Patiently waiting for Z6II firmware upgrade. That is all.

This is the page to refresh each day

Someone without any info to back it up suggested the week after the Z9 update, which would put the II series firmware on or around the 13th Jan. But don't quote me on it, it was buried in one of the comments on Nikon Rumours.

I think the II firmware is more complex as it has parallel CPU's and I think this means the firmware has to be written in a specific way in order to maximise their use. I could be wrong but it does seem plausible.

Nope.

What are wanting in the firmware upgrade? Better AF tracking?

--

All I want for New Year is
a 200-600 and a firmware upgrade
a 200-600 and a firmware upgrade
a 200-600 and a firmware upgrade 🎶

Doesn't really scan.. 😑

Obsess much.

AF tracking would be nice - but faster acquisition and more reliable focus acquisition would be wonderful. I’m an event photographer and I’ve been saying for a long time - the Canon and Sony AF acquisition and reliability for my style of shooting is faster.

I also have some random bugs in my Z6II - my play button sometimes is frozen and i need to restart the camera to get it to work, i have random lockups, etc.

So, in general I’d like to see some AF improvements and system stability fixes.

You’re very unlikely going to see them better performance because we’re going to need the hardware to, in particular the new processor and the stacked sensor.

The readout speeds of the stacked sensor has a role to play. The better processor also could mean better clock speeds and instructions per cycle. It could also be architecturally more efficient than the older processor.

I want them to rethink their user interface. There are too many half-way elements to their design.

Won't happen. There's the Nikon way, and the highway.

I wish there's a special firmware that lets the user remove video, retouch menu, intervalometer, and all the junk they don't need from the camera to fit their purpose. I'd probably be left with 4 items on the menu.

I too was waiting for a Z7ll upgrade until I sold it last week. Now I am waiting for a Z9 and suffering from sellers remorse.

Is anyone else checking this site and Nikon Rumors daily for a firmware announcement?
I have been thinking and waiting for long time to buy Z7II if they upgrade fimrware and I am sure they will do it at some point. They did for Z7 and they do it for Z7II just maybe they don\t want to kill the hype of Z9 now. I highly think they do it end of January when more people got Z9...
But I do the same photography as you. The thing here is that even if they upgrade firmware it is not going to be in sony and canon level.... stacked sensor is one thing which makes if fast to read but also machine learning algorithms require specific implementation on processor which can be very very demanding. The old Nikon processors no matter how goo they were on dslr, cannot do the same for mirror less even if they put two Expeed 6 of D6 in body of Z6II. those processors are not designed to scan the whole sensor to calculate the focus, they are designed for much smaller area of sensor in dslr system.
Sony implements same ML algorithms in A7IV as in A1 or A7s3. they all I think use same processors. Still A1 wins because of stacked sensor but others do a good job cause they have right processor. And when you change processor they whole way of reading data, cooling system and internal architect should change. My point is don't make high expectations. I have ordered Z9 but to be honest I have been tempted a lot when I checked sony and canon Af system.

It is exceedingly rare for Nikon to do a firmware change for anything other than critical bugs affecting the operation and use of the camera. The D850 started shipping in 2017 and 4 years later nothing has been done to improve the operation of the camera in any regard.

I had hopes that Nikon would fix the issue with the Small RAW and Medium RAW files created but this has not been done. Hoped that the autofocus would be refined further but this was not done.

Usually within 90 days a bug fix patch update is done for the camera and after that the customer is on their own.

That’s what I’m hoping for in 2022. But I don’t check every day for it and certainly will not go to the rumor page looking for accurate info.

The Z6 had the Expeed 6 before the D6. The D6, like other DSLRs has a separate autofocus sensor. Apples and oranges to compare even though they share the same processor. The implementation is vastly different. The Z6/Z7 have dramatically improved since their release with firmware updates. There's definitely room for further improvements for the dual Expeed setup.
As I said, I am sure they will improve it. They still are improving first generation of Z6/Z7 after 3 years so they will do it for Z6II. But the limitations of current architecture are something we should understand. Even if they can utilise more cpu for better AF, it can kill the battery usage as processors are not optimised for ML deployment. My only point is that it is not as easy as just rewriting FW and suddenly Z6 II autofocus jumps to canon, sony (something that many expect to see from Nikon including myself but that may not happen with current generation)
