are top quality pro grade monitors, LG's are consumer grade and nothing special.

If you have the funds get an Eizo you will not be disappointed.

The 27" 5K LG and 24" 4K LG are special in terms of having high resolution that is well-matched to their size. There's not much competition in that area except for the built-in iMac screens.

But as far as color accuracy and calibration features, you're right. That's an area where the high-end NEC and Eizo monitors rule.
If you have the funds get an Eizo you will not be disappointed.

Ok have one stellar recommendation for you. Are you based in USA? Hopefully this is still available there.

Huawei MateView 28.2 inch. It is the perfect aspect ratio for image editing. 3:2, is thin, stylish, has 100% sRGB, 98% P3 and 90 adobe rgb… and with 500 nits brightness and HDR capability it is extremely solid value for the money.

TL;DR - For most folks looking for quality at relatively modest cost, I recommend an NEC 24" EA245WMI-BK-SV ($699) or 27" EA271Q-BK-SV ($879).

This subject has been done to death, so I'm not going to write, once again, a long explanation. 4K is OK for 24", and 5K is OK for 27", but 4K on 27" will force you to change display resolution depending on whether you're doing photo work or everyday text-based work. I have used both wide-gamut and sRGB NEC displays over the past 15 years as a professional photographer, and I can't say that wide-gamut has ever made a difference for me. Most important is NEC's excellent color accuracy and evenness of illumination. NEC's Spectraview is the best color calibration kit I've ever encountered.

Questions welcome.
