YouTuber claims All 4,000 B&H Pre-Orders are Going out 12/24

Obviously, we can’t be sure this is the case, but if what he’s saying is true, it sounds like Nikon is ready meet demand.

It would be nice to have a bit more transparency from these stores.
I doubt it. I'm sure those words got twisted a bit and it's more like what everyone else is saying, they will start SHIPPING orders on 12/23 or 12/24. Remember some people on YT do it for the likes and attention. I'm sure that turned a few heads.

It is with much interest that I read this thread and similar. Dec 24, 2021 is a Friday. B&H closes on Fridays at 1pm EST. The B&H calendar also shows them closed for Christmas Day and not open until the 26th.

Not really wanting to be a Scrooge about all this, but: It will be tough for B&H to get 4000 shipments ready and picked up by 1PM EST.

So, everyone, Happy Holidays and Stay Safe!
LOL I forgot about the Shabbat closing early on Friday's. Yep you could be right it's going to take several days into the following week headed towards New Years to get that done. Bummer.

They close on the Sabbath every week. No one at B&H is working from Friday at dusk to Saturday at dusk. Effectively means that means from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning.
Agreed!

LOL, this is exactly what I’m talking about. Several people within the thread have heard the same from B&H.

B&H is bigger than perhaps you might think, they have a massive fulfillment center in NJ. They are more than capable of handling the volume.

Does the warehouse shut down, or just the store? I could see it either way. Which means they wouldn't start receiving until 27 December at the earliest, worst case.

But that still ain't July or August. Still good news in the cosmic scheme of things.

Can someone call B&H and ask them if Santa and the Easter Bunny are real? I've been hearing conflicting stories about those two.
I don't believe in Santa, but the Easter Bunny is real for sure.

Well, I'm sure that if 4,000 people started getting their Z9's within the next week,. we'll certainly hear about it on DPR.... Some how I don't think that will be the case though.

The owner (Herman Schreiber) would be breaking sabbath of he had his employees work. He can get around this if he had a co-owner who was not Jewish and his co-owner had his employees work. But I do not believe he has a co-owner.

Fair enough; the difference in a few days isn't going to kill anyone.

Yes. 4,000 sounds like a lot, but it's just a little over one truckload. This assumes the Z9 is packed in a box as big as a D5 (6x8xx11 inches, or roughly 0.31 cubic feet), and a truck holds 1,1150 cubic feet.

Their fulfilment center is a 500,000+ square foot facility. For comparison, an average Amazon fulfillment center is roughly 800,000 square feet, and processes roughly 15,000 packages per day. That’s average, not peak. And not peak capacity.

Just looking at orders I placed in the last month, B&H was fulfilling between 10,000 and 22,000 orders per day. While some of these orders may have been NYC store pickups, the vast majority must have been going through their mail order facility.

They should have no issues processing 4,000 Z9’s.

No doubt we shall know soon enough. I will not be disappointed if it does not happen.

But if it does? Holy cow. 4,000 pro body shipments from a single US retailer in the middle of a covid inspired supply chain debacle.

Holy cow, Nikon.

So how did Nikon got themselves around the chip shortage and shipping delays?

Hoarding ;-) and air freight! Not sure of first though, but 2nd would be very probable. Stay Safe!

It's likely that these were built before Sony started reporting to sensor shortages, and for all we know, the Z9 sensor could have been developed and in progress before the chip shortages really got bad. It's product development was announced around March, so I suspect that the sensor design may have been finalized by then and production started, perhaps at a slower pace than anticipated but that may be how they avoided the delays at least on this first batch. In fact, I think there were some prototype Z9's at the Olympics, which was at the end of July....

Also, it depends on if Sony (and/or Nikon) stocked up on semi-conductors when the chip shortage started to become inevitable, thus trying to curb delays in production. I mean in other industries, some companies took a risk and stocked up on things (like steel) and for some it paid off.

Considering the Z9 sensor layout, it is very unlikely that it is from Sony.

In line with all sensors present in Nikon Fx flagship cameras (D3 D4 D5 D6): none of these have a Sony sensor.

I don’t think they got around it as much as they prepared for this launch. There probably will be stretches of 2022 where you can’t get the Z9, but they seem to be reasonably prepared for a big first wave.

It makes sense when you consider how much they had riding on this. And the fact that it’s the first really professional Z body. Lots of people are willing to buy it who wouldn’t consider it otherwise. There’s a lot to be gained by meeting demand.

I’m still skeptical about B&H disclosing how much orders they placed and how much they’re getting. Everyone knew it was a tight lipped secret. What has changed? Would they also disclose how much RF lenses they are getting? Or is this inside info sharing only for the Z9?

Something doesn’t add up.

I think many people are disregarding the Z platforms affect on production speed, costs and expenses. The body is certainly machined robotically and passed directly to an assembly process that is much easier, especially A Z9 thats both shutter and mirror free. Calibration is far simpler, and especially quality control. Mirrors and shutter assemblies had to be among the most expensive components. And most prone to quality issues and Calibration.

Nikon is able to offer the Z9 at low cost due to design and manufacturing savings, and labor. And still make a profit. And a better camera. This just opinion. But I worked in machine manufacturing for 40 years.

Put things in perspective.

Samsung supposedly sold 13+ million galaxy S21 in six months

Apple had to cut production of the Iphone to 80 million units

Toyota made 8 million cars the first ten months of the year.

Nikon making 40k or even 400k is just a mouse running past elephants. Especially when you consider the parts that are special are not made on the most in demand processes.

The question I'd ask is how long can they keep up the production volume ? An initial burst with stockpiled parts is easier than a long steady just in time setup.
