TG-6 or wait for TG-7? Any recent news/speculation there?

RetCapt: Agreed 100% : In your conditions and the way you use your camera, you can certainly expect way more than 2 y of use out of the Tough cams. Agreed also, "they all fail within 2 years" is an unsupported generalization. Although it is close to being true in my case without extra protection (intense use in salt water environments), they are not ALL going to fail within 2 years regardless of the environment and usage.

My TG5 sustained a couple of high falls on hard surfaces. I was surprise of its resilience.

On my TG6, I have added the Olympus lens protector and a screen protector. But I don't ever immerse it in salt water any more since I have the waterproof case. I hope to keep this unit for more than 2 years.

Happy fishing, cheers !

FYI. I bought this screen protector . One of the best I've ever used.
I’ve also this one, and basically the same ones from the same company cut differently for my other bodies. After you apply them three times, you’ll get the hang out of it (I’m stupid, so maybe you’ll get it earlier). Then they will be always perfect on your camera. I don’t like the feel of screen protectors on my phones or tablets, but I find them essential on camera bodies which usually will get used in much tougher conditions. The nice thing about this screen protector is its cut. It’s slightly curved at one side like the screen frame on the body. This is a really nice touch.

I’ve also the Olympus LB-T01 Lens Barrier which is basically a must have. This thing is such a rip-off! Olympus should be really ashamed. Unfortunately it’s hard to find cheaper 3rd party barriers.

For slightly rougher use cases you have to calculate this expensive piece of plastic into the overall cost of the camera body. This is slightly similar to the relatively expensive optional EFV’s on other cameras. I don’t know what to think about such pricing.

Same here. I got the same pack on Jul. 25, 2021. Very good fit, adhesion, transparency and scratches protection.

But forget about impact protection. I went through 2 of the 3 screen protectors in the package already. Although, the cracks on the 2nd one are not critical. So I leave it on.

0.3 mm thickness is never going to offer much impact resistance anyway. So I am still happy with these protectors, but wouldn't mind if they were at least twice thicker and maybe not as brittle.

I have a second hand TG-4, my wife has a TG-6, both used for sea kayaking , the spend a lot of time underwater without any I’ll effect (so far). The TG-6 has noticibly better dynamic range due to its less greedy pixel count. I would get a TG-7 if dynamic range could be improved further, and in particular if the mode dial is stiffer so it has less chance of being changed accidentally

I've kept a close eye on possible TG-7 rumors, and so for there is no evidence that a TG-7 release is imminent or will happen at all. I wish it were true. Previously, OMDS had indicated that will continue development on the Tough line following the TG-6, but they missed their two year release cycle last year which was a bad sign. It is possible OMDS has financial problems and decided to axe the TG line (which would be a mistake).

We might get a clue as to whether a TG-7 will be released at the CP show on Feb 24th. Indications are OMDS will make an announcement there. The focus will likely be on their "Wow" camera, but a TG announcement is possible.

The chip shortage has caused chaos in the industry, but OMDS says they don't expect that to delay the releases of their new products:

‘We are facing some limited product shortages which are not unique to us – for various reasons (high demand on key lines, Covid, assorted supply chain glitches) but we do not foresee any delays in our launch plan for new products based on current info.’

Does anyone know how long after a new product announcement it actually takes to hit the retailers (or become available online?). I am "this close" to buying the TG6 locally but just wondering if I should wait and see if Olympus releases the TG7 before my trip this summer.

In previous years you figured a March/April announcement and June/July release. But OMDS is in flux because of the corporate spin off, so who knows. My guess is that there is only a 20% chance there will be a TG-7 this year and in all likelihood we're stuck with the TG-6 for 2022. CP+ show is in 8 days...hopefully we get a definitive comment one way or another then if the TG-7 will be released for 2022.

So is the CP+ show still taking place but online only? Anyone know where's the best place to monitor news? Really hoping to get some insight in the next few days as to the future of the Tough line of cameras.

Om Digital Solutions is featuring their main company presenters on Thursday. https://www.cpplus.jp/program/?hl=en > Thursday. Typically these presentations and subsequent interviews reveal something about their upcoming plans and it is likely some clue as to whether a TG-7 is on the horizon or not will be revealed.

43rumors.com will likely have a translated interview up by Friday...I think that is the day we'll know anything. I'm worried though...and if I had to bet I don't think we'll see a TG-7 in 2022.

So what's the verdict?

I heard nothing on another Tough. I suspect it will not be released this year.

But it is possible. OM Systems says they are planning multiple product releases this year and in the past they have released new cameras with little to no fanfare.

Any recent news on a TG7? Im lusting after a tg6 but would hate to buy one and have a tg7 released a few months later!

I bit the bullet and upgraded from my TG-4 to a TG-6. I’m very pleased with the improvements in image quality and functionality, pleased I didn’t hold off hoping a TG/7 would come along

I think it’s not going to come out this summer.

Because of the short of chip, OM System will focus more on OMD series and Pen series.

TG-6 has released for 3 years. Definitely not worth to buy.

I've been considering a TG-6 for awhile but looking at the prior announce dates for the TG-5 (April 2017) and TG-6 (May 2019) as well as the speculation earlier this year it feels like we're overdue for the TG-7.

Is anyone else in this boat of wanting to buy but not wanting to just barely miss the new model? Any insights into timing?

Thanks!
If you hold your breath for the TG7, you may be out of breath soon. The TG6 is a fine camera - I say get it and be happy now. OK, now breathe out...1,2,3.

Peace.

John

OMDS is rumored to be announcing a new camera in July. https://www.43rumors.com/ft3-om-digital-will-announce-a-new-camera-in-july/#disqus_thread This could finally be the TG-7. I suspect though it will be E-M5 IV.
I highly doubt TG-7 is on the priority list of OMDS.
I agree. In light of all the supply chain, labor shortage and other Covid related issues I doubt a TG-7 will happen this year. I hope I'm wrong; I'd like to see a TG-7 with exposure bracketing and in camera RAW processing like the OMD cameras.
